Man Utd's Evans 'has the persona of a manager'

Yahoo23-05-2025

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans, who is likely to make his final appearance for the Old Trafford club against Aston Villa on Sunday, possesses the attributes to become a manager in the future, according to David Healy, his former Northern Ireland international team-mate.
Evans has enjoyed a distinguished career which has seen him have two spells with the Red Devils, play for West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City, and rack up 107 caps for his country.
The 37-year-old made 131 appearances for Manchester United between 2006 and 2015 and re-joined the Premier League giants eight years later when Erik ten Hag was manager.
Evans' medal tally with United makes impressive reading - he has won the Premier League three times, the FA Cup, the League Cup twice, the Champions League and the Club World Cup with the Premier League giants.
"Jonny has the persona of a manager, nothing fazes him and he has that calmness and experience," Healy told BBC Sport NI.
"I've no doubt he would be afforded the utmost respect from the players he would coach and manage in any dressing room he walked into, if that's what he chooses to do."
Healy, who began his career with Manchester United, described Evans as "a great servant" to the Old Trafford club.
"I was hugely disappointed, and I know Jonny was too, and although he probably wouldn't say it, a wee bit hurt, the way he left United [in 2015], because he came through the ranks.
"He represented Man Utd with great pride and great dignity and with great success under Sir Alex Ferguson.
"So to get the opportunity to return when he did, people were probably sort of thinking, 'that's a strange one', but when I saw it I wasn't shocked."
Evans initially started his second spell at United in July 2023 on a short-term basis but subsequently signed a one-year contract in September.
"I still knew how highly thought of Jonny was at United previously and it didn't take long for the manager [ten Hag] to realise, even initially for a short period," reflected Healy.
"Jonny's personality, his quality, his experience, won people over when he went in."
Healy believes that Evans ranks among the best players to have turned out for Northern Ireland.
"People talk about different eras, different people, I can only go on what I've seen over the last 20 or 30 years.
"We've had exceptional centre-halves, but Jonny is certainly up there - his medal haul is through the roof, his appearance record."

Lamine Yamal vs Ousmane Dembélé: Who will win the Ballon d'Or in 2025?

The race for the 2025 Ballon d'Or is heating up, with two standout stars, Lamine Yamal of FC Barcelona and Ousmane Dembélé of Paris Saint-Germain, emerging as top contenders. As football fans eagerly await the ceremony on September 22, 2025, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the debate intensifies: who will claim the most prestigious individual award in football? This article compares their performances, stats, and chances, diving into key factors like individual brilliance, team success, and decisive moments. Lamine Yamal: The Teenage Sensation At just 17, Lamine Yamal has taken the football world by storm. The Barcelona winger has dazzled with his creativity, dribbling, and consistency, making him a strong candidate for the 2025 Ballon d'Or. Here's why Yamal is in the conversation: 2024-25 Season Highlights Yamal played a pivotal role in Barcelona's domestic treble, securing La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de España. Across 55 games, he contributed 18 goals and 25 assists, showcasing his flair and impact. Champions League Performance Despite Barcelona's exit in the semi-finals against Inter Milan, Yamal's performances were jaw-dropping. He completed 20 dribbles over two legs, scored once, and hit the woodwork three times, earning praise as potentially the best 17-year-old ever. Why He's a Contender His youth, combined with his starring role in major trophies and memorable moments against top teams like Inter, makes him a fan and jury favorite. If Barcelona had gone further in Europe, his case would be even stronger. Yamal's narrative as a rising star, often compared to legends like Lionel Messi, adds weight to his candidacy. However, the lack of a Champions League title and Barcelona's absence from the 2025 Club World Cup might hinder his chances. Ousmane Dembélé: The PSG Powerhouse Ousmane Dembélé, the 28-year-old French winger, has finally unlocked his potential at Paris Saint-Germain, positioning himself as the current favorite for the 2025 Ballon d'Or. Here's a breakdown of his case: 2024-25 Season Stats Dembélé has delivered 26 goals and 5 assists in 2025 alone, including two hat-tricks. His Champions League contributions are standout: a goal and assist against Arsenal, two assists versus Aston Villa, a crucial goal at Anfield against Liverpool, and five goals against Brest in the play-offs. Champions League Impact With PSG reaching the final and defeating Inter Milan 5-0, Dembélé's two assists and a brilliant back-heel to spark a goal showcased his leadership and clutch performance. A potential UCL win could seal his claim. Why He's a Contender Consistency, high goal output, and decisive moments in Europe's premier competition give him an edge. His Ligue 1 and potential Serie A winner's medals (from his time at Napoli earlier) bolster his trophy haul. Critics note that Ligue 1's perceived weaker competition might discount his stats, but his Champions League heroics make a compelling argument. What Decides the Ballon d'Or? The Ballon d'Or criteria focus on three pillars: individual brilliance, team achievements, and sportsmanship. Upcoming events like the Nations League and the Club World Cup (June 14-July 13, 2025) could also influence votes, especially if Yamal shines for Spain or Dembélé excels for PSG. Who Will Win? As of June 3, 2025, bookmakers favor Ousmane Dembélé, with odds around 2.63, slightly ahead of Lamine Yamal at 2.38. Dembélé's Champions League success and consistent output make him the frontrunner, especially if PSG's victory holds weight. However, Yamal's extraordinary talent at 17, combined with Barcelona's domestic dominance, keeps him in close contention. Some argue the award should reward year-long excellence, not just one final, giving Yamal a shot.

Micah Hamilton, Josh Coburn, Alex Gilbert & what happens next at Middlesbrough

THE Middlesbrough players who spent time out on loan last season had mixed fortunes. So, what happens next? We assess the likes of Josh Coburn, Micah Hamilton, Alex Gilbert and more as Boro prepare to make decisions on a number of players this summer. JOSH COBURN Millwall have made no secret of the fact they want to sign Josh Coburn on a permanent deal this summer. Advertisement The 22-year-old had an injury disrupted loan spell at The Den and was limited to just 14 Championship starts but Alex Neil was quick to decide the Boro striker was part of his loan term plans after replacing Neil Harris in the hotseat. Millwall tried and failed to make the deal permanent in January and Boro are expecting further contact from the Lions this summer. In January, Boro were open to doing a deal for the right price and their stance is unlikely to be any different this summer. Signing a striker to compete with Tommy Conway is one of Boro's transfer priorities in the coming weeks. Millwall boss Neil said of Coburn in April: 'I'd absolutely love to keep him here. Advertisement 'I don't think that's any secret with Josh. I think he really enjoys it here, and I've changed things because of him. 'I very rarely play with two players up front, it's never really been my shape as a coach, but when you've got someone like Josh, it's worth playing him as part of a two because your goal threat goes up by doing that.' RECOMMENDED READING: MICAH HAMILTON There was real excitement when Boro signed Micah Hamilton last summer, with the talented young winger having played and scored for Manchester City in the Champions League in the previous season. It hasn't yet worked out for the 21-year-old, who made just two Championship starts for Boro in the first half of the season before linking up with Stockport, where he made just five substitute appearances. Advertisement There's no getting away from the fact it was a disappointing campaign for the winger. But it's worth remembering here that Hamilton had made just three senior appearances before joining Boro a year ago. It's a huge ask to expect a young player with such a lack of senior experience to immediately adapt and shine in the Championship. It might be that Boro decide a full season long loan is the best course of action for the versatile winger. Time is certainly on Boro's hands, for Hamilton still has three years left to run on his contract at the Riverside. And there's no doubting Hamilton's quality. Advertisement Micah Richards once said of the winger: 'He's dangerous, an electric winger, can play left, can play right, can play in the middle as well. He's got pace, got skill and he can finish." Such was the potential City deemed Hamilton to have, they included a buy-back clause when they let him join Boro. Despite his lack of experience, Hamilton is 22 before the year is out so will know he needs to adapt to the senior game sooner rather than later. ALEX GILBERT Like Hamilton, Alex Gilbert was probably the victim of joining an in-form side in January. Charlton boss Nathan Jones was overjoyed to land Gilbert, telling of how he wasn't usually a fan of loan signings but couldn't turn down the opportunity to add the Middlesbrough forward to his ranks. Advertisement But Gilbert joined the Addicks at a time when they were just starting to hit the run of form that saw them threaten the automatic promotion spots and led to them going up through the play-offs. With that in mind, the 23-year-old was limited to just two starts. It wasn't how Gilbert would have envisaged his loan spell playing out after he left Boro shortly after scoring that dramatic last gasp New Year's Day winner at Hull. There was something of a clamour in the stands for Gilbert to get more football at the Riverside but the former Brentford youngster has been a fringe figure under Carrick. Advertisement This summer feels important. He's 24 before the end of the year. It could well be now or never for Gilbert at Boro. SAMMY SILVERA Boro sent Sammy Silvera out on loan last summer hoping the Aussie winger would benefit from a year of regular football and return ready to stake a claim at the Riverside. It hasn't gone to plan. His spell at Portsmouth turned into something of a disaster, with the Championship's fans chanting for the winger to be sent back to Boro. Pompey boss John Mousinho admitted at that stage he was "worried" about the impact it would have on the 24-year-old's confidence, but Boro had already decided they were recalling him from Fratton Park in January. Advertisement Silvera was sent to Blackpool in the second half of the campaign, with Boro hopeful the experienced Steve Bruce would put an arm around the former Central Coast Mariners wideman and get the best out of him, but he only started three League One games. 'It's been disappointing for Sammy," said Bruce at the end of the season. "After a really bright start, he's not been able to have a run in the team. 'Basically, it's not just injury, it's been the way the team has played. He's a very good player, and we wish him well. We will have a conversation to see what he's up to.' Silvera will be allowed to leave this summer if a deal can be agreed. LUKAS ENGEL Engel left Boro for FC Cincinnati in February on an initial loan deal until the end of the calendar year, with the MLS club then having the option to make the move permanent. Advertisement That feels likely, with Engel having featured prominently for Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference. Patrick Noonan's side are going well, sitting second, just four points off the top. Engel was a bit-part player for Boro in the first half of the season and was pushed further down the pecking order after Ryan Giles' January arrival. That move didn't work out and Giles won't be signing on a permanent deal this summer, but Neto Borges improved as the campaign went on and Alex Bangura will be returning from his long-term injury. ZACH HEMMING Zach Hemming is likely to make his St Mirren loan move permanent this summer. Advertisement The goalkeeper has been a big hit with the Buddies in two separate spells. St Mirren were desperate to re-sign him last summer but Boro wanted the 25-year-old to test himself in League One with Leyton Orient. That spell didn't go to plan and he returned to St Mirren in January, quickly establishing himself back in the side. Boss Stephen Robinson has prioritised the permanent signing of Hemming this summer, with talks with Boro having already taken place. Hemming said at the end of the season: 'I think there's been talks. Obviously it's one of those things where I've still got another year left on my contract at Middlesbrough so it's probably down to them more than anyone. Advertisement 'I've said my side of the story and I think my family have obviously spoken, too. They've said their point of view and see what happens. But I think it's just down to Middlesbrough and then the two clubs to agree a deal." SONNY FINCH Michael Carrick is a big fan of Sonny Finch and Boro sent the youngster to MK Dons last summer hoping he'd benefit from a year of regular senior football. It didn't work out as hoped. Finch joined the League Two club in what was initially expected to be a season long loan, but the Dons changed managers soon after, with Scott Lindsey replacing Mike Williamson. Advertisement Finch found game-time limited under Lindsey and made just eight appearances and two starts - both of which came in the EFL Cup. He returned to Teesside in January but having played for Boro in the Carabao Cup early in the campaign was unable to go back out on loan. Finch is 20 in August and if he goes out on loan again this summer Boro will be desperate to make sure they get the right club.

Recap: LSU wins Game 7, will face West Virginia in Baton Rouge Super Regional

LSU baseball entered Monday night's matchup against the Little Rock Trojans with no margin for error. After losing to the Trojans 10-4 on Sunday, Monday's contest was a winner-take-all Game 7. The winner would advance to face West Virginia in the Super Regionals. LSU made a big comeback to win this game 10-6. LSU was once again the visiting team, and the Tigers once again took an early lead as Ethan Frey hit a solo shot in the top of the first to give LSU a 1-0 lead. Advertisement Entering the game tonight, LSU had Zac Cowan and Casan Evans fresh to pitch, so I felt good about LSU's odds. Cowan got the start, and he worked through the first inning unscathed. Unfortunately, the wheels fell off for LSU in the bottom of the second inning. The Trojans scored five runs against Cowan as they kept stringing together hits to give Little Rock a 5-1 lead. Casan Evans was called out of the bullpen to try to save the day for LSU. He got the Tigers out of the inning, but the Trojans had done a ton of damage. At this point, anxiety had set in for the LSU faithful. They saw this same script play out last night, and it did not end well for LSU. Advertisement I understand that things looked bleak, but there was still a lot of baseball left. This team still had enough pop in their sticks to make a comeback. That comeback began in the top of the fourth inning. LSU loaded the bases, and Frey hit a three-RBI double to cut the lead to 5-4. Evans was able to keep the Trojans off the scoreboard and keep the Tigers in the game. In the top of the sixth inning, Indiana State transfer Luis Hernandez came through with a solo homer to tie the game 5-5! In the top of the seventh inning, Frey led off the inning with a double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. An RBI groundout by Stephen Milam would score Frey and give LSU their first lead since the first inning! With LSU clinging to a one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, Evans remained on the mound. He found himself in a jam as three walks loaded the bases with two outs. Anthony Eyanson began to warm up in the bullpen. There is no tomorrow if the Tigers lose this game, so Jay Johnson was preparing to bring in one of his two aces to try to win. Evans then struck out the next hitter he faced to strand all three runners and get LSU out of the inning with a 6-5 lead. One thing that would make LSU fans feel better at this moment would be some insurance runs. Hernandez would be the leadoff hitter in the top of the eighth inning, and he had homered in his last at-bat to tie the game 5-5. On the first pitch he saw in the top of the eighth inning, he hit ANOTHER homer to extend the LSU lead to 7-5. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Evans passed the century mark as he had thrown over 100 pitches. Back-to-back hits put the tying run on first base with no outs, and Eyanson began ramping up his activity in the bullpen again. The next Trojan hitter laid down a bunt to try to put the tying run at second base, but Evans fielded the ball and got the out at third to spoil the bunt. Advertisement Evans was then pulled from the game as Eyanson entered with one out and runners on first and second. The first hitter Eyanson faced hit an RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to 7-6. The next hitter was retired via the strikeout for out number two. Tanner Reaves then made a great play at third, and Jared Jones made a stretch to get out number three. We would head to the ninth inning with the Tigers leading 7-6. Jake Brown walked to start the top of the ninth inning to bring up Jones. It is no secret that Jared Jones had been in hibernation during this regional. Entering this at-bat, Jones was 1-for-14 (.071) in three games in the Baton Rouge Regional. Finally, the "Bear" got the proverbial monkey off of his back as he hit a two-run bomb to extend the LSU lead to 9-6. An RBI single from Hernandez would score Chris Stanfield and make it 10-6, Tigers. Eyanson went out to pitch the ninth inning and close out the win for the Tigers. He retired the Trojans 1-2-3, and LSU advances to face West Virginia in a Super Regional at Alex Box Stadium. It was not easy, but Ethan Frey, Casan Evans, and Luis Hernandez came through when LSU needed them the most. The Tigers will welcome the Mountaineers into Alex Box Stadium.
