Boston Marathon results and times as John Korir storms to victory after shock fall

Independent21-04-2025

Kenya's John Korir recovered from an early fall to win the Boston Marathon, emulating his brother Wesley to triumph at the iconic major and back up his victory at the Chicago Marathon last year.
Korir ran without his name and number on the front of his vest after losing his bib when he fell coming out of the starting gates. A video shot by a spectator showed that Korir landed hard on his stomach after being clipped, but he avoided being trampled on and quickly got to his feet to resume running.

And the 28-year-old hit his stride to make a burst around the 30-km mark, with the Chicago champion building a sizable lead over the chasing pack. Alphonce Felix Simbu and Cyprian Kotut completed the podium, edging ahead of the best male American finisher, Conner Mantz, who was fourth.
Korir won in an unofficial time of 02:04:45, bringing victory back to the family after his elder brother Wesley won world's oldest annual marathon in 2012.
Course record holder Marcel Hug won his eighth men's wheelchair title and third in a row in Boston, with the 39-year-old Swiss finishing over four minutes ahead of 2022 champion Daniel Romanchuk.
There was an American winner in the women's wheelchair race as Susannah Scaroni reclaimed her title after being forced to withdraw from last year's event. Britain's Eden Rainbow Cooper, who won last year, finished fourth.

Scottie Scheffler can't hold back as US Open star damages course at Oakmont

Scottie Scheffler has been in sensational form in recent weeks, though he struggled to find his rhythm in the opening round of the US Open, with the world No. 1 letting his frustrations get the better of him Scottie Scheffler was unable to hold back his irritation at the US Open on Thursday. In the run-up to the third major of the year, players had been cautioned about the harsh conditions at Oakmont Country Club. Tiger Woods has even given out specific advice on how to triumph over the weekend, with Colin Montgomerie, ex-European Ryder Cup captain, chiding top players who lamented the course's tough setup, urging them to "man up" and take on the challenge. ‌ Scheffler, the current world No. 1, found himself amongst those competing to survive during the first round, and despite a remarkable recent form that saw him clinch three out of his last four starts, he seemed to have met his match against the stern test in Pennsylvania. ‌ During the opening round, on the 14th hole, Scheffler was placed 38th at two-over as he strived to find his stride on what was proving to be a difficult day. Following a strong tee shot, his subsequent attempt landed on the green but sadly not in the spot he had hoped for. Although it initially seemed the ball might be close enough for a putt, it rolled away, resulting in a more challenging stroke. Realising luck wasn't on his side, Scheffler showed his exasperation by aggressively embedding his club into the turf, leaving behind a divot, reports the Mirror US. Scheffler's frustration was palpable as he tapped the hole a few more times and trudged over to the green. After the first round, Scheffler was three-over-par, in company with Tyrrell Hatton and Bryson DeChambeau, among others. The American's struggles at Oakmont bring to mind Woods' cautionary words about the course. Although not competing this year due to an Achilles injury, the 49-year-old offered insight into what players could expect in a video on Sun Day Red before the tournament. ‌ "There is no faking about Oakmont," admitted Woods. "The golf course is big, yes, but it's just - there is no way around it. You just have to hit the golf ball well. "It favors longer hitters, just because of the degrees, the complexes. It just helps so much to be coming with shorter iron, to be able to sock the ball. It's about missing the ball on correct spots... because if you don't, it's horrible!" Despite complaints from some top players about Oakmont's tough conditions, Montgomerie insists it's time for them to prove their worth. The forthright 61-year-old shared his views with reporters at Trump International Golf Links in Scotland. "[Look at] technology now from 30 years ago. The golf ball that we were playing with 30 years ago moved around all over the place. It was soft, it went 20 yards shorter," he exclaimed. "Now, the golf club development, the drivers, the irons, the putters, look at the putters now, the development in the putters. So, get on with it. For Christ's sake, you've got technology there that is beyond what you would ever, ever dream of. "Use it and play golf. I mean, at this level, you shouldn't be missing any fairways, unless it's blowing a gale. The research and development that's been poured into the game, man up. Yeah, get on with it."

High priority Dor Turgeman is Rangers long term transfer desire as 49ers front and centre of signing necessity

We told you how the Israeli striker is an Ibrox target - months after Leeds were hot on his heels Dor Turgeman is a wanted man by Rangers as Russell Martin looks to strengthen ahead of a new era at Ibrox. Record Sport first revealed the Maccabi Tel Aviv man is a target for the Light Blues. ‌ And his name could be an indication of how Rangers' new owners 49ers Enterprises aim to share information between the Ibrox club and Leeds United. ‌ That's because the 21-year-old was heavily linked with the Yorkshire club - before we revealed the bombshell American takeover exclusive. We told you in February of the bid for ownership by a US-based consortium. However, talks had been going on long before that for such a complex deal. And it was in December last year that Leeds United were first linked with the Israeli. Daniel Farke's men were keen to bolster their squad as they chased their eventually successful bid for promotion to the Premier League. A deal wasn't concluded but back in March of this year it emerged Rangers had watched Turgeman in action for Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League and games for Israel against Estonia and Norway in March. Coincidence? Surely not. News of the Rangers takeover by Leeds United 's owners had exploded by then and it's more likely they had started sharing information. ‌ The American group have their own player databases and that is likely to be exploited, with the Elland Road side likely aiming for a higher profile players now they have reached the Premier League promised land. But Turgeman, who stands at 6ft 1in tall and can play as a central striker or on the left wing, is under contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv until the summer of 2026, would fit the bill for Rangers He started his youth career at Ashdod before moving to Bloomfield Stadium in 2018. He spent a season on loan at Beitar Tel Aviv Bat Yam between 2021 and 2022 before breaking into the first-team picture at Maccabi. His manager Zarko Lazetic described him as a 'beast on the football pitch' and around the time of Leeds United's interest, didn't want to sell at any price, saying only a 'fairytale offer' would tempt him to part company. Rangers have been told that £4million won't be enough for the Israelis to sell and they will have to raise any offer.
