George Russell hopes Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri ‘keep throwing away points' in F1 title race
George Russell said he hopes Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will continue to throw away points to propel him into this season's world championship fight.
Russell won from pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix to claim his first triumph of the year and just the fourth of his career, with the result standing after a late Red Bull protest.
The British driver has been one of the grid's standout performers this season, and his win in Montreal takes him to 62 points behind championship leader Piastri.
Russell is 40 points behind Norris after he failed to score following a collision with McLaren team-mate Piastri. Runner-up Max Verstappen is 43 points off the championship pace.
After the race, Verstappen's Red Bull team protested Russell's 'erratic and unsportsmanlike' driving behind the safety car, deployed following Piastri's late collision with Norris, with both drivers summoned to see the stewards.
But the case was dismissed five hours after the race ended as Russell held on to his victory.
'I don't know how both Max and I are so close to those two (Norris and Piastri) in the championship because McLaren clearly have the dominant car,' said Russell.
'I cannot imagine they will keep throwing away points in the manner that they are doing, but of course, we hope that continues to be the case.
'I don't foresee us getting in the championship fight through pure pace as Lando did last year. We will only be there if things like today continue to happen.'
As it stands, Russell is out of contract at the end of the season with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff having previously stated he has explored Verstappen's availability.
But when asked if his performance here will help him get his next deal with Mercedes over the line, Russell, 27, continued: 'It doesn't hurt at all.
'I am not concerned about next year. I know I am going to be on the grid. I feel I am driving better than ever. I have got more in the tank and I am ready to fight for a world championship.
'I am not talking with anybody else, and any teams that have shown interest I have been quite open to them to say to them that my intention is to stay with Mercedes.
'That has always been clear. I am loyal to Mercedes. They gave me this chance to get into Formula One. And there hasn't been any hard feelings with any of the talks going round, especially around Max because why wouldn't teams be interested in Max?
'If every driver did not have a contract for next year, Max would be the number one of every single team and that is understandable.
'But here are two seats for every race team and I knew if I would continue to perform as I am doing I would not be under threat. I am in a good place and there is in no rush to do contract negotiations.'

So much for Justin Rose being a shoo-in for golf's 'most gracious loser of the year' award. At the very least, Bob MacIntyre has provided some enriching competition for his Ryder Cup partner with his own classy response to agonising defeat at the US Open on Sunday night. In an era in which the entitlement of the multi-millionaire pros continues to reach shameless and unprecedented heights, the game surely owes the British duo a debt for their well-timed sportsmanship. While Rose hugged and congratulated Rory McIlroy after watching the world No 2 hole the putt to beat him in the Masters play-off, MacIntyre provided his own lesson in succumbing with honour. Unlike certain runners-up of recent US Open vintage who screeched out of the car park moments after their fate was confirmed, MacIntyre, the 28-year-old from Oban, hung around the Oakmont clubhouse to shake the hand of JJ Spaun. The American appreciated the gesture, calling MacIntyre 'a great guy and a great player', but his admiration only multiplied when shown the clip of his reaction when Spaun pulled off his grandstand moment. MacIntyre had finished more than half an hour before, coming back from an overnight seven-shot deficit to take the clubhouse lead on one-over. As a mark of his quality in a storm-delayed final round blighted by a course covered in puddles, MacIntyre was the only player who started the day in the top 20 who broke 70, with a 68. Spaun was also on one-over as he stepped on to the penultimate teebox. At this stage, many wondered why MacIntyre had not headed directly to the range to stay loose for a play-off. But with the light fading, he had been told by officials that if it did go to two extra holes, they would be held over to Monday. He first saw Tyrrell Hatton bogey the 17th and 18th to lose his chance – the Englishman eventually finished with a share of fourth before labelling the course set-up as 'unfair' – and then looked on as Spaun birdied the 17th after a brilliant drive on to the green. One ahead, Spaun was 65 feet away from the hole on the 18th in two and in three-putt territory. There was still hope for MacIntyre. But then, Spaun holed out for an outrageous birdie and a two-shot victory and as his putter disappeared into the air and the tears poured down his face, the coverage switched to the vanquished. Except MacIntyre was not sitting there with his head in his hands, he was applauding, with a huge smile and exclaiming 'Wow!' Later, MacIntyre explained his response. 'J J won the golf tournament,' he said. 'He's dreamed of it. Everyone's dreamed of that moment. For him to pour in the winning putt, I mean, nothing I can do. Fair play. Rose felt the same after Augusta. But in a week in which we witnessed McIlroy throwing clubs and smashing tee-boxes and of first blanking the media before consenting to talk and declaring ' I feel like I've earned the right to do whatever I want to do, yeah', the injection of humility was much welcome. Up to a career-high 12th in the world, MacIntyre must be one of the favourites for next month's Open at Royal Portrush, the Ulster links where he finished sixth on his major debut six years ago. 'There's no reason why I can't win a major championship,' he said. 'I thought I had this one, but, yeah, it's about majors. That's my goal now.'

Lorry leaves behind scene of destruction after swerving over M11 central reservation and flipping over sparking huge tailbacks near Stansted Airport
A lorry has overturned on a major motorway bringing traffic to a standstill as motorists complain of four-hour delays near Stansted Airport. The M11 in Essex is closed in both directions between Stansted Airport and Harlow after a heavy goods vehicle crossed the central reservation before overturning and coming to rest on its side. Emergency services rushed to the scene after the lorry swerved from the northbound carriageway at around 3pm today, with the air ambulance reportedly present. Pictures from the scene show the lorry on its side with debris scattered across the motoway, while another two vehicles have been left damaged following the collision. Essex police will carry out investigations and closures are expected to remain in place throughout the evening and into the night, the National Highways said. The force has warned that the closures will affect people travelling to Stansted Airport in the coming hours. Motorists have taken to social media vent their frustration after waiting in traffic for more than fours and following a series of crashes on the same stretch of the M11. One user on X said: @NationalHways how can people be left in their cars for over four hours with no sign of anything happening. 'Understandable that an accident has happened but you can turn cars around near the junctions. People have children and dogs. No shade and no water left.' Another added: 'When, in the name of God, will something be done about this deadly stretch of the #M11? Another serious crash, air ambulance, huge delays. 'Constant cost of disruption must be in the millions—average speed cameras would've paid for themselves.' National Highways said: 'The M11 in Essex is closed in both directions between J8 near Stansted Airport and J7A near Harlow North due to a serious collision involving an overturned heavy goods vehicle which has crossed from the northbound carriageway onto the southbound carriageway and has subsequently overturned and come to rest on its side. 'Essex police will be carrying out collision investigations throughout the evening. 'The closures are expected to remain in place for several hours throughout the evening and into the night. 'National Highways Traffic Officers and service providers are in attendance and are assisting with traffic management.' Traffic caught within the closure is currently being released via rearward relief and diversion have been put in place. Wrexham sign striker Hardie from Plymouth
Wrexham have signed Plymouth Argyle's Scottish striker Ryan Hardie for an undisclosed 28-year-old, who began his career with Rangers, scored 10 goals in the Championship last season as Argyle were relegated to League also scored the winner from the penalty spot against Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round in February, one of 12 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions in 2024-25."I'm delighted to get the move done, I'm really happy to get it done so early and I cannot wait to get going," Hardie told Wrexham's official website."The last couple of seasons, it's been good getting experience in the EFL Championship and it's experience I can lean on now."He has signed a contract until the end of the 2027-28 season and is Wrexham's first signing of the summer as they prepare for a return to English football's second tier for the first time in 43 years.
