After lull, monsoon advances into central and east India
After remaining sluggish for 17 days since May 29, the southwest monsoon on Monday progressed into some parts of central and eastern India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, adding that the rainfall over east and south India will pick up this week.
The monsoon is now passing through Veraval, Bhavnagar, Vadodara, Khargone, Amravati, Durg Bargarh, Chandbali, Sandhead Island and Balurghat, the weather bureau said.
With the latest advance into more areas of Maharashtra, Gujarat, southwest Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, all of the monsoon's early advance observed early in the season has returned to its normal schedule.
This year, the monsoon onset over Kerala was realised on May 24 – eight days ahead of its normal date. The monsoon thereafter continued to make early advances into Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and northeast India.
With the monsoon once again turning into its active phase, the Met department has warned of intense rainfall over Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha till June 20.
With the sea conditions remaining rough and squally winds likely to prevail, the IMD has warned fishermen from venturing into both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal till June 20.
Officials at IMD, Pune, noted that the monsoon advance will pick up pace during this week.
'Conditions are favourable for the further advancement of the monsoon into Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, remaining parts of Vidarbha, some more parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh during the next two days,' the IMD said on Monday.
Since there would be multiple favourable weather conditions available, there are chances that the monsoon could reach Delhi and cover the entire country by the end of this month, said a senior official from IMD, Pune.
Over north India, respite from heat is forecast this week as thunderstorms, light to moderate intensity rainfall will affect east Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. A drop in maximum temperatures by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius is likely over central and northwest India this week.
As of June 16, the all-India rainfall for June is 31 per cent deficient.

A fresh spell of pre-monsoon rains on Sunday and Monday brought much-needed relief from the extreme heat conditions in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, especially in the western region, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The change in weather was triggered by an interaction between active western disturbances in the mid and upper troposphere and easterly winds at lower levels. In its daily bulletin at 6 pm on Monday, the IMD reported that in the last 24 hours, rainfall activity remained normal over the state, with many places in western Uttar Pradesh and some locations in eastern Uttar Pradesh witnessing light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. The highest rainfall was recorded in Bareilly district in western UP, where the IMD registered a very heavy downpour of 149.4 mm. Saharanpur's Nakur area received 120 mm of rain, while Bijnor recorded 86 mm. In eastern UP, the highest rainfall was 83 mm in Mankapur (Gonda) and 66.4 mm in Shardanagar (Lakhimpur Kheri). Thunderstorms with gusty winds up to 50 km/h may occur in the evening or night for June 21. The sky will remain partly cloudy on June 22 with light to moderate rain or thunderstorms. Lightning and gusty winds are likely, and wind speeds may temporarily rise to 50 km/h during thunderstorms. The temperature throughout the week is expected to range between 33 degrees Celsius and 36 degrees Celsius during the daytime, while nighttime temperatures will stay between 25 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius.
