Travel influencer felt 'hunted like prey' when her 'stalker' arrived in Bali threatening to kidnap her

Daily Mail12-05-2025

An American travel influencer felt 'hunted like prey' after her 'stalker' arrived in Bali, Indonesia, after threatening to kidnap her, a court heard.
Alexandra Saper described Rob Keating, from Britain, as 'someone who is deeply obsessed' and 'mentally ill' after he sent her a message following his arrival on the island in which he referred to himself as a 'serial killer'.
She spoke of her ordeal in a video she posted from Laos, the country she escaped to, which was shown to a jury.
Suspect: Rob Keating from Hampshire in England has pleaded not guilty to two counts of stalking involving serious alarm or distress
In the video, she said: 'I want you to imagine what it feels like to be hunted like prey.'
She revealed she was 'exhausted' after 'being run out of [her] home in Indonesia '.
Saper said: 'I'm exhausted, and I feel defeated today - and I have over half a million people who have watched my story and advocated for me. Most women don't have that level of support and reach and network.
'What do our governments expect us to do to protect ourselves to not get killed or raped or attacked or kidnapped?
'I want my life back, I want to go home, I want to feel safe.'
Keating is accused of sending 'incessant' messages to the 33-year-old former lawyer, who now earns a living from her Instagram page 'The Wayfaress', which has more than 100,000 followers.
The court has heard these included him describing his sexual fantasies in graphic detail to her and expressing a wish to 'go Fifty Shades Of Grey on' her.
Following his messaging, the 39-year-old travelled to Bali - where she lived - on a one-way ticket with rope in his luggage, the court has been told.
Keating is a traffic worker who was living in his sister's garage in Hampshire, England, at the time of the alleged offences.
He has pleaded not guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court in England to two counts of stalking involving serious alarm or distress.
The court heard he sent hundreds of emails and around 30 video messages to the influencer between August 2022 and January 2023.
He travelled to the Indonesian island at the end of January 2023 and sent messages after his arrival, the jury was told.
'I would really like to see you - bring security if you must', he said, and, 'I didn't come here expecting to jump into bed with you'.
Speaking as if he was Saper, Keating asked: 'How can this guy not be a serial killer?
'How can this go right if there's so much wrong inside of him?'
In response to a message from someone on social media regarding his alleged stalking, he said: 'Either way, it's been a win-win - she'll have a book out and I've done this reinvention thing.'
Police found black rope, which was shown to the jury, in his suitcase when he was arrested on his return to the UK in March 2023.
The court heard that Keating posted a screenshot of a plane ticket from Heathrow Airport in London to Bali on his social media with the caption 'round two' in October 2024.
Saper informed police he had done this, and he was subsequently arrested. The trial continues.

Mystery as influencer is found dead in the back of a car in university parking lot two days after heading to a promotional event

Police in India have launched a murder probe after a controversial influencer was found dead in the back of a car two days after heading to a promotional event. Kanchan Kumari, famous for stirring controversy with her videos posted to her nearly 400,000 followers, was tragically found dead on Wednesday night in a car park at Adesh Medical University in Bathinda, Punjab province, India. Locals called the police after reporting a foul smell coming from the car. Police found and identified the body after searching the car, which was registered to an address in Ludhiana, a city around 80 miles away. The cops' investigation revealed she had left her home on Monday, telling her family she was travelling to Bathinda to attend a promotional event. But her family reportedly told cops they hadn't heard from her since. Local media reported that CCTV footage showed a man driving the car Kumari's body was found. It was reported that the video shows the man parking the car before walking away. Officials believe she may have been killed somewhere else, before being moved to the university's car park. Narendra Singh, Superintendent of Police for Ludhiana, said: 'Last night, a woman's body was found in the parking lot of Adesh Hospital in Bathinda. '[She] was a well-known social media influencer, known for posting videos using obscene language. We are investigating the matter from all aspects.' Singh added: 'Due to the advanced stage of decomposition, it is currently not possible to determine the presence of any injury marks. 'The body has been sent to Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Civil Hospital for post-mortem.' He also said that the number plates attached to her car appeared to be fake. It comes after another popular social media influencer's cause of death was revealed following her passing just two days before her 25th birthday. Misha Agrawal the founder of Mish Cosmetics passed away on April 24. A notification of her death on her Instagram page revealed the heartache of her loss. Agrawal's sister released a statement on Instagram Tuesday, confirming she died by suicide after feeling 'worthless' over not reaching 1million followers. She wrote: 'My little baby sister had built her world around Instagram and her followers, with a single goal of reaching 1 million followers and gaining loving fans. 'When her followers started decreasing, she became distraught and felt worthless. Since April, she had been deeply depressed, often hugging me and crying, saying…'what will I do If my followers decrease? My career will be over.' 'I tried to console her, explaining that this isn't her entire world, It's just a side job, and if it doesn't work out, it's not the end. I reminded her of her talents.' 'I advised her to view Instagram as mere entertainment and not let it consume her. I urged her to focus on her happiness and let go of anxiety and depression. 'Unfortunately, my little sister didn't listen and became so consumed by Instagram and followers that she left our world forever. Tragically, she became so overwhelmed that she took her own life, leaving our family devastated.'

Laos hostel linked to methanol deaths set to reopen

A backpackers' hostel linked to the deaths of six tourists is set to reopen under a new Clarke and her friend Simone White, who later died, fell ill after drinking free vodka shots in the town of Vang Vieng last suspected their drinks at the Nana Backpacker Hostel were laced with methanol - a deadly substance linked to bootleg Newsbeat has found evidence the hostel is due to reopen at the same address in August. Bethany believes the same management is still in charge. Bethany says she and Simone, from London, became unwell a day after being offered drinks at the Nana initially mistook symptoms for food poisoning but were eventually taken to recovered but Simone, 28, died several days later, as did five other tourists from Australia, Denmark and the US. 'Unbelievable' The owners of the Nana hostel denied serving illicit alcohol but it has remained closed since the a listing for Vang Vieng Central Backpacker Hostel - taking bookings from 23 August this year - has appeared on travel websites Tripadvisor and Agoda.A link that previously took users to the Nana hostel's page redirects them to the amended showing the Nana Backpacker Hostel name painted on a sign and printed on menus remain on the page, as well as guest reviews naming the former confirmed to Newsbeat the hostel was reopening with a new concerned that the new business is being run by the same people it was before."I'm shocked. If it's the same management or ownership involved, I wouldn't trust them."It's just unbelievable because we know that was where we were poisoned."A Tripadvisor spokesperson said old photos and reviews could be deleted if it was informed of a change in ownership, although it's not a requirement. There is further evidence to suggest the Vang Vieng hostel and the Nana hostel are linked. Building work is currently being carried out at the address, according to travellers staying in the Frankie, who shared photos of the site with Newsbeat, says there was "building equipment everywhere" when she walked past on Tuesday."They're clearly refurbishing it," she says. In one photo, showing a sign reading Vang Vieng Central Backpacker Hostel, a phone number is same number appears in messages, seen by Newsbeat, sent between Bethany and staff at the Nana hostel. When a reporter called the number, the person who answered hung calls and messages, including those from BBC colleagues based in the region, were blocked. Frankie, 23, says it's "horrendous" to think the business could "carry on like normal". "[Vang Vieng] is kind of empty in terms of backpackers. People are drinking, but it feels a bit eerie and quiet."Frankie says people she's met on her travels are well aware of the methanol poisonings last year. "A lot of the backpackers we've met have mentioned the name of Nana hostel. There's definitely an awareness about it,' she adds the name change makes her "very uneasy" and she'll tell her friends about it when they travel to the country. Bethany, who previously called for more education on the dangers of drinking abroad, says she wants to warn others."I was not completely convinced we would end up getting justice for Simone and the other victims, so I thought the best thing I can do is to try and educate the younger generation."And while she waits to find out whether anyone will face action over Simone's death, what little hope she had for answers is starting to fade. In November, authorities in Laos promised an investigation into the deaths of Simone and Australians Holly Bowles and Bianca Jones, both 19, Anne-Sofie Orkild Coyman, 20, Freja Vennervald Sorensen, 21, both from Denmark, and US national James Louis Hutson, workers, including the manager of the Nana hostel, were detained for questioning by police. The manager denied any responsibility, saying hundreds of guests had been given shots without becoming shared a recent email sent by the UK Foreign Office stating that authorities in Laos had proposed charges against 13 people over food safety has seen an email from the Australian government with the same update and has approached its foreign office for comment. A Foreign Office spokesperson declined to comment on the email but confirmed the UK government was in contact with authorities in Laos and supporting the family of a British woman who died in the country. Influencer & extreme sport enthusiast, 28, died after ‘tumbling through the air' as she fell 60ft off Brit mountain

AN influencer and extreme sports enthusiast died after "tumbling through the air" in a 60ft plunge off a British mountain Maria Eftimova, 28, went hiking up the 3,000ft peak before slipping on rocky ground and tumbling down the mountain to her death. 4 4 Maria suffered fatal head injuries and, despite the best efforts of medical staff, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The influencer, with more than 10,000 followers, was tackling the notorious Tryfan mountain in Snowdonia, North Wales, when she fell to her death. An inquest into her death heard she was climbing the mountain's notorious north ridge - a popular but dangerous scrambling route. Maria was an experienced mountaineer and had completed an ice-climbing course in Norway shortly before the horror unfolded. The inquest has heard how she posed for a "Mexican wave" with friends before she fell to her death. Fellow climber Harry Jones said the group were going up the face one-by-one when he witnessed Maria's tragic fall. He added: "I could see on one particular ledge Maria stopped in order to get a handhold to pull herself up, I was six ft below her, to the left. "She swung her right leg up to pull herself up. I asked 'Got it well?' and she said 'I think so." He said moments later he witnessed Maria "flying over me" and down the mountainside. The 60ft plummet left Maria with horrific injuries, including a fractured skull.. Coroner Kate Robertson returned a conclusion of accidental death and passed on her condolences to Maria's family and friends. Maria, of St Helens, originally from Sofia, Bulgaria, showcased her outdoor lifestyle online. Terrifying moment Scotland's top ranked skier plunges down mountain & suffers horror injuries Following her tragic death a fundraiser was set up by friends to help cover repatriation costs. Maria's tragic death on February 22nd came less than a week after Dr Charlotte Crook, 30, also died while climbing in the same region. An inquest heard Dr Crook plunged 30ft to her death while walking on Glyder Fach with a fellow medic. Both women were attended to by Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation. 4 Speaking of Maria's accident, the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team said: "A group was ascending the north-ridge when one of them fell 20 metres into steep terrain. "Passers-by with climbing equipment abseiled down and made her safe, and a team member already nearby made his way down and started CPR. "Colleagues from Welsh Ambulance Service stood by at base while the Coastguard helicopter dropped team members onto the mountain. "Unfortunately, the casualty had not survived her injuries, and she was brought down to Oggie base. "The thoughts of all involved are with the casualties families and friends, thank you to all the members of the public who tried to help." Neil Oakes, who was on a slightly different route up the mountain at the time Maria fell, told of his horror at witnessing the tragedy unfold. He said: "I turned and saw Ms Eftimova tumbling through the air below me. She was already in freefall. "I knew there was going to be an impact on the rocky outcrop below so I turned away for a split second. I was shouting 'No, no, no, no.' "When I turned back she was on the ledge below. I knew that it was serious. "I said 'She's gone. She's fallen.' I was in shock."
