Boston police warn delivery drivers of increase in food drop-off robberies

Yahoo5 days ago

Boston police are warning local delivery drivers about a recent increase in robberies targeting couriers during food drop-offs.
The incidents have been reported in the city's Mattapan and Hyde Park neighborhoods, police said in a press release. In most cases, robbers threatened the delivery drivers — sometimes with weapons — as they tried to drop off the food order. The robbers then stole the food.
Boston police are concerned for the safety of drivers working for app-based and independent food delivery services. It recommends that they follow these safety tips:
Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when delivering food to an unfamiliar or low-visibility area.
If something seems suspicious about the delivery location, consider contacting the customer through the app or calling the delivery company for verification.
Let a friend or family member know your route or use apps that allow real-time location sharing.
Avoid carrying cash while working and report any customers who insist on paying in cash outside the app's payment system.
If a situation doesn't feel right, don't approach. Call the customer from a safe distance or notify the delivery service and leave the area.
The Boston Police Department is actively investigating the robberies. Anyone with information about them is strongly urged to contact detectives at (617) 343-5607.
You can also provide an anonymous tip by calling 1-800-494-TIPS, texting the word 'TIP' to CRIME (27463) or on Boston police's website.

Justin Slaten Gives Good News On His Injury

Justin Slaten Gives Good News On His Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It has been a bad few weeks for the Boston Red Sox and most of the top players. Between inconsistencies and injuries, the team has struggled to catch a break as they are now several games under .500%. There is some good news for Boston involving their pitching rotation and top reliever Justin Slaten. Slaten told MassLive's Chris Contillo that his shoulder injury is mild and more caused by fatigue and overuse. Slaten also said that he hopes to be off IL after the minimum 15 days have finished. Advertisement The last Slaten played, he allowed two runs and one hit in 16 pitches in last Wednesday's 6-5 loss in extra innings to the Milwaukee Brewers. Slaten is playing in his second season for Boston. He has appeared in 24 games and 23.1 innings, where he allowed 14 hits, 12 runs (one of them being a home run) and seven walks while delivering 16 strikeouts. He has a season ERA of 3.47. © Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images Slaten has been one of the more efficient relief pitchers for the Red Sox this season despite having some tough performances in the last few games played. While having some good pitching moments, he has possessed a 1-4 record but has three quality saves. That is the second-most on the roster following star relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman. Advertisement Boston will need as much help as they can get in every portion of the pitching rotation. Luckily for the Red Sox, Slaten's shoulder injury isn't concerning as he could return to the lineup sooner than later. Mass. man sentenced after stealing alcohol, threatening storeowner with knife, DA says

A man from Greenfield was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to stealing alcohol from two Northampton package stores and threatening a store owner with a knife, according to Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan's office. Keith Shaw, 49, pleaded guilty to charges of armed robbery and shoplifting in connection with incidents in June 2024 when he walked off with $165 worth of alcohol from one package store and $79 worth of alcohol at another, prosecutors said. Shaw was sentenced to three years in state prison on the armed robbery charge and a concurrent 1-year sentence in the Hampshire House of Correction on the shoplifting charge. 'The second incident escalated quickly from a shoplifting offense to an armed robbery when Mr. Shaw threatened the store owner with a knife,' Northwestern Assistant District Attorney Andrew Covington said.
