London is three-fourths finished with cleanup efforts after deadly tornado: Mayor
Video note: Despite this article's time stamp, the above video is the latest forecast from The Weather Authority. LONDON, Ky. (FOX 56) — It's been 25 days since London was hit with the unimaginable. In the late evening hours of May 16, a deadly and violent EF4 tornado touched down in the place that thousands call home. London is three-fourths finished with cleanup efforts after deadly tornado: Mayor 1 dead, 2 injured after crash in Adair County Off-duty Kentucky police officer charged with DUI in Hardin County 'I'd imagine it's going to take us years,' said City of London Mayor Randall Weddle. 'And I don't know that the scars will ever be healed.' More than 800 homes were impacted, and 19 people lost their lives. 'It's going to take some time. We lost some amazing people. Every individual we lost in this community hurts,' Weddle added. 'It's been a burden on this community that lost one so.' In those 25 days, it's been nonstop work, rebuilding the community one day at a time. 'We're over ¾ with cleanup, so if you go back out into the areas, we've done a tremendous amount of work out there, and it goes to the volunteers,' said Weddle. 'We've had over 2,000 volunteers and over 11,000 hours of manpower that's been out there the last several weeks.' The city has also established temporary storm shelters that will be activated in the event of inclement weather at the South Laurel High School gymnasium, the North Laurel High School gymnasium, the London Community Center, and London Elementary School (during town center events). Although the timeline for a full recovery looks like years, city leaders are reminding their community that they're not doing it alone. 'With this recent disaster, that seems to be the goal of the community itself—we take care of one another, and the love that's come out from everybody is just amazing,' Daugherty added. Weddle is also asking people to sign up with FEMA. They are set up at the Laurel County library. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Full Strawberry Moon expected to rise in Kentucky sky
Video note: Despite this article's time stamp, the above video is the latest forecast from The Weather Authority. LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — June's full moon, also known as the Strawberry Moon, will be the lowest full moon that has appeared in the night sky in nearly 20 years. The moon will be visible in the sky Tuesday night and the morning of June 11, rising around 8:30 p.m. EST and peaking at around 3:45 a.m. The Strawberry Moon's name doesn't come from its color but rather from its appearance, originally occurring around the time of the summer strawberry harvest. Latest central Kentucky weather forecast The 2025 Strawberry Moon is special because it will appear during a major lunar standstill, an event that occurs approximately every 18 to 19 years, during which the moon appears lower in the sky. Tuesday night's forecast will bring optimal viewing conditions with a mainly clear sky expected. Wildfire smoke is back in the region and likely provides hazy skies but shouldn't obstruct the view. How can Kentuckians maximize their A/C unit during the summer months?
LANCASTER, Ky. (FOX 56) – As temperatures continue to climb, more and more people are cranking up their A/C units. Kentuckians have likely had the urge to crank up their air conditioning to the fullest to beat the heat. However, that could be the wrong mindset to have. Karen Hughes with ADA Heating & Air said there are some things to do before turning on the A/C unit for the first time for the summer. Doing a maintenance check will ensure the unit is actually ready to run. It's also advised to make sure the area around the unit is clean, which will prevent potential hiccups during the summer from things getting caught in the unit. 'Make sure there's no leaks and that'll keep you running smoother. Also, one of the best things to do is to change your filter. Make sure your filter is not dirty. I've seen that happen; that can cause more damage than just about anything.' Hughes also said that in order to maximize the health of the A/C unit, don't put it on the coldest setting possible. Although it may seem tempting, the ideal range is about 70 to 72 degrees. The last thing anyone wants is for their A/C to break, especially during the summer. Hughes said there are some simple ways to save money when it comes to your system. Chief among them is checking all electrical outlets, making sure everything is plugged in correctly without having to call a specialist. Consumers will also want to make sure all the compressors are running and the evaporator coil is clean. 'If the unit has stopped working, just flip the breaker and see if that's the issue. A lot of times, that is, and it's an easy fix. An easy, free fix.' Hughes also said HVAC and A/C units need to be constantly maintained and that a good habit to get into to prevent overworking the system is to have someone check it every time you get your oil changed, or at least twice a year.
