Bahama Breeze just closed more than one-third of its locations
Bahama Breeze abruptly closed more than one-third of its restaurants this week, further compounding the casual dining segment's problems.
Darden Restaurants, Bahama Breeze's parent company, said in a statement that the closure of 15 locations was the 'right decision because it will allow Bahama Breeze to focus on its highest performing restaurants and strengthen the brand's overall performance.'
Restaurants that closed include five in Florida, four in New Jersey and one in Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New York and Tennessee. A spokesperson said that affected employees will try to be hired at nearby Darden-owned restaurants or be given severance.
The Caribbean-inspired chain has just 29 restaurants remaining. The closures comes after a tough year for Bahama Breeze, with sales falling 7.7% last year, according to data given to CNN from Technomic, a restaurant analysis firm.
Bahama Breeze's struggles underscore the 'tough times casual dining restaurants are facing,' said Maeve Webster, president of consulting firm Menu Matters. Those chains typically cater to lower and middle-income families looking for a sit-down meal, but diners are abandoning these companies as their disposable income shrinks because of inflation. American consumer sentiment plunged to a near-record low this month, the University of Michigan reported Friday.
Webster told CNN that 'closing poorly performing units can be better for the chain overall than trying to fix them' because pouring resources into rescuing the poorly performing locations can 'undermine the entire chain.'
'It's similar to rationalizing a menu: Better to eliminate items that aren't selling or rarely selling to improve the quality and consistency of what remains,' Webster remarked.
Darden, which also owns Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, had a tough quarter, particularly at those two brands, which are often standout chains for the company. Both concepts had weak same-store sales growth that came in below analysts' expectations.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said Tuesday that he is hopeful lawmakers in Springfield will reach a transit deal before the Chicago Transit Authority hits a fiscal cliff. When asked about how to raise revenue, Mayor Johnson suggested a tax on the wealthy. "There's been some conversations about a millionaires' tax and other forms of progressive taxation that challenges the ultra-rich to pay their fair share," Johnson said. "I think that it's important that, you know, we come up with solutions that are sustainable, and that they don't overwhelm, you know, the pocketbooks of working people." This past weekend just before a crucial Saturday night deadline, Illinois state lawmakers passed a $55.2 billion state budget plan for the next federal year. But while the Illinois Senate advanced a measure to overhaul and provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for the Chicago area's mass transit system, the Illinois House didn't take it up before adjourning its spring session. Transit officials have said the Regional Transportation Authority system is facing a $771 million budget deficit in 2026, and if state lawmakers don't come up with that funding by this summer, the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra, and Pace must start laying out plans for service cuts of up to 40% for next year. To fund transit, Democratic lawmakers in Springfield called for a $1.50 tax on deliveries like Amazon, Grubhub, and Uber Eats, a 10% tax on rideshare trips, and add a new tax to charge electric vehicles. A surcharge on tolls has also been suggested. Mayor Johnson did not comment on the other revenue ideas floated by Illinois lawmakers during eth Spring Session. While the Chicago area's mass transit systems are funded through the end of the year, and there will likely be a fall veto session that could provide another shot at an 11th-hour rescue, transportation officials said without funding guarantees for 2026 in place by this summer, they'll have to start laying out the specific cuts next week to prepare for any potential service reductions next year. The CTA has said without the minimum funding it is seeking from the state, it would be forced to eliminate some or all service on at least four of its eight rail lines, close or dramatically reduce service at more than 50 rail stations, and eliminate 74 of 127 bus routes starting next year. The CTA has not yet said which specific 'L' and bus lines and 'L' stops would be affected. Meanwhile, Metra has said it would have to eliminate all early morning and late evening trains, reduce weekday train service to one train per hour on each route, and cut weekend train service to one train every two hours on each route. New Jersey Turnpike to Replace Tesla Chargers After Contract Expires
The agency that runs the New Jersey Turnpike is replacing the more than 60 superchargers for Tesla vehicles along the highway after the state did not renew its contract with the electric-car maker. New Jersey officials said in a statement on Friday that the state would shift to another company that would provide universal charging stations. The change, already underway, will almost triple the number of charging stations along the turnpike and the Garden State Parkway, a second major toll road, where chargers are being added for the first time. The decision drew an apparently irked response from the company's chief executive, Elon Musk. 'Sounds like corruption,' he wrote on his social media platform, X, on Friday night, without providing any evidence. Mr. Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. Thomas Feeney, a spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, which operates the highways, said that the decision was both about increasing the number of stations and providing chargers that were compatible with more than just Tesla vehicles. 'Our goal is to serve as many E.V. owners as possible across all our service areas,' he said. The state has amended its agreement with Applegreen, an Irish company that already manages restaurants and stores in the turnpike's service areas, to include its new line of fast charging stations to replace the Tesla equipment and build new stations elsewhere. Oilers slightly favored over Panthers in Stanley Cup Final rematch
LAS VEGAS — The Stanley Cup Final is so close to being a tossup, Florida would likely be favored if the Panthers had home-ice advantage. But that edge belongs to Edmonton, which largely explains why the Oilers are slight favorites to win the series, which begins Wednesday. 'However you want to look at this pie, you could make an argument that either team could be favored,' Caesars Sportsbook head of hockey Karry Shreeve said. 'Home ice is definitely playing a part. You're just playing the percentages. The team that wins Game 1 of the Stanley Cup, they go on to win roughly 75% of the time.' BetMGM Sportsbook lists the Oilers as -130 favorites to win Game 1 and take that important 1-0 series lead. The sportsbook makes Edmonton as the -125 favorite to become the first Canadian team since Montreal in 1993 to hoist the Stanley Cup. Defending champion Florida, which beat Edmonton in seven games last year, is the +105 underdog. BetMGM trading manager Christian Cipollini said about 55% of the money has come in on the Oilers. 'I would expect that to probably continue,' Cipollini said. 'I think we'll probably take a little more Oilers money just because of Connor McDavid, but this is a rematch. Florida won last year, so I think we will end up getting an even projection.' Hockey handicapper Alex B. Smith, who co-hosts The Ice Guys podcast, doesn't buy the Oilers should be favored. 'Are they really going to give McDavid back-to-back Conn Smythes in losing efforts?' Cipollini asked. 'He is the favorite because of the points scored and there's already a precedent that they could give it to him here, but that's something to watch as the games get going. If there is a Florida player that isn't really standing out ... there is a real world where it could be him again in a losing effort.' Relying on Skinner Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner has long been viewed as a weakness on the roster, a reputation that appeared to be sealed when he was benched two games into the playoffs. But Skinner is a major reason Edmonton is still playing. He has allowed one or zero goals in five of his past seven starts, three of them shutouts. Another great run in the net could put Skinner, listed +3500 at BetMGM, in position to win the Conn Smythe. 'I would not have told you this was sustainable before,' Smith said of Skinner's hot play. 'Now, with one series left, it certainly is sustainable.' Experienced vs. tired Panthers Florida is making its third consecutive appearance in the Stanley Cup Final, another deep run in which fatigue could finally catch up to the Panthers. Or they could simply be on a heater having won 10 of their previous 11 playoff series. Shreeve said the metrics point to a Panthers championship and though either outcome would be fine with Caesars, a Florida victory would be better. 'I don't hate where we're at with this one,' Shreeve said. 'Last year was a little bit tougher because more people liked Florida, but people are all about Edmonton this postseason, which I like.' NBA romp could benefit NHL Because this series apparently could go either way and Oklahoma City is heavily favored over Indiana in the NBA Finals, that could increase betting interest in the Stanley Cup Final. 'I think it helps the NBA is getting the less sexier matchup,' Shreeve said. 'The more bettable series is going to be Edmonton-Florida. If things stay tight, it has a chance to go six or seven games, which would help.'
