Why this startup is mining seaweed to power EVs

On farms off the coast of Alaska and in Mexico, a company called Blue Evolution grows seaweed used in food and skincare products. But five years ago, while studying the potential for seaweed to be used in bioenergy, the company discovered something else: The algae also contains critical minerals.
The research, conducted with Pacific Northwest National Labs, identified the presence of scandium, an expensive rare earth element that's produced in tiny volumes globally. The seaweed also contains other rare earth elements and platinum group metals that can be used to make products ranging from EV batteries to motors for wind turbines. 'That generated a lot of excitement,' says Beau Perry, CEO of Blue Evolution. 'Everyone was like, 'Can you mine with seaweed?''
The company undertook more research into the area, and today it launched a new initiative, Orca Minerals, that's focused on the new form of mining. Instead of blasting rocks or the seabed, the process makes use of the fact that seaweed naturally absorbs minerals from seawater as it grows.
At its lab in San Jose, the company is analyzing samples of seaweed that it grows in seawater tanks on the Mexican coast and in the ocean in Alaska. With the right location, and the right strain of seaweed, Perry says, it's possible to harvest meaningful amounts of certain minerals. The team identifies and selectively breeds seaweed strains, and is currently analyzing one of those proprietary strains. 'We're starting to select the characteristics that should yield more, with faster growth, but also more solid content and more mineral content,' Perry says.
The content of critical minerals like cobalt or palladium is small, but that's also true in traditional mining. 'When you're mining rare earths, it's just mostly wasted material. You need a huge amount of rock,' he says. 'Rare earth elements are not that much more concentrated in those deposits than in some of the seaweed samples we've seen.'
Some other startups are working on processes to extract minerals from land using plants, like a company called Metalplant that's mining nickel with crops grown in Albania. Seaweed has some advantages: It grows much more quickly and can concentrate minerals at a higher proportion, so the yield can be greater. And while there's a fixed stock of minerals in soil, currents in the ocean continually replenish supply.
The rest of the seaweed also has value—as nutrients, pigments, or carbon that can be used to make seaweed-based textiles, plastic, and other materials; critical minerals are a side benefit. As the biomaterials market grows, that would simultaneously mean more potential to displace traditional mining on land. If the company grows seven-figure tons of dry seaweed in Alaska to meet demand for biomaterials, for example, Perry says it could also produce enough scandium to be a major player in the global market. (For some other minerals and elements that are produced at bigger scales, it would contribute a much smaller percentage.)
Mining from seaweed, rather than rocks, could help avoid some of the environmental impact of getting components that are necessary in things like electronics and EV batteries. Traditional mining destroys wildlife habitats; pollutes water, soil, and the air; uses large amounts of energy; and creates piles of waste. The Trump administration also wants to fast-track deep-sea mining—extracting minerals from the ocean floor—something scientists say could cause irreparable harm to marine ecosystems.
Growing and harvesting seaweed doesn't cause those problems. Refining minerals from seaweed also takes less energy and is a cleaner process than traditional refining, Perry says. The company is working on its own green-chemistry-based extraction techniques that could potentially bypass the need to use a secondary refinery.
The work is still in progress, and the company wants to ensure it can predictably harvest a certain volume of critical minerals from its seaweed. But it expects to have an operational prototype by 2027. Commercial production could begin in 2028.

Consumers' hunger for new vehicles persisted in May, but affordability concerns could cool sales this month as dealerships start running short on cars and SUVs delivered ahead of President Donald Trump's 25% tariffs. Ford Motor Co.'s U.S. sales increased 16% year-over-year last month. Hyundai Motor Co.'s grew 8%, while Kia Corp.'s rose 5%. Subaru Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp., however, did report declines of 10% and 19%, respectively. General Motors Co. and Stellantis NV will report second-quarter sales next month. Spring typically marks a surge in vehicle sales, as tax returns hit bank accounts and the weather warms up. But consumer sentiment has plunged to some of its lowest levels in decades amid frequently changing rules on tariffs, and concerns that vehicle prices could climb later this year have led some consumers to pull forward their purchases. S&P Global Mobility forecasted May sales up 2% compared to a year ago, but predicted sales were slowing to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 15.7 million vehicles, down from 17.6 million from March to April. "Consumer confidence is down, but the sales are not," said Stephanie Brinley, associate director of research and analysis at S&P's AutoIntelligence. "It doesn't usually work that way." With inventories down and non-tariffed models increasingly eaten up, the "affordability bullet has not come through yet. There's a little bit of wait-and-see for what automakers really do," Brinley added, noting June could start revealing the direction companies choose to take. Some have given consumers confidence that they can wait a bit. Ford, through the July 4 weekend, is offering its customers thousands of dollars per vehicle in discounts typically reserved for its employees, though in early May, it did increase by up to $2,000 the price of its Mexico-built vehicles because of tariffs. Stellantis - the parent of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and other brands - is offering a similar employee discount program, which it has extended through June. Volkswagen AG has said it will hold to its current manufacturer's suggested retail prices through June. GM CEO Mary Barra has said the automaker doesn't expect major price increases. But imports are expected to slow, which will mean less availability of vehicles and encourage price increases, Charlie Chesbrough, senior economist at dealer digital services provider Cox Automotive Inc., said in a May forecast. "As more tariffed products replace existing inventory over the summer," he said, "prices are expected to be pushed higher, leading to slower sales in the coming months." Some dealers are already noticing some wariness. "I haven't seen people this cautious since before, or during, the early stages of COVID," said Jim Walen, the owner of Stellantis and Hyundai showrooms in Seattle. The ports in Seattle look "empty," he said. Major layoffs in Washington by Microsoft Corp. haven't helped business either. Stellantis' employee discount program, however, is a boon: "Anytime you can affect the transaction price, it's a good thing." Meanwhile, some dealers are going to pull back over revenue concerns, Walen said, but he's taking a different approach: "We're very aggressive. We stock a lot, we're part of the community, we advertise a lot." Some pull-ahead sales still seem to be occurring over tariff concerns, but other shoppers are dropping out of the market altogether, said Ivan Drury, director of insights at auto information website Inc. It may still be too early to determine if the circumstances will affect vehicle segments, but for now, there appears to be limited downgrading, as some customers would rather hold off than get a vehicle without certain features. There are also wide-ranging views on tariffs, how they work and the impact they will have, he added: "Not everybody's on the same page." There, however, are some trends. More consumers bought out their leases in May than in April, rather than leasing again. That could be a sign customers are seeking to limit increases to their monthly payments, but it also means they're stepping out of the market, Drury said. He added that inventory is declining, but there's still too much stock - more than 2.5 million vehicles are on dealer lots - to see substantial price increases. "The last time when we had people really get hit with price increases, where it took them back, was when we were down to 1 million units," Drury said. "And that's where you start to see that crossover between consumers getting a deal versus consumers just dealing and saying, 'OK, fine, I'll pay MSRP. I'll pay above.' " The share of electric vehicles in the market was forecasted to continue slipping. EV share was about 7% in March and April, and S&P was predicting it would be 6.8% in May. Ford EV sales last month were down by a quarter, driven by decreases in the F-150 Lightning pickup and Transit commercial van. Trump has pulled federal funding for EV charging infrastructure and directed his administration to reevaluate greenhouse gas tailpipe emission regulations and incentives that could be construed as an "EV mandate." The U.S. Senate last month also removed a waiver that enabled California and a contingent of states to enforce stricter zero-emission requirements on passenger vehicle sales. The result is an uncertain policy environment around EVs. "They've been trending a little bit down the whole year," Brinley said. "It may be some people looking for an EV in January bought, expecting the incentives to go away, but they're not afraid of that anymore." Rhett Ricart, who has eight new-vehicle storefronts for brands from Ford and Chevrolet to Nissan and Mitsubishi in and near Columbus, Ohio, said tariffs and policy changes are on the minds of EV buyers, but he otherwise describes sales as normal. "A possible tariff scare people had doesn't seem to exist," Ricart said, adding about expectations that Trump or the judicial system will offer some clarity on import taxes: "For any jitteriness, we will hopefully find out if the tariffs stick soon." Modelo's new NA beer might have the best logo of the year

The world is awash in nonalcoholic beer right now. Athletic led the category with some $95.8 million in sales in 2024, followed by the legacy barons Heineken ($89.45 million), Budweiser ($62.37 million), Busch ($37.08 million), and Corona ($28.6 million). As Beverage Industry reports, 0% beer is predicted to continue growing by double digits this year, so it comes as no surprise that Modelo—which overtook Bud Light as the U.S.'s leading beer in 2023—is getting into the game. What does come as a surprise is the logo of its new alcohol-free beer. Some brands, like Heineken, simply made a few tweaks and added a '0.0.' Others, like Budweiser, stripped the can of color (conceptually fun!) and added a 'Zero.' But none of them were as perfectly primed to go NA as Modelo. The brand's new logo is as serendipitous as it is straightforward, but no less sublime. It almost feels like an intervention by the design gods, perhaps not unlike the FedEx arrow. And that's likely why there was no debate when Gut Design presented the work to Modelo. It was an instant 'go.' 'You cannot unsee that, right?' says Murilo Melo, Gut's global head of design. 'They said . . . we don't have to see anything else. It was kind of a magic moment.' Model0% Around six months ago, Modelo brought the Gut agency on to oversee the strategy and branding of what would become Model0% Dorada and Model0% Negra, which just launched in Mexico. The company was focused on creating a nonalcoholic beer that tasted like beer—or, rather, a nonalcoholic Modelo that tasted like Modelo, which the brand says it achieved via a proprietary yeast formula. When it came to the branding, Melo says Modelo needed a system that would work across multiple flavors and styles of its beer to prime it for the future. Given the company's success and its 100-plus-year history, 'there was an intention to honor the legacy of the brand,' Melo says. 'So what we tried the most was to preserve the equity and everything the brand already had.' They experimented with various concepts and hooks. But then, in an informal Gut team chat in WhatsApp, someone posted 'Model0%.' 'When we did that, we said, 'Whoa. There's something here.' ' Melo adds that his team has a mantra to keep things simple and powerful ('we always try, but it's quite hard')—and, well, they had stumbled upon a mark that visually signifies a nonalcoholic Modelo that tastes like the regular Modelo fans love. Gut built out a system for the brand that can scale across new NA products, featuring secondary typeface Rauschen B (a funky, unexpected choice), a '0%' label at the top of the bottle sporting the 'o' of the legacy logo, and more. The bottle does away with the lions, banner, and other elements from the original. But look closely at that 'o,' and you'll indeed find some of the parallel line motifs from the full-strength formula. Ultimately, it all yielded that immediate green light from Modelo. 'Everybody was so on board to respect the visual legacy of the beer, and open to something new,' Melo says. 'It was a perfect match.' How often does that happen? 'Less than I would like it to,' he says with a laugh.
