Nearly 400,000 teachers to be trained with AI-powered tools, says Sim

KUALA LUMPUR: As part of efforts to prepare the workforce for the artificial intelligence (AI) era, the Human Resources Ministry has introduced a large-scale programme to train almost 400,000 teachers in AI-powered teaching methods. Its Minister, Steven Sim, said the programme involving 395,000 educators, called 'AI for Educators', will be carried out in collaboration with the Education Ministry. He said it aims not only to equip teachers with technical AI skills but also to deepen their understanding of ethical considerations in using such technologies in the classroom. 'Our teachers are the frontliners in human capital development. 'They must be empowered with the latest knowledge and tools to prepare our people for the challenges of the AI era. 'This reflects not only the commitment of the Human Resources Ministry but also the wider commitment of the Madani government to ensure our educators lead the way,' he said in his speech at the National Training Week (NTW) 2025 Summit in Bukit Jalil here on Saturday (June 14). Sim also revealed that this year's NTW had surpassed all expectations, with over two million Malaysians participating in free training sessions, doubling the initial target of one million. 'This is the third year we are organising NTW, and it has grown in scale and impact. 'Last year we reached around 300,000 participants. This year, we've gone beyond our target even during the launch week,' he said. According to Sim, over 71,000 free training sessions were offered across the country, with more than 40% of them focused on Industry 4.0-related skills, including digital tools, automation and emerging technologies. He also extended an invitation to citizens from across Asean, saying that this year's NTW was open not just to Malaysians, but also to participants from neighbouring countries, a move in line with Malaysia's role as Asean Chair this year. 'This is our commitment to building regional human capital and strengthening cooperation in a rapidly evolving economic landscape,' he said.

Indonesia's President Prabowo receives call from Trump ahead of Russia visit

INDONESIA: President Prabowo Subianto received a 15-minute phone call from United States President Donald Trump (pic) on Thursday (June 12) evening, during which both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and supporting global stability, just days before Prabowo is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "As leaders of two major countries, President Prabowo and President Trump agreed to deepen cooperation between Indonesia and the US,' Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said in a statement on Friday (June 13). 'Both reiterated their support for efforts to maintain global peace and stability'. The call marked the second conversation between the two presidents since Trump's re-election in 2024. They last spoke in November, when Prabowo congratulated Trump on his victory. Thursday's call came ahead of Prabowo's state visit to Moscow, where he is scheduled to meet Putin on Wednesday. The visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-Russia diplomatic relations and is expected to result in a joint declaration and at least three memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on cooperation. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rolliansyah Soemirat confirmed that the president would not attend the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Canada on Tuesday, citing a scheduling conflict. Prabowo is set to travel to Singapore on Monday before continuing on to Russia. Rolliansyah noted that the Moscow visit had been planned since 2024. Prabowo's diplomatic balancing act comes amid escalating tensions between Washington and Moscow over Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump recently described Putin as 'crazy' for intensifying attacks on Ukrainian cities, warning that such aggression could lead to Russia's downfall. Despite the geopolitical strain, Prabowo has maintained Jakarta's ties with Moscow, particularly in trade and defense procurement. He also held talks with Putin last year, ahead of his presidential inauguration in October. - The Jakarta Post/ANN

Vigilance against provocateurs, foreign agents crucial for Malaysia, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a stern warning against provocateurs and foreign agents aiming to destabilise Malaysia, referencing a past case involving two Malaysians linked to the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. In a strongly worded speech underscoring Malaysia's independent foreign policy and stance on justice, the Prime Minister reminded Malaysians to remain vigilant against subversive elements. "Let there be no instigators. Do not allow provocateurs or foreign agents to undermine what we have built. There are those who, out of envy or on behalf of foreign powers, aim to destabilise our country and erode our values," he said at the National Training Week (NTW) 2025 summit in Bukit Jalil on Saturday (June 14). He referenced a 2022 incident where two Malaysians, a husband and wife, aided Mossad operatives in entering the country through Thailand. "Let us not forget: previously, a Mossad agent entered Malaysia… I commend the Royal Malaysia Police for successfully arresting and charging those involved." Anwar said a "Negara Madani" must reflect both sovereignty and moral clarity, especially on issues of human rights such as the situation in Gaza. "Just yesterday, Israel launched another brutal attack. We strongly condemn it. How is it that one country is allowed to carry out such violence repeatedly and with impunity? Even worse is when people in Malaysia, an independent nation, are afraid to speak up," he said. Anwar also called on the nation's youth not to be easily misled. "Do not be naive. Do not be easily deceived by what you see on social media." The prime minister's remarks follow renewed Israeli air strikes, which he described as part of a long-standing pattern of impunity. He stressed that Malaysia's principled stance on Gaza will not be swayed by international pressure. "This is what it means to be a 'Negara Madani'. We do not care whether certain countries approve or not," he said.
