India cuts import tax on crude edible oils to help reduce food prices

Khaleej Times2 days ago

India halved the basic import tax on crude edible oils to 10% on Friday, the government said, as the world's biggest vegetable oil importer tries to bring down food prices and help the local refining industry.
The customs duty applies to crude palm oil, crude soyoil and crude sunflower oil.
It will effectively bring down the total import duty on the three oils to 16.5% from earlier 27.5% as they are also subject to India's Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess and Social Welfare Surcharge.
"This is a win-win situation for vegetable oil refiners as well as consumers, as local prices will go down due to the duty reduction," said B.V. Mehta, executive director of the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA).
The government did not change the import duty on refined palm oil, refined soyoil or refined sunflower oil, which currently attract a 35.75% import tax.
The import duty gap between refined and crude edible oils has risen to 19.25%, which will prompt importers to bring in crude edible oils instead of refined oils and boost the local refining industry, Mehta said.
India meets more than 70% of its vegetable oil demand through imports. It buys palm oil mainly from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, while it imports soyoil and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine.
Sandeep Bajoria, CEO of Sunvin Group, a vegetable oil brokerage, said the cut in the basic duty would bring down edible oil prices and help revive retail demand, which has been subdued in recent months.

Venkatesh Iyer, Glenn Maxwell and other IPL 2025 flops

For every success story, there are many tales of failure. In this year's IPL, there has been no dearth of players who have missed their mark. However, even here there is a hierarchy. There were a number of players still finding their feet or new to the tournament who failed to impress. You can't pick too many faults in that. However, there are some who, despite their reputation, experience and hefty salary, performed poorly. Below we take a look at the biggest flops of IPL 2025. Venkatesh Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders) Innings: 7, Runs: 142, 50s: 1 It was an unmitigated disaster for the left-handed batter. Bought back by the franchise for an exorbitant sum of $2.8 million, and also discussed as a possible captain following the departure of the title winning Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh fell flat with the bat and looks set to be shipped out. More than anything, Kolkata's decision to let a title winning captain go, while splurging on a decent at best T20 cricketer is what rankles the most. The pressure of the price tag probably got to him. Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants) Innings: 13, Runs: 269, Avg: 24.45, SR: 133.16, 100s: 1, 50s: 1 Pant scored a century in the last match of the season for Lucknow, with very little to gain. But even with that ton, Pant failed spectacularly in his first season as captain of the Super Giants and the most expensive player in IPL history – with a salary of $3.2m. Granted, Lucknow lost almost their entire frontline bowling attack to injury. But they had a few overseas players in great form with the bat – namely Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram. All they needed was Pant to play a few useful knocks here and there. But the wicketkeeper captain failed on all counts. His batting is looking ungainly and he just does not look the part in T20 cricket. Mohammad Shami (Sunrisers Hyderabad) M: 9, Wkts: 6, Econ: 11.23 The India pace veteran is trying to make a strong comeback from long-term leg injuries but he has just not been the same since the 2023 ODI World Cup. He has suffered numerous setbacks on his return from injury and in the IPL struggled to pick wickets or restrict runs – something many of his contemporaries did throughout on wickets conducive to bowlers. Shami should consider himself lucky if he continues to get picked in top-level competitions. Ravichandran Ashwin (Chennai Super Kings) M: 9, Wkts: 7, Econ: 9.12 For some reason, Chennai management thought Ashwin was worth over a million dollars during the auction. Actually, it does not come as a surprise as they also thought that Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda and Vijay Shankar are a good T20 middle order. Ashwin has lost his zip, already replaced by Washington Sundar at the national level. Predominant finger spinners have almost no space in the IPL, and that too those at the end of their careers. Chennai quickly moved on from him. Glenn Maxwell (Punjab Kings) M: 7, Runs: 48, Avg: 8.00 The Aussie is a proven performer at the international level, especially during major tournaments, but has missed his mark for two straight seasons in IPL. Maxwell was disastrously poor, even in a winning side like Punjab filled with in-form batters. Not sure how many franchises will pick him in future. But then again, there is a T20 World Cup early next year. He might shine there and all could be forgotten. Jake Fraser-McGurk (Delhi Capitals) Innings: 6, Runs: 55, Avg: 9.16 There was a fear that the young Aussie batter's technique could soon be unraveled as he does not have an all-round game and looks susceptible on pitches with any sort of help. Unfortunately for Fraser-McGurk, teams had already done their homework on his technique and the pitches were more than responsive. After six failures, the 23-year-old was benched. He will now have to go back to the drawing board to show the franchise, and possibly the Australian selectors, that he is not a one trick pony.

Explained: Why BTS' label Hybe's chairman is facing life imprisonment over fraud allegations

BTS fans around the world are eagerly waiting for the K-pop band's reunion after the remaining members are released from military duty in June. However, Bang Si-hyuk, the man who formed BTS, is currently under investigation after being accused of fraudulent and unfair trading practices. According to Korean media outlets, Bang Si-hyuk, 52, is being investigated by the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) for allegedly misleading investors and bagging about 400 billion won ($289 million) during the company's initial public offering (IPO) process. Did Bang Si-hyuk deceive investors? Sources say the FSS has evidence suggesting Bang may have engaged in deceptive practices involving private equity firms. Back in 2019, when Hybe was still known as BigHit Entertainment, existing shareholders were told there was had no immediate plans to go public, persuading some investors to sell their stakes to a private equity fund allegedly set up by an associate. However, the company simultaneously began the process to go public after Bang allegedly signed a private shareholders' agreement with local PEFs to share profits from a future listing, a deal that was not disclosed at the time. While investors suffered heavy losses from the post-IPO sell-off, the private equity fund reaped a large profit after the company went public. The alleged gains from the scheme are estimated at around 400 billion won ($290 million). The BigHit IPO filed in October 2020 increased Bang's net worth to $2.8 billion, reportedly making him the only billionaire in South Korea's entertainment industry and the sixth-richest person in the country. Could it lead to life imprisonment? The FSS is investigating Bang's transactions with the PEFs and plans to refer the case to prosecutors for potential criminal prosecution, according to KED Global. HYBE's alleged secret profit-sharing agreement between Bang and the PEFs could constitute a violation of disclosure rules under the Capital Markets Act. If found guilty, Bang could face a prison sentence of five years or more, or a life sentence, if the profit exceeds 5 billion won. Meanwhile, BTS ARMY around the world are eagerly waiting for the seven band members to reunite. While j-hope and Jin have already completed their mandatory military service, Jungkook, Jumin, V, RM and Suga are set to be released from their duties in June.

Hong Kong-headquartered International Mediation Body Established

HONG KONG SAR - Media OutReach Newswire - 31 May 2025 - International mediation marked a significant milestone yesterday (May 30) with the establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed). The IOMed, with its headquarters in Hong Kong, is the world's first inter-governmental international legal organisation devoted to the use of mediation in resolving international disputes. More than 80 countries and about 20 international organisations, including the United Nations, sent senior representatives to Hong Kong to witness the Signing Ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation. Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Wang Yi, attended the Signing Ceremony and was the first to sign the Convention on behalf of China. Altogether, 33 countries signed the Convention on-site, making them the founding members of the IOMed. Addressing the ceremony, Mr Wang said that as an innovative step in international rule of law, the IOMed has great significance in the history of international relations. The IOMed will be headquartered in Hong Kong, whose handover is itself a success story of peaceful settlement of international disputes. He added that the success of the "one country, two systems" principle has created brighter prospects for prosperity and stability in Hong Kong. Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), John Lee, thanked the Central Government for its staunch support of Hong Kong, and the international community for placing their trust and confidence in the city. "The IOMed will provide a pathway for countries – regardless of culture, language and legal system – to resolve international disputes based on mutual respect and understanding," Mr Lee said. "This is increasingly important amid mounting geopolitical tensions." Mr Lee underscored that the IOMed reflected a shared confidence in mediation as a peaceful means to maintain international peace and security, as stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations. The Chief Executive also set out Hong Kong's advantages as an effective "super connector" and "super value-adder" and said the city would actively promote the IOMed's valuable work in settling international disputes through mediation. "Despite geopolitical turbulence, Hong Kong builds bridges, not walls," Mr Lee said. "Under our unique "one country, two systems" principle, Hong Kong is the only world city that enjoys both the China advantage and the global advantage. "We are the only common law jurisdiction in China, and the only jurisdiction in the world with a bilingual common law system in both Chinese and English. We have a long tradition of the rule of law, and our courts exercise their judicial power independently." With a robust, efficient and well-respected legal system as well as world-class legal and dispute resolution services professionals, Hong Kong is also the most preferred seat for arbitration in the Asia-Pacific region. The IOMed headquarters will be located at the site of the former Wan Chai Police Station, once renovation of the Grade 2 historic building is completed. "I'm happy to say that it could open its doors as early as the end of this year," said Mr Lee. "We look forward not only to welcoming its new occupants, but also to supporting them in building new bridges for a more connected, peaceful and prosperous future through mediation." In the afternoon, the Global Forum on International Mediation discussed topics such as mediation of disputes among countries and mediation of international investment and commercial disputes and the contributions that the IOMed can make.
