NIA to take over probe into explosives loot
Bhubaneswar: National Investigation Agency (NIA) is all set to take over the investigation from Odisha police into the loot of industrial explosives by Maoists from a stone quarry in Sundargarh district.

"Considering the gravity of the offence, the NIA has obtained an order from its designated court in Bhubaneswar to suo motu take over the probe from K Balang police under Rourkela police district. They will officially take over the case files in a day or two," a senior police officer told TOI.
The police officer said, "The central counter-terrorism probe agency was assisting K Balang police in the investigation. An NIA team had visited the crime scene at the stone quarry in Banko on May 28, a day after the loot took place."
This marks the first case undertaken by the NIA's Odisha branch following the establishment of its police station in Bhubaneswar last month, police sources said.
On Sunday, Rourkela police arrested Maoist informer George Munda (43), a local, for allegedly collaborating with Maoists from Jharkhand in the theft of 5,000 kg of gelatin sticks on May 27. Around 3,800 kg of explosives have been recovered.
NIA intends to interrogate Munda in their custody to establish 'forward and backward' linkages related to the offence having multi-state ramification.
Police sources revealed that Munda had several meetings with Maoist leader Anmol alias Lalchand Hembram before the explosives theft. His arrest raised concerns for security agencies, as Sundargarh had been declared Maoist-free by the ministry of home affairs in April 2024.
The police officer added, "Given the Centre's target to wipe out Maoists from the country by March 2026, the NIA's involvement in the case investigation is essential to unravel a potential bigger anti-national crime plan of the rebels."

Maoists kill kin of surrendered cadres in Chandigarh

Air India Plane Crash: On June 12, local residents became the first responders when an Air India flight came down crashing at a hostel for medical students in Ahmedabad and immediately blew up in flames, in one of the worst plane crashes of India. As per a report by The Times of India, Patel and his crew responded to the accident within five minutes of the Air India plane crash. "For the first 15 to 20 minutes, we could barely get close. The fire was too intense," Patel was quoted as saying by The Times of India. He said that his team could only help when the fire brigade and the ambulance arrived, and they did not waste time to jump into action. 'But once the first fire brigade and 108 ambulances arrived, we jumped in to help.' 'We did what we could,' Patel, whose team was there at the site till 9 pm, told the newspaper. As more disaster management personnel got deployed at the Air India crash site on June 12, Patel's team did what came next – searching through the wreckage. While combing through the area, the businessman's team found countless baggage burned and scattered around the area. Not only this, Patel found about 70 tolas (around 800 grams) of gold, ₹ 80,000 in cash, a Bhagwad Gita and some passports. All of their findings were handed over to the authorities, as per the TOI report. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi announced on Sunday that all the retrieved items will be identified and sent to the next of kin of the victims. 'I'm just grateful we could do something,' Patel was quoted as saying by TOI. Patel also has a history of volunteering during the Ahmedabad serial blasts, but said he will never forget the Air India plane crash. 'I was just 100m from the civil hospital when a bomb went off. But the destruction here... the flames... I will never forget this,' he said.

Pune sex racketeer Kalyani Deshpande arrested for ganja smuggling
Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch on Monday arrested infamous sex racketeer Kalyani Deshpande from Andhra Pradesh pertaining to 20.7 kg ganja seizure from her garment store and a flat on Sus Road area on May 24. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now An anti-narcotics cell of the crime branch, led by senior inspector Santosh Patil, received a tip-off that Deshpande was in the Rajanagaram in the East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. "Assistant inspector Vikram Gaikwad reached there and took Deshpande into custody with the help of our local informer," Santosh Patil told TOI. Patil said Deshpande has been handed over to the Bavdhan police for further investigations. The police on May 24 arrested her's husband, niece, and niece's husband after they recovered 20.7 kg of ganja from the basement of her garment store 'Kalyani Collection' and her flat on Sus Road. "We arrested the three people, but Deshpande managed to escape from there," Patil said. Patil said Deshpande has as many as eight cases against her, including a murder and running a prostitution racket, with the Pune city police. Her name has cropped up in numerous cases of high-profile prostitution rackets in the last 15 years. In 2022, however, Deshpande was convicted for seven years by a special court in Pune in a case under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for running a sex racket. She subsequently appealed against the conviction before the Bombay High Court and secured bail pending appeal. In Jan 2024, the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar police arrested Deshpande pertaining to a high-profile sex racket in Satara. "Currently, she is out on bail. For the last five months, she has started smuggling ganja. We busted her ganja racket before she could set it up," he said.
