WGA West Penalizes 6 Members For Allegedly Breaking Strike Rules, Announces Multiple Disciplinary Appeals
The Writers Guild of America West on Friday publicly announced disciplinary action against six members for alleged unauthorized work during the union's 2023 strike, as well as one additional member for an alleged violation of the guild's constitution.
Four of those disciplined, which the WGAW named in a memo to members today, are appealing the decision.

Julie Bush, Tim Doyle, Edward Drake and Roma Roth are all pushing back against the union board's disciplinary rulings, which were determined via hearings before five-member trial juries. Bush, Drake and Roth are accused of writing during the strike.
Bush, whose credited as a consulting producer on Manhunt, has been suspended from the guild until next year and has been barred for life from holding non-elected guild office after being found guilty of violating Working Rule 8 and writing for a non-signatory company during the strike. Drake was expelled for allegedly writing during the strike and 'failing to cooperate' with the Strike Rules Compliance Committee. Roth, an executive producer of Sullivan's Crossing and Virgin River, has also been expelled for writing for a non-signatory company during the strike.
Last Man Standing showrunner Doyle's discipline is in regards to a Facebook post that the union called 'racist and offensive depiction of a lynching.' Deadline previously reported on this matter, when Doyle was censured last year.
Deadline has reached out to Bush, Drake and Roth for comment. Representatives for Doyle could not be reached.
Under guild rules, disciplined members are offered the opportunity to appeal the board's decision to the membership at large. Members in good standing will vote to decide whether to uphold the disciplinary action or adopt 'an alternative action proposed by the appellant,' as the guild states.
WGAW members will be able to vote on the four appeals online from 10 a.m. PT on May 6 until 2 p.m. PT on May 9.

The 'How to Train Your Dragon' director said the remake and original are almost identical because that's what Universal wanted
You'd expect the new " How to Train Your Dragon" live action remake to share some similarities with the original 2010 animation — but some fans and critics are not happy that they're almost identical shot-for-shot. Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the original and directed the live-action movie that is out Friday, told Business Insider that Universal Studios was clear from the beginning that it wanted the remake to tell the same story. Universal Studios jumped on the trend after Disney made over $8 billion from live-action remakes of its animations, according to data from Box Office Mojo. "How to Train Your Dragon" is arguably an unsurprising choice as one of the most successful animated movie franchises by Universal's animation branch, DreamWorks. All three movies were nominated for Oscars, and grossed $1.6 billion in total. DeBlois said Universal told him of the remake: "'We want that story but bring to it every embellishment you can. Let's go deeper into the mythology. "Let's deepen the characters, let's make it feel a little more mature. Let's lean into the action and make it more visceral and immersive." Universal didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. DeBlois said he agreed to make what would be his first live-action movie because he didn't want someone else adapting his work. "If you're going to do it, I want to do it because I know where the heart is, and I know these characters, I know this world," he recalled telling Universal. Although he's not a fan of live action remakes of animated movies, DeBlois said, he wanted to "be in charge of this one so I can preserve its integrity and pay tribute to the fans." He added: "The intention was always 'let's do another version of it, but not the version that would replace the animated movie.'" Meanwhile, Disney has been criticized for making too many changes in their live-action remakes of " Snow White" and " Lilo & Stitch." DeBlois acknowledged there was no way to make all fans happy, regardless of the extent of the changes. "This version, I feel, keeps the best of what was there and adds to it in good and subtle, and significant ways," Deblois said.

Elizabeth Hurley Cast in 'Mischievous' Career-First Role and Fans Are Already 'Obsessed'
Elizabeth Hurley has landed a head-turning new gig! Marking her return to TV screens—her last TV show appearances included Runaways and The Royals from 2015 through 2019—the 59-year-old actress has been cast as 'The Deceseased,' a dead, glamorous benefactor in a gripping new series. Appearing in The Inheritance, which will air on the UK's Channel 4, it also marks her foray into a competition series that's described as very high-stakes. Per the synopsis, 'Thirteen strangers are summoned to a grand stately home. They are there to compete for part of the fortune left in the will of The Deceased.' Contestants will have to work as a team to complete The Deceased's final request, including 'a series of devilishly difficult assignments that will demand they are clever, collaborative and cunning,' however, the twist is that only one player can claim the money gained in each request. Hurley released a statement calling it a 'thrill to be part of this clever game.' And fans shouldn't be surprised that the model will bring her A-game, noting, 'It all takes place on her huge estate in the English countryside, and she dresses to the nines in every scene.' Fans can also expect it to be as gripping and have the same allure as The Traitors, considering it hails from the same team, Studio Lambert. Steven Handley, Channel 4's Head of Reality & Entertainment, described the upcoming 12-episode show as "part Knives Out, part Succession", previously teasing the inclusion of "British icon" now revealed to be Hurley. 'The Inheritance isn't just a battle of strategy, alliances, and inevitable betrayals - it's a cocktail of drama, jeopardy, and outright mischief that Reality fans love. I can't wait to see how our players handle the challenges, the twists, and a few sneaky surprises, Handley revealed, per Deadline.
