Wrexham AFC chief executive officer Michael Williamson hasn't ruled out a poaching raid on A-League players who impress during the Red Dragons' three-match tour of Australia and New Zealand in July.
Owned by Hollywood stars and entrepreneurs Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham has enjoyed a meteoric rise, securing promotion three years in succession to have earnt a place in the English Championship for the 2025-26 season.
The next step – ascension to the Premier League – is set to prove the toughest so far for the Red Dragons, with the Championship including a host of former top-flight clubs desperate to again play in arguably the world's most popular club competition.
Williamson was under no illusions how tough a fourth successive promotion would be to achieve but said a pre-season that included a camp in Australia and New Zealand and games against Melbourne Victory (July 11, Marvel Stadium), Sydney FC (July 15, Allianz Stadium) and Wellington Phoenix (July 19, Sky Stadium) would not only provide the club with a solid foundation for next season but also could be a way to strengthen its squad.
Williamson is no stranger to A-League talent, having worked for US Major League Soccer club D.C. United at a time when striker Daniel Allsopp and Brazilian midfielder Fred – both former Melbourne Victory stars – played for the Washington-based outfit.
'I know the level and the talent that is there in the A-League, at least in that period, so that's the other interesting thing – to be able to go there and to see first hand some of the players and to be able to see their talent and level,' Williamson said.
'You never know, right? We're not like a Premier League club where we can fly scouts down to watch A-League matches.
'This would be our chance to watch some of that competition up close and watch those players up close as well.'
Williamson said Wrexham's tour to Australia made sense not only to further build the club's worldwide fan base but also as an ideal preparation for the new season.

'These pre-season tours are about preparing for the upcoming season, so when we schedule these tours, we're looking for good competition that's going to give our playing squad opportunity to get minutes under them to be able to prepare for the start of season because we want to hit the ground running,' he said.
'We've spent the last two (pre-seasons) in North America, and it's been fantastic, because beyond just the competition of preparing the players for the upcoming season, we obviously have developed a global fan base.
'To be able to connect with that global fan base has been absolutely fantastic in those markets. In North America especially, we've been able to do a lot of grassroots activation, creating fan zones in and around match days and being able to connect with fans at a local level.
'In looking at the metrics and the analysis, Australia and New Zealand was a logical next step for us after North America.'
Wrexham has more than four millions social media followers from this part of the world, while Australia is the third-largest audience of the club's Welcome to Wrexham docu-series.
'It was very logical to say this is great competition, great preparation, a good weather environment – to be able to come down to Australia and New Zealand is fantastic, and we're super excited about it,' Williamson said.

However, it has also been reported Slater's decision is a 'kick up the backside' for Carrigan not to get complacent. Slater has started the shadow games early with the under-pressure coach still having the option of making more changes in the hours before kick-off. Slater announced the Maroons squad by alphabetical order on Monday, instead of handing each player a jersey number. The bizarre decision to take Carrigan out of the starting team has left some NRL commentators staggered. The ABC's Zane Bojack posted on X: 'Don't understand Carrigan in bench. 'Surely he swaps with Moe before kick off. Got told it was a kick up the backside for Pat from Billy thinking he has got too comfortable.' The Maroons need to win in Perth on Wednesday, June 18, to keep the series alive. Slater has been forced to admit he got it wrong in selecting Cherry-Evans for the series opener with Cowboys halfback Tom Dearden to start in the halves alongside Cameron Munster. The storm five-eighth was on Tuesday unveiled as Queensland's captain. Munster was picked ahead of his Melbourne Storm captain and Maroons teammate Harry Grant as well as Gold Coast Titans skipper Fa'asuamaleaui. The clash in Perth on Wednesday will be Munster's 20th Origin appearance for Queensland, having won the Wally Lewis Medal as player of the series in 2020. ABC to discontinue Q+A after panel show's 18 years on air

The ABC will discontinue its weekly panel show Q+A after 18 years, the public broadcaster has announced. The show, hosted by Patricia Karvelas since 2023, will not return after its hiatus, which started last month. The ABC's news director, Justin Stevens, said Q+A had made a huge contribution to the national public discussion. "We're very proud of Q+A's great achievements over the years. The team has done a terrific job, including a strong performance during the federal election campaign," he said. "Discontinuing the program at this point is no reflection on anyone on the show. "We always need to keep innovating and renewing and, in the two decades since Q+A began, the world has changed. "It's time to rethink how audiences want to interact and to evolve how we can engage with the public to include as many Australians as possible in national conversations. "We'll be working on how we can continue to foster engagement of this nature in an innovative way." Karvelas will continue hosting Afternoon Briefing and the popular Politics Now podcast along with writing her column for the ABC News website. "Patricia also recently reported for Four Corners, and we've now asked her to do more for Four Corners as time permits," Stevens said. The Q+A proposal would result in some redundancies, Stevens told ABC staff in an email. The ABC also announced it would invest in producing more news documentaries, with a new position of executive producer, documentaries and specials to be advertised soon. It will also make the Your Say project — launched during the recent federal election — a permanent initiative to drive audience engagement in communities around the country. "Your Say ensures we have a strong framework for putting the public's views, concerns and questions at the heart of our journalism, complementing our daily commissioning and reporting," Stevens said. "We're keen to see what else we can do with this." Launched by founding executive producer Peter McEvoy and host Tony Jones in 2008, Q+A was an agenda-setting program that pushed politicians beyond their standard talking points. Then-prime minister Kevin Rudd appeared solo on the first episode, before the second episode introduced the regular format of five panellists, including politicians from across the spectrum and others in public life. What made it stand out from other panel shows was the role of the audience, who led the questioning in the studio or via video and social media. McEvoy said in 2019 that the audience was the show's biggest challenge and its strength. "An ordinary panel program just has to wrangle four or five guests," he said. "Q&A has to manage 300, 400 — up to a thousand audience participants — recruiting, registering, checking identities, keeping them informed, generating and choosing questions." With the audience asking the questions, the conversation could go in unexpected directions, giving a platform to people who were not being heard in other areas of public life. But not every question took the conversation forward, earning Jones's signature line, "I'll take that as a comment". When Jones left the show in 2019, Hamish Macdonald joined as host for 18 months, before resigning. He was replaced by rotating hosts David Speers, Virginia Trioli and Stan Grant, before Grant took the role on solo. Grant resigned from the program in May 2023 after sustained racist abuse and trolling, saying on his last show: "To those who have abused me and my family, I would just say — if your aim was to hurt me, well, you've succeeded." Stevens paid tribute to the many people who had worked on screen and behind the camera over the show's 18-year run. "I want to call out current executive producer Eliza Harvey and presenter Patricia Karvelas. They are hugely talented journalists who have done an outstanding job with Q+A in recent years," he said. "Many extremely talented and dedicated people have worked on Q+A, as presenters and behind the scenes. "I extend our sincerest thanks to them all, and to everyone who has contributed as audience members and panellists." Karvelas said she had immensely enjoyed being part of the program. "Spending time with the audience members who came to Q+A late on a Monday night has been the best part of this job," she said. "They have always been the reason for this show and I'm forever grateful to them for coming on national TV and having the courage to ask questions of powerful people." The news comes in the same week Channel Ten has axed its long-running nightly panel show The Project, after almost 16 years and 4,500 episodes. The show's hosts, Waleed Aly, Hamish McDonald and Sarah Harris, will leave Channel Ten after the final episode airs on Friday, June 27. The network announced a new national "news, current affairs and insights" show that will air for an hour from Sunday to Friday.

Phillips and Pearce's Hall of Fame induction reflects the long fight for women to play footy

There's a poetic tilt to the year that the AFLW will enter its 10th season, as its first former players are inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. The wider footballing community may have started to take note of the names Erin Phillips and Daisy Pearce when the women's elite competition erupted onto the scene in 2017, but the roots of their impact go far deeper and extend a lot further back than from that first ball up between Collingwood and Carlton at Princes Park. As AFLW analyst and commentator Gemma Bastiani pointed out, Pearce and Phillips represent two very different, but equally worthy versions of women in footy pre-AFLW. "Erin pursued other sports after being told no, Daisy raised the standard of the then-VWFL to force the AFL's hand," Bastiani wrote on X. The timing of the AFLW's introduction being brought forward to 2017 from 2020 meant that Pearce and Phillips got to play at the top level, but its delayed start meant we never really got to see them in their prime. After being forced away from football age 13, Phillips turned to basketball. There, she made herself known on the international stage, becoming a two-time WNBA champion, world champion, Commonwealth gold medallist and Olympic silver medallist. When the whispers came that the AFLW may be forming, she made the courageous choice to follow her first calling. She packed up her family in the US and moved back to Australia for the competition's first iteration in 2017. Externally, she brought gravitas, excitement and, importantly, eyeballs to the competition. Internally leadership and belief in what they were building. She left the game as the most decorated elite women's football player to date: a three-time premiership player, two-time league best and fairest, three-time All Australian, two-time grand final best on ground and two-time club champion. Pearce, on the other hand, carried the weight of being the face of the newly formed AFLW. In 2013, when women's football pioneers were pushing for a professional competition, Pearce was taken by Melbourne with the first pick in the inaugural national women's draft for the first women's exhibition game. She then became a marquee signing for Melbourne and entered the competition a 10-time VWFL/VFLW premiership player with Darebin, where she was captain between 2008 and 2016. In her Hall of Fame speech, Pearce said she carried a weight in those early days of feeling like they had to put on a good spectacle, kick enough goals, gaining enough attention, as the future of women's footy was riding on their shoulders. Pearce ended her speech honouring the ones that came before her, the pioneers who never got to play at the top level. The likes of Debbie Lee, Peta Searle and Jan Cooper. Highlighted in both stories on the night was that they used to run around with the boys as kids, as there were no girl teams for them to play in growing up. "I never wanted to be a boy," Phillips said in her speech. "I just wanted the opportunities that boys had, and that was footy." This is a common story within the first generation of AFLW players, who came from all corners across the country to fight for the right to play and grow the game they love, in the face of fierce adversity and constant pushback. Without those trailblazers, spearhead by Phillips and Pearce, we would not have a 10th season to enter into this year. Now, almost 600,000 women and girls participate in Australian Rules footy across the country.
