2025 Emmy predictions: best comedy actress
Reigning champ and winner for each of 'Hacks'' previous three seasons, Jean Smart is the favorite here, with Natasha Lyonne, star, executive producer and occasional writer and director of 'Poker Face,' joining her as the only other performer named on every ballot in Round 1.
'I'd love to see if Natasha Lyonne can really compete this year with Smart and [Quinta] Brunson,' says Trey Mangum. 'But also, Ayo Edebiri may continue to be an awards darling and stun them all.' Marveling at how Lyonne 'makes it look effortless,' Glenn Whipp says the multiple threat 'looks like she's having the time of her life.'
Lorraine Ali says, 'Bridget Everett, Natasha Lyonne and Uzo Aduba all deliver fantastic and nuanced performances as eccentric outsiders and in roles that capitalize on their unconventional appeal.' Tracy Brown writes that Kathryn Hahn's selfish witch on 'Agatha All Along' 'is pretty much everything society tells you women aren't supposed to be, but you can feel Hahn having a blast, playing her.'
Predicting it will again be Smart's time to shine, Matt Roush declares, 'In the spirit of 'It's an honor to be nominated,' let's hope Bridget Everett receives that honor for her poignant, soul-baring realism.'
And while Kristen Baldwin expects the final season of 'What We Do in the Shadows' to get a series nom, 'It still hurts that Natasia Demetriou [hasn't been] nominated for her consistently batty (sorry) performance as the enterprising vampire Nadja of Antipaxos.'

Olivia Metzger, the independent agent who represents Craig Melvin and Kristen Welker, among others, is no longer running solo. After leaving CAA in 2017 and building her own agency to represent news anchors and producers, Metzger is selling her OManagement to 3 Arts Entertainment, the production house that has been involved in series ranging from 'King of the Hill' to 'Hacks,' and has built alliances with Mike Judge and Tina Fey, among others. The move highlights a growing trend of news personalities taking on a wider halo in the entertainment business, particularly as established anchors ranging from Don Lemon to Jim Acosta and Chuck Todd move into independent streaming-video venues and digital newsletters. Fox Corp. in February acquired Red Seat Ventures, a production outlet that helps manage business aspects of independent news and opinion personalities including Bill O'Reilly, Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly. ‘The Studio' and ‘Hacks' Are Two of the Best Shows Ever About Hollywood — But Are They Too Inside or PTSD-Inducing?
Hollywood seems to always take that cliché 'write what you know' to heart when it comes to producing scripts about Hollywood. I enjoy those tales, of course, but that's because my chosen profession is to report on this fascinating business. There's clearly enough money, creativity, mystery, farce, scandal, glamour and spectacle for us to cover every single day at Variety. And all of the stuff that makes for good copy also makes for entertaining TV and film plot lines. So perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that three of this year's biggest Emmy comedy contenders play in that space: 'Hacks,' 'The Studio' and 'Only Murders in the Building.' All three have quite a bit of fun with industry tropes, and come a little too close for comfort with some of its satire. And they even crash into each other: 'Hacks' creators Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky and Paul W. Downs cameo as themselves on an episode of 'The Studio,' while Ron Howard is among this year's hot TV trends, playing himself on both 'The Studio' and 'Only Murders.' Sometimes, yes. The entertainment business as a series setting goes back to the early days of TV, as even 'I Love Lucy' had a bit of showbiz as its backdrop. Then came 'The Dick Van Dyke Show,' a TV show about the making of a TV show that won the outstanding comedy Emmy three times. HBO built an entire network partly on the premise of shows about show biz — 'The Larry Sanders Show,' 'Entourage,' 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' 'The Comeback.' (I'm not including 'The Idol' there, for obvious reasons.) One of Netflix's best early shows was the animated 'BoJack Horseman.' But just as often, it seems like shows about the biz nail it with critics and awards, but audiences are less interested. In TV circles, we still talk about Fox's groundbreaking 1999 comedy 'Action,' about a nasty Hollywood producer played by Jay Mohr, but it was canceled after eight episodes. They added a laugh track to ABC's 'Sports Night' in a desperate attempt to make it work. NBC's '30 Rock' won three consecutive comedy Emmys and is beloved by many — yet was never a megahit. Comedy Central and HBO Max gave us three fantastic seasons of 'The Other Two,' but I'm still angry at all of you who didn't watch. I think audiences are watching 'Hacks' (especially this season as Deborah Vance tackles talk), 'The Studio' (the best biz parody in years) and 'Only Murders' (which addressed Hollywood this season) because they're just damn good. But in the industry, they're elevated because we feel a special kinship with them — and that's OK. I'm hearing from a lot of execs in the business who bristle at 'The Studio' because some of its cringe is a little too close to home. I decided to do an experiment on LinkedIn and ask other industry folk whether these shows give them PTSD. I was delighted to learn that, for the most part, it's a no, that they enjoy seeing the satire. 'It's fun for this 10-year Warner Bros. vet to get more glimpses of that classic old lot,' one exec says of 'Hacks.' Former CBS research exec Eric Steinberg says he sees 'lots of relatable moments in 'Hacks' now that the main character has her own show. It will be no surprise to you that I found the audience research episode particularly fun. And, the exteriors at TV City bring back lots of memories. PTSD? Hardly!' Communications exec Stacey Luchs adds, 'There are moments that really hit home — the kind of thing people outside the entertainment world probably wouldn't believe. Sometimes it feels like I'm in on an inside joke, and it just makes me smile.' My former (and longtime) Variety colleague Steve Gaydos perhaps says it best: 'The writers of 'Hacks' and 'The Studio' have been reading our mail. But Billy Wilder turned it into art 75 years ago with 'Sunset Boulevard.' He didn't just shoot fish in a barrel. His fish had souls, and their fates mattered — then and just as much now, on stage with music and on screens of all sizes in black and white. That's the ultimate achievement and though these current TV shows contain moments of pathos, it will take time before we can measure their memorability.' Alexis Bledel Withdraws From Emmy Race for ‘The Handmaid's Tale' Due to New Guest Actor Rules (EXCLUSIVE)
Alexis Bledel has withdrawn herself from Emmy consideration for 'The Handmaid's Tale' following rule changes to the guest acting categories. Bledel, who plays Dr. Emily Malek/Ofglen in the Hulu drama, had been submitted for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for her appearance in the series finale, '610 – The Handmaid's Tale.' However, due to a newly enforced Emmy rule disqualifying actors previously nominated in a lead or supporting category for the same show, the Television Academy notified Bledel and her team that she would be moved to the supporting actress race. As a result, she opted to withdraw her name from consideration and will not appear on the nomination ballot when voting begins on June 12. In 2018, after appearing in seven of 13 episodes that season, she was deemed ineligible as a guest and was nominated instead in the supporting drama actress category. That's sole supporting drama actress nom has made her ineligible to compete in guest. The updated policy has sparked confusion and criticism across the industry. Meryl Streep, for example, will be ineligible for guest actress consideration for her role in Hulu's 'Only Murders in the Building,' despite appearing in just four of the 10 episodes. She will now compete in the supporting comedy actress category. Meanwhile, Paul Rudd was nearly eligible for guest actor in the same series but appeared in one episode too many. Rudd plays two different characters across Seasons 3 and 4: Ben Glenroy, a murdered Hollywood actor, and Glen Stubbins, his Irish-born former stunt double, used as a comedic twist in the upcoming season. A supporting drama actress awards run for her sole episode appearance would put her against her 'Handmaid's Tale' co-stars, in addition to multiple women from 'Andor,' 'Severance' and 'The White Lotus.' Despite Bledel's withdrawal, 'The Handmaid's Tale' still has 35 entries across both the Primetime and Creative Arts Emmy categories. Notable acting submissions include Elisabeth Moss for lead actress and for directing the penultimate episode, 'Execution.' Supporting actor submissions include Bradley Whitford, Max Minghella, and O-T Fagbenle, while Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley and Ann Dowd are entered in the supporting actress category. With Bledel out of the guest actress category, Hulu still has Emmy winner Cherry Jones for episode '602' and D'Arcy Carden for episode '608.' Since its debut, 'The Handmaid's Tale' has earned 76 Emmy nominations and 15 wins, including the historic outstanding drama series win in its first season, the first ever for a streaming platform.
