Calderwood returns to Northampton as technical director
Former Northampton Town boss Colin Calderwood has returned to Sixfields as the club's technical director.The former Scotland defender will work alongside manager Kevin Nolan, who was appointed in December on a two-and-a-half-year contract.Calderwood, 60, was most recently first-team coach at Southampton, helping them win promotion to the Premier League last season, but left that role earlier this month."Colin needs no introduction to supporters, his vast knowledge, experience and contacts are a huge asset and he has worked with Kevin Nolan before, when both were at Newcastle United," Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas said. "Colin's focus initially will be as part of the coaching staff, on the training ground on a day to day basis, but moving forward in the medium term he will begin to step away from the day to day to head up all of the club's footballing operations, including overseeing the recruitment work."Northampton gave Calderwood his first job in management in 2003 and he led them to promotion from League Two in 2006 before leaving for Nottingham Forest.He later had spells in charge of Scottish club Hibernian and Cambridge United, before his first return to Northampton as assistant manager under Jon Brady in the summer of 2021.Nolan described his new role at the club as a "perfect appointment".And Calderwood said: "My overriding priority is to support Kevin Nolan at all times and that is very important. "I know Kevin well, I have been really impressed with him both as a person and a manager and he is someone who has been on a really good learning curve as a coach and a manager at different levels of the game. "I feel I can help with the club's progress in the short, medium and longer term."Northampton go into Tuesday's game at Bolton Wanderers 20th in League One, but six points above the relegation places.They held promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers to a goalless draw on Saturday.

On Friday, Liverpool tabled an offer to Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz of £113million, which was a base £100m with the rest coming in add-ons. That was rejected as the German club are asking for £126m – though the Reds are unprepared to go quite that far. But sources in Germany say Leverkusen are now ready for what will likely be a final, written offer from Liverpool that could total £118m when factoring in bonuses and add-ons. At this stage the clubs are discussing the details of the deal in terms of the bonuses and Leverkusen are said to want an increase in add-ons whether achievable or not. All parties are confident a deal can be struck as Wirtz is said to be desperate for the move and Leverkusen are not planning to stand in his way – if they are remunerated in a fair way. Meanwhile, Liverpool are hoping to step up their pursuit of Bournemouth left back Milos Kerkez in the coming days. The Cherries remain insistent on their £45m valuation but Reds transfer chief Richard Hughes, once of Bournemouth, will try to negotiate that down. After the Wirtz and Kerkez deals are wrapped up, the Premier League champions will look to balance the books. Federico Chiesa is weighing up a return to Italy after barely featuring for Liverpool since his switch from Juventus last August. Sales of Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott and Kostas Tsimikas could also happen, though nothing is advanced yet.

A total of 63 per cent of respondents said they did not support VAR in Scottish football while 60 per cent said the use of the video technology had made their experience as a supporter 'significantly worse'. A Well Society statement read: 'Fans spoke about long delays, a lack of clear communication, inconsistent decisions, and a growing sense of disconnect between those in the stands and those officiating on the pitch. 'Some still see potential for technology to play a role in football, if used in the right way. But the overwhelming feeling from our fan base is that VAR, as it stands in Scotland, is simply not working. A system designed to bring clarity has, for many, only added more confusion.' The use of video technology to aid match officials was brought into the William Hill Premiership in October 2022 and a number of managers have expressed their frustration over its implementation since then. Well Society director David Cullinan added: 'As a fan-owned club, we have a duty to listen. This wasn't about grabbing attention. It was about listening to what our supporters really think. And they've made it clear that VAR, as things stand, is letting them down. 'The Society will be taking their views on board and working on a plan of action, which we'll share with members in due course. 'This is just the start of a wider discussion, and we're calling on clubs across Scotland to stand with their supporters and be part of it.'

Wales boss Bellamy wasted no time in outlining his Brussels battle plan after beating Liechtenstein made it seven points from nine in World Cup qualifying. 'We go there and I'm not camping,' Bellamy said. 'I'm not sitting back. It's not in my make-up. I can't do it.' These were bold words from Bellamy, who knows Belgium present the acid test of his Wales reign. Harry Wilson was very much a boy when making his Wales debut in Belgium 12 years ago. At the age of 16 years and 207 days he became Wales' youngest-ever player – a record he still holds to this day. A dozen years on and Wilson is now Wales' main man, his second-half header against Liechtenstein his fifth goal in seven games since Bellamy took charge. The only sour note of the Liechtenstein win was the early loss of Neco Williams to injury. The Nottingham Forest full-back, one of the few Premier League regulars in the Wales squad, has been a stand-out player under Bellamy and will be a real miss in Brussels. Jay Dasilva replaced Williams on Friday and set up Wilson's goal with a fine cross, but Ben Davies could revert to left-back in Brussels with Chris Mepham partnering Joe Rodon at the heart of the defence. Bellamy coached Jeremy Doku during his time as Anderlecht Under-21 coach and admits the Manchester City winger was 'difficult' to work with. But Bellamy said Doku's drive was 'insane' and that he helped him become a better coach. Doku has reached the Premier League via Rennes and could now return to haunt Bellamy on the international stage. The FIFA world rankings would have it that Belgium are the eighth best team in the world. But Belgium, who once topped the rankings, have only one win in eight games and began their World Cup campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw in North Macedonia on Friday. Former Lyon boss Rudi Garcia was perhaps a curious choice to take over as head coach in January, and only a few ageing members of the so-called 'Golden Generation' such as Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku remain.
