Business Secretary meeting Lotus after reports of plans to scrap UK carmaking
After reports that Chinese owner Geely was planning to stop manufacturing at the Hethel plant in Norfolk, putting 1,300 jobs at risk, Lotus issued a statement saying it had 'no plans' to close the factory.
Jonathan Reynolds will speak to the company on Sunday, the PA news agency understands.
The British sportscar brand has been majority-owned by Chinese multinational Geely since 2017.
The Financial Times had reported it was considering shutting up shop in the UK and in favour of a new plant in the US.
On Saturday, Lotus sought to assuage concerns with a statement that it remains 'committed' to the UK, which it called its largest commercial market in Europe and the 'heart' of the brand.
'Lotus Cars is continuing normal operations, and there are no plans to close the factory,' it said.
'We are actively exploring strategic options to enhance efficiency and ensure global competitiveness in the evolving market.
'We have invested significantly in R&D and operations in the UK, over the past six years. Lotus remains committed to the UK, and its customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, as well as its proud British heritage.'
A Government spokesperson said: 'The Government does not comment on speculation or the commercial affairs of private companies.'

'Very wealthy group of people' poised to buy TikTok, Trump says
US President Donald Trump has said a "very wealthy group of people" have agreed to buy social media app TikTok from its Chinese owners. Hinting at a deal which could safeguard the future of the app, Trump said specific details on the buyer will be revealed in two weeks and offered little further detail. He said: 'We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way. I think I'll need, probably, China approval, and I think President Xi will probably do it.' Earlier in June, Trump signed an executive order to keep TikTok running in the US for a further 90 days, while his administration worked to make a deal to bring the app under American ownership. It marked the third deadline extension, and came after the Supreme Court upheld a law banning TikTok in January - causing the platform to breifly go dark. TikTok is owned by Bytedance, and boasts around 170 million users in the US. The Supreme Court said the ban was necessary to deal with the "well-supported national security concerns regarding TikTok's data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary'. The US is concerned vast swathes of user data, including sensitive information on viewing habits could be obtained by the Chinese government. Officials have also warned the algorithm that fuels what users see on the app is vulnerable to manipulation by Chinese authorities, who can use it to shape content on the platform in a way that's difficult to detect. TikTok, which sued the government last year over the law, has long denied it could be used as a tool of Beijing.

Monmouthshire council will lobby for Magor walkway station
The UK Government announced in its comprehensive spending review it would make £445 million available, with most of the money to be spent within the next three years, for rail upgrades in Wales. The Welsh Government intends pressing ahead with five new stops between Cardiff and Chepstow to ease congestion on the M4. Monmouthshire County Council agreed at its July meeting it would write to decision makers in the Cardiff and Westminster governments, and the rail industry, to 'ensure that Magor Station is recognised as a quick win and is delivered immediately and without delay' with the funding announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves. Magor West independent councillor Frances Taylor, who put the motion asking for the council's to once again commit to the village 'walkway' station, intended to be accessed on foot rather than by car, said she was glad when plans for an M4 relief road were dropped. But she said Magor station could have been delivered at any time since the Burns report, that considered alternatives, was published in early 2021 and said she couldn't see any of its recommendations have been implemented. 'Critically Magor station does not need to wait for relief line enhancements it could be delivered tomorrow for circa £10m,' said Cllr Taylor who added two hourly trains, from Cardiff, to Taunton and Cheltenham could service it. READ MORE: 'Magor should be priority of five new stations near Newport' The councillor said the five stations require improvements to the relief line, which carries freight, and she said that work hasn't been included in the £445m announced in the spending review. Cllr Catrin Maby, the council's Labour cabinet member with responsibility for transport, said while the walkway station as first proposed by local campaigners, in 2013, isn't reliant on upgrading the relief line that would likely be required for it to be 'fully functional' with the others proposed and to accommodate freight, fast trains passing through and stopping trains. The Drybridge councillor said the relief line upgrade is 'on the radar' of Westminster's Department of Transport, which is providing the funding. Labour member for Magor East with Undy John Crook said the council should focus on working with MP Catherine Fookes to lobby the government in London. An amendment put forward by Cllr Maby, who said she 'didn't disagree with the motion', suggested 'clarifying' timing of the relief line, but that was rejected by Cllr Taylor who said: 'It is not about clarifying the timescale, there is no timescale to the relief line upgrade.' The amendment was rejected by one vote and Labour councillor Armand Watts said he couldn't vote due to a technical problem. Cllr Maby also said the council is committed to other recommendations to ease M4 congestion including a Rogiet relief road which could also make travel to the Severn Tunnel Junction station easier.

Lando Norris eager for British Grand Prix after closing title gap to 15 points
Norris will head to his home race at Silverstone in a week's time a driver reborn after he came out on top of his thrilling wheel-to-wheel duel with McLaren team-mate Piastri in the Styrian mountains. After claiming the third win of his stop-start campaign, the Englishman has reduced the title deficit to Piastri to 15 points from 22. Max Verstappen is now 61 points off the title pace after he was taken out on the opening lap by Mercedes' teenager Kimi Antonelli. A crowd touching 150,000 is expected at Silverstone next weekend, while Norris will also have a dedicated area for his fans, the Landostand, at Stowe corner. But Norris said: 'For me, it is not more pressure. Of course, it is the place I want to win more than anywhere else. It puts a smile on my face when I wake up there every day, and it distracts me in a good way. 'There is pressure in every race and I cannot put myself under any more pressure than I do. So, it is something to look forward to, to enjoy every lap, enjoy the experience, and to have so many of my fans in my own grandstand cheering me on. Norris' championship hopes were in tatters after the Canadian Grand Prix a fortnight ago following a collision with Piastri which the British driver said made him look like a fool. 'It is certainly fulfilling for me and it gives me good confidence,' continued Norris, 25. 'I don't need to prove anything to anyone, only to me. It has been a good clean weekend. I have performed exactly as I wanted to do and needed to. 'But it doesn't come easily. I have not just turned up and things are better. I am working and doing a lot more away from the track than I used to with the team, on the simulator, and my own team in trying to improve everything I can. It is positive to see that paying off immediately. And it is a good step in the right direction. But I still want more and still need more so we will keep working.' Norris and Piastri traded places on lap 11 as they fought for the lead before the latter came within centimetres of crashing into his team-mate nine laps later when his lunge at turn four almost backfired. It is something I wish didn't happen but it was nice we could push to the limit here. There were some close moments but nothing that would make (team principal) Andrea (Stella) or the pit wall sweat too much.'
