FIANZ Condemns Genocidal Killing Of Palestinians In Gaza, Calls On NZ Govt To Uphold ICJ Ruling And End Complicity
Wellington, New Zealand — The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) strongly condemns the ongoing genocidal actions perpetrated against the Palestinian people in Gaza. We mourn the devastating loss of life and the unprecedented destruction inflicted upon a besieged civilian population, including thousands of women and children who have been killed, maimed, or made homeless.
The scale and nature of the violence—marked by indiscriminate bombings and systematic targeting of health workers, aid workers, hospitals and refugee camps, and the blockade of food, water, medicine and other essential humanitarian supplies—amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity. These actions constitute a blatant violation of international law and the most basic principles of human decency said Ibrar Sheik, President of FIANZ.
We call on the New Zealand Government to honour and support the recent ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) which found a plausible case of genocide committed by the Israeli regime against Palestinians in Gaza. As a signatory to the Genocide Convention and a long-standing advocate for human rights, New Zealand must now act decisively and with integrity.
We urge that the New Zealand Government:
Cease all diplomatic, trade and technological cooperation with the Zionist regime of Israel until it ends its occupation, lifts the siege on Gaza, and complies fully with international law.
Support international efforts to deliver immediate and unhindered humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, and to hold those responsible for war crimes accountable.
Join the growing global call for a permanent ceasefire and the recognition of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination, freedom, and return.
Accelerate its efforts towards establishing Palestinian state as the part of two state solution.
As New Zealanders, we believe in justice, compassion, and standing on the right side of history. Silence in the face of genocide is complicity. FIANZ joins the voices of conscience—locally and globally—in standing with the people of Palestine' said Anwar Ghani, Chair of National and International Relations of FIANZ.
We urge all New Zealanders, civil society organisations, and faith communities to raise their voices, demand accountability, and advocate for peace rooted in justice.

Tuesday, 10 June 2025, 7:13 pm Article: RNZ Morning Report Chris Hipkins says Te Pāti Māori needs to focus on important issues such as jobs, health and homes, like Labour is, keeping the door open to working with them despite three of their MPs being suspended from Parliament. Labour Māori development spokesperson Willie Jackson told Te Pāti Māori not every Māori supported them after three of its MPs disrupted a vote on the Treaty Principles Bill last year with a haka. The party could have responded differently after the three representatives - co-leaders Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi, and first-term MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke - were referred to the Privileges Committee, and suspended, Jackson said last week. "They love you, I love you, but some of the stuff is not going down well," Jackson said. Labour Party said last month while it agreed the actions met the criteria of contempt, it was concerned that the penalties were "unduly severe". Labour's own Peeni Henare took part in the haka, but was not suspended after apologising. Hipkins told Morning Report on Monday the feedback he was getting from around the country was that Māori wanted to see Labour focused on the issues that bring New Zealanders together and lead the country forward. "That includes focusing on things like jobs, health, homes, the sorts of things that New Zealanders all want to see their government focused on." He said while his party worked in co-operation with Te Pāti Māori, they were also in competition for votes. "We have previously held all the Māori electorates, we'd like to do so again. We're gonna, you know, we're gonna go out there and contest those vigorously at the next election, but we can also work together on areas where we have common ground." The most recent RNZ-Reid Research poll found Labour could lead the next government, but it would need both the Greens and Te Pāti Māori. Hipkins said Labour would look to have a similar relationship with Te Pāti Māori as it had with the Green Party and "set out clear parameters for a working relationship". "I think that's one of the things that Christopher Luxon hasn't done with ACT and with New Zealand First to say, 'Look, these are the areas where we think we can work together. These are the areas where we're not willing to compromise.' "And, you know, I think that includes setting clear standards of expectation around ministerial behaviour - so anyone who's going to be a minister in any government that I lead will be expected to behave like a minister, and that doesn't vary by party. "So unlike Christopher Luxon who seems to think that Winston Peters and David Seymour are subject to different rules to everybody else; I think all ministers should be subjected to the same rules." Hipkins rejected a suggestion that Jackson was appeasing pākeha with his comments. "Ultimately, if you want to be part of the government, then you need to follow the rules of the government." Asked how Labour could work with a party whose MPs broke those rules, Hipkins said it was "ultimately" down to voters. "We're going to be going out there competing vigorously for every vote we can get for Labour. If people believe in the sorts of things that the Labour Party believes in, they want to see a government that's focused on core areas like jobs, health, and homes, then they need to vote for Labour in order to achieve that." Hipkins said he would prefer to have an "environment where the government of the day, whomever that was, always had a majority". "That would be great, but that's not the reality. That's not what New Zealand voters have chosen for our electoral system. They've chosen a system in which we have to work with other political parties. "I think unlike the current government though, I'll be clear that, you know, there are some areas where, we, we will have standards and everybody will have to follow them." © Scoop Media

Press Release – ACT New Zealand Patterns of abusive behaviour deserve to be recognised by the law, and these changes will help victims seek justice, ACT MP Laura McClure. ACT MP Laura McClure is welcoming changes made at select committee to strengthen the proposed anti-stalking law, but says more must be done to protect New Zealanders from modern forms of digital abuse, particularly sexually explicit deepfakes. 'I'm pleased to see the Government respond to public concern about stalking with more robust and practical legislation,' says McClure. 'Patterns of abusive behaviour deserve to be recognised by the law, and these changes will help victims seek justice. 'But we can't stop here. As technology evolves, so do the tools of harassment and abuse. Sexually explicit AI-generated deepfakes made without consent are a fast-growing threat, especially to young people and women. 'I have a members' bill in the ballot that would create a specific offence for the creation and distribution of non-consensual sexually explicit deepfake content. This should be adopted as a Government Bill. 'Deepfakes are harming real people today, and the law is failing to keep up. 'The same commitment to protecting stalking victims should extend to those targeted by synthetic sexual abuse. We need clear, targeted laws so police can act, courts can prosecute, and victims can get justice.'

Government Rightfully Sued Over Illegal Climate ‘Plan'
Press Release – Green Party Christopher Luxon has spent the better part of two years telling the country everything is fine while he dismantles effective climate policy, gives handouts to the fossil fuel sector and platforms lobbyists pseudoscience on agricultural emissions. Last week, world-leading climate scientists called out the Government's approach to agricultural emissions. This week, climate lawyers have sued the Government because its Emissions Reductions Plans do not add up. 'Luxon's Government has chosen to pour oil, coal and gas on the climate crisis fire. Their climate 'plan' is not worth the paper it is written on. That's why they're being sued today,' says the Green Party's co-leader and spokesperson for climate change, Chlöe Swarbrick. 'I called it a demonstrable lie when the Prime Minister told Parliament in December 2023 that he wasn't weakening actions on climate – while he was actively weakening actions on climate. It was and remains a demonstrable lie. This is the first leg of the legal case. 'The Luxon Government's second Emissions Reduction Plan relies on unproven, economically unfeasible technologies and plastering our country in pine trees. This is the second leg of the legal case. 'Christopher Luxon has spent the better part of two years telling the country everything is fine while he dismantles effective climate policy, gives handouts to the fossil fuel sector and platforms lobbyist's pseudoscience on agricultural emissions. This would be a meme – a joke – if it wasn't so serious. 'The Greens have shown we can reduce climate-changing emissions five times faster than the Government's 'plan,' while reducing the cost of living and improving our quality of life.
