Relief for Delhi FC, SC Bengaluru as relegation from I-League stayed
New Delhi, In a major reprieve for Delhi FC and Sporting Club Bengaluru, the All India Football Federation's Appeal Committee has stayed their relegation from I-League until a final decision is reached on their submissions challenging the AIFF's disciplinary panel ruling.
The two interim orders, dated May 24 and currently in possession with PTI, revealed that both the clubs had appealed against the AIFF Disciplinary Committee's decisions that would have demoted them from the 2024–25 I-League season after they finished among the bottom two of the 12-team competition.
Chaired by Justice Rajesh Tandon, with Ashok K Tripathi and Priyanka Mishra as members, the Appeal Committee noted that the circumstances warranted keeping any relegation-related action "in abeyance" until the final hearing.
"On behalf of AIFF, time has been sought for 2 days to file the objections however, the circumstances of the case warrant that any order passed for relegation shall remain in abeyance and shall not be acted upon till the final hearing of the present appeal itself," both the orders stated.
In its appeal, Sporting Club Bengaluru argued that Namdhari FC had fielded an "ineligible player" during a match, a breach that they claim entitles them to three points.
Their advocate argued that the Disciplinary Committee overlooked crucial provisions , and that relegation has penal consequences, infringing Article 19 of the Indian Constitution .
If granted, this would also impact the standings and potentially push Aizawl FC into the relegation zone instead.
Delhi FC, meanwhile, questioned the process and rationale behind their demotion, citing AIFF's own past precedents where relegation had been waived.
Their legal counsel contended that relegation constitutes penal consequences, thereby invoking Article 19 of the Indian Constitution.
The Appeal Committee observed in both cases that the Disciplinary Committee appeared to have overlooked key aspects of the relegation process and noted the seriousness of the implications involved.
The Committee has also directed that a copy of the appeal documents be sent to Aizawl FC, allowing them the opportunity to join the proceedings if they want.
As per the official standings after the conclusion of the I-League last month, SC Bengaluru and Delhi FC took the last two spots 11th and 12th respectively in the table.
The next hearing for both the appeals is scheduled for Thursday at the AIFF office in New Delhi.

The court declined to issue interim relief, stating that it would first hear arguments from the state. KSCA, in its petition, maintained that its role was limited to renting out the stadium and facilitating government permissions. Responsibility for ticketing and crowd control, it argued, lay with RCB, the event organizer, and law enforcement authorities. 'The incident was an accident due to sudden rush,' the petition stated, 'and no intention or motive can be attributed particularly to the petitioners (KSCA) because the gate management and crowd management… was of RCB, organiser and police. The KSCA Managing Committee… does not deal with the audience and spectators or fans.' KSCA also contended that police should have conducted a preliminary inquiry before filing the FIR, and questioned the delay in registering the case.

No arrests for now: HC protects Karnataka cricket body in stampede case
In a relief for the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), the Karnataka High Court on Friday directed the state government to refrain from taking any coercive action against the cricket body in connection with the tragic stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, reported India Today. The court's directive protects the KSCA officials from arrest, following their inclusion in an FIR registered in the aftermath of the stampede, which occurred during a felicitation ceremony for IPL 2025 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on June 4. The incident claimed 11 lives and left 56 others injured as an overwhelming crowd gathered at the stadium. Justice SR Krishna Kumar, presiding over the matter, made it clear that while no immediate action should be taken against KSCA officials, they must fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. 'No precipitative be taken against management of Karnataka State Cricket Association till the next date of hearing, subject to condition that they shall cooperate with the investigation,' said Justice Kumar. The FIR, filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), names KSCA, RCB, and event management firm DNA Entertainment Private Limited as the primary organisers of the event. All three have been booked for alleged 'criminal negligence' leading to the deadly crowd surge. During the hearing, Advocate General Shashi Kiran, representing the state, stated that the police investigation will continue unhindered and assured the court that no arrests will be made for the time being. However, the petitioner's lawyer pointed out that one of the accused, the marketing head of RCB, had already been taken into custody. The AG confirmed the arrest, saying, 'One accused was arrested at an airport. He was trying to escape. He was going to Dubai.' In an earlier statement, KSCA had distanced itself from the logistical lapses at the event, placing the blame on the state government, RCB, and DNA Entertainment for the mismanagement that allegedly led to the tragedy.

Blue Tigers take lessons from Thailand result, set sights on Hong Kong
Pathum Thani [Thailand] June 6 (ANI): India's 0-2 loss against Thailand was somewhat of a bitter pill to swallow for the Blue Tigers at the Thammasat Stadium on Wednesday. The show, however, must go on. Regardless of the result against Thailand, the Blue Tigers now shift their focus to the task at hand in their AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 Final Round Qualifier against Hong Kong, China, on June 10, according to the AIFF website. The senior India men's national team, who had travelled to Thailand with a 28-member squad, will now shift base to Hong Kong five days prior to their Asian qualifier with a 25-man squad, sans goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari, centre-back Mehtab Singh, and full-back Subhasish Bose, who will travel back to India directly from Thailand. Bose was ruled out of the match against Thailand as well due to an injury. Looking back at the match against Thailand, India head coach Manolo Marquez stressed the importance of capitalising on the opportunities that the team creates. 'The reality is that when you don't score, especially the clear chances that we had, usually you lose the game,' said Marquez. 'Thailand have very good players, and if you don't take your chances against them, it will be difficult.' Five days to go for their Asian qualifier against Hong Kong, Marquez is now looking ahead to making last-minute adjustments before the Blue Tigers take the field.
