BBC News09-03-2025

A retired Essex Police dog who was hit by a car won an award at Crufts 2025. Baloo was given The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award after almost 120,000 votes were cast.In 2018, while on duty, the Belgian Malinois was hit by a suspect's car fleeing a crime scene, and one of her legs was amputated. When recovered, she visited officers to help with their wellbeing and inspired the launch of a trauma support service.Owner Mandy Chapman, who is a retired police dog handler, said: "She is an amazing dog through and through. Despite her disability and the terrible injuries she sustained, she has come through it all so well and finds joy in life, as well as giving joy in life, every single day."
The award was announced at the bp pulse LIVE arena, at the NEC in Birmingham, on the final day of Crufts, by campaigner Josephine Hamilton OBE and Paralympian, Ellie Simmonds OBE.Proud Mandy and Baloo, eight, were presented with their award and a cheque for £5,000 for their dog charity of choice – Essex Retired Police Dog Fund.
Baloo and Mandy worked with the College of Policing team to set up 'Oscar Kilo' wellbeing and trauma support dogs service. Now there are more than 250 canines involved with the scheme. They also visited schools, care homes and community groups to help mental health."You can see the difference she makes to people when she goes to see them," Mandy said."She proves that however hard things get, you can get through it. She is super soppy and sharing her is so rewarding, I love every second of it."Speaking about the win she added: "I can see why this competition goes to public vote, because who on earth could choose, but thank you to each and every person who has voted for her."Helen Kerfoot, Crufts show manager, said: "What Baloo has achieved, the courage she has shown, and the support she now gives others is extraordinary. "Mandy and Baloo's incredible bond and the work they do together is inspiring."

This 70% question eliminated 11 people altogether in the ITV game show. 5 Could you answer this question on The 1% Club? Credit: ITV 5 Lee Mack was shocked by one player's logic Credit: ITV 5 She went on to explain the reasoning behind her choice Credit: ITV Lee Mack had asked the remaining contestants: "Based on the results shown here, which of these sports teams is the best?" The screen showed various final game scores for a selection of fictional teams. Available options included A) Breezers, B) All Stars, C) Flames or D) Gems. Once the 30 second time limit was up, it was revealed 11 people had chosen the wrong team. The correct answer was Breezers, who had successfully won all of their games. Lee then proceeded to turn his attention to eliminated player Zainab. Having asked what she answered, the contestant replied: "I put All Stars. "I didn't even look at the numbers. I just thought, 'Oh, All Stars. They just seem like the best name.'" Lee responded: "Whoa, you didn't just go with what you thought was the best name?" As she nodded to confirm, Lee asked: "What did you think all the numbers were for?" The 1% Club player brands herself 'thick' as she gets easy picture question wrong - but would you have made the same mistake? Zainab explained: "I don't know - I don't watch football or anything like that." To which Lee remarked: "They're not real teams! And it's not even football, it says sport." In another episode, a contestant branded herself "thick" after getting an easy picture question wrong. The players had been asked: "Which of these Vincent van Gogh self-portraits has been altered?" Players had just 30 seconds to examine three photos of the famous painter and pick out the correct answer. The answer turned out to be C - as this featured the legendary Dutch artist wearing earbuds, which weren't invented for another 100-years after his death in 1890. The faked image also played on the fact Van Gogh infamously also cut off one of his ears during a furious row with artist Paul Gaugin. After revealing four people got it wrong, Lee turned his attention to one of these players - Margaret. "Thick as two short planks", Margaret quipped after the spotlight was put on her. The contestant revealed she'd initially chosen C as her answer - only to change her mind. When asked by Lee for her reasons behind changing, Margaret replied: "God alone knows, I don't." EXCLUSIVE Watch Diane Morgan take BRUTAL swipe at Who Do You Think You Are producers in BBC first

Diane Morgan takes a catty swipe at the Who Do You Think You Are producers in the next episode of the BBC show. Tuesday's instalment of the programme will see the comedian and actress, 49, explore her father's side of the family after he passed away six years ago. In an exclusive first look obtained by MailOnline, Diane certainly shows off her funny side as she chats to the camera about taking part in the programme, and brings up some of her work that has poked fun at the series. Sitting on a brown leather sofa, she cheekily says: 'This is what I can't understand about any of those shows, like this one, where people go on a journey, you know, you'd think people would stop using those tropes. 'Even the tiny little things like walking past the camera...' A number of shots of her doing exactly that then play out. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. She continues: 'I wonder how much wondering aimlessly I'll be doing in this...' Back at the sofa, Diane says: 'So I wrote this comedy called Mandy, about this woman who can't hold a job down, in one episode she goes on Who Are You, Do You Think?... 'Loosely based on Who Do You Think You Are.' As the actress bursts into laughter, a scene from the programme appears, Diane's character Mandy can be seen in a jacuzzi Deborah Meaden. She continues to say: 'But I never thought in a million years, I thought you'd ask me to be on it.' The clip ends with the star taking her pooch for a walk. Diane tells her dog: 'Come on Bob. Bob, we're going to go to the park! You love the park!' As Bob refuses to move, Diane says: 'I knew he'd steal this. Come on Bob! 'Bob. Come on Bob.' She later picks him up and confesses: 'He's just very headstrong...' Back in March the Beeb confirmed the return of Who Do You Think You Are? with a Strictly star, soap legend and Hollywood icon in the new celeb-filled series. The genealogy show, which follows famous faces as they find out about their family tree, hit our screens on the Beeb in 2004 and has had 177 episodes over 20 seasons. The likes of Andrew Garfield, Diane Morgan, Mushal Husian, Ross Kemp, Aisling Bea, Will Young, Fred Siriex and Layton Williams explore their family history. Last week singer Will made a shocking discovery that he's related to King Edward I. Will learnt that Edward I is his 20 times great grandfather, with the monarch ruling from 1272 to 1307. After discovering the royal link, Will says: 'No? Edward the First! No? You are joking? You have made it up. That's unbelievable. This is just amazing. 'I cannot believe it. It is wonderful. Being related to a king, will it change my behaviour? I mean the short answer is Yes. 'What you are beholding is essentially a future despot. You see Mr Nice Guy. Now get ready for Mr Nasty.'

One contestant was left feeling slightly embarrassed after slipping up on a relatively straightforward picture question. It asked: "Which of these Vincent van Gogh self-portraits has been altered?" Players had just 30 seconds to examine three photos and pick out the correct answer. The answer turned out to be C - as this featured the legendary artist wearing earphones, which weren't invented in his time. After revealing four people got it wrong, Lee turned his attention to one of these players - Margaret. "Thick as two short planks", Margaret quipped after the spotlight was put on her.
