Jordan: Regent urges developing tourism sector action plan
AMMAN: HRH Crown Prince Hussein, the Regent, stressed on Monday the importance of developing an action plan for Jordan's tourism sector that ensures the sustainability of tourism activities and highlights investment opportunities.
Chairing meetings at Al Husseiniya Palace with industry stakeholders to discuss strategies to develop the tourism sector, the Crown Prince said the action plan should lay the groundwork for revitalising tourism and improving the experience of tourists, according to a Royal Court statement.
His Royal Highness also highlighted the need to invest in Jordan as a hub for medical tourism by strengthening partnerships with the private sector.
At the meetings, attended by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, the Crown Prince was briefed by Tourism Minister Lina Annab on the Ministry of Tourism's plan to develop a new five-year National Tourism Strategy that focuses on different tourism segments including developing health and wellness tourism, in addition to supporting the sector to rebound after the impact of regional instability.
Also discussed during the meetings was the progress of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority in implementing various projects, with His Royal Highness highlighting the need to find solutions to boost the PDTRA's financial resources, the statement said.
The Crown Prince commended the efforts of the Ministry of Interior and security agencies in ensuring a safe tourism experience for Jordan's visitors.

Cairo postpones opening of its Grand Museum amid regional escalation
Egypt announced on Saturday it was postponing the much-heralded opening of its $1-billion Grand Egyptian Museum that had been scheduled for July 3. A statement by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said the museum will now be formally opened on a day to be decided "at a suitable time" during the fourth quarter of this year. The ministry cited "current regional developments" - a thinly veiled reference to the Israel-Iran conflict - as the reason behind the delay. "The decision is rooted in the Egyptian state's national responsibility and its desire to present an exceptional global event in a climate that's becoming of the glory of the Egyptian civilisation and its unique legacy," said the statement. The museum, which had a partial soft opening last year, will continue to receive visitors until the formal opening date approaches, it added. The museum, the largest in the world to contain artefacts from a single civilisation, was first announced in 2002, when a foundation stone was laid at the site, two kilometres away from the Giza pyramids. Egypt is forecasting a 6 per cent annual increase in international visitors this year to reach 16.8 million travellers, despite the shadow of regional wars. It aims to further diversify its offerings and expand into adventure travel and conference meetings, among other avenues, according to Sherif Fathy, Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities. Egypt may revise its annual forecast upwards later in the year, as the first three months of 2025 showed a 25 per cent annual increase, he said. 'I hope I'm going to announce to you soon a forecast that is higher than 10 per cent, but I'll wait for the second quarter in order to be able to give a more realistic forecast for the year,' he added.

Hajj 2025: 60 caught sneaking into Makkah on foot in Saudi Arabia
Hajj security forces apprehended 60 foreign nationals holding visit visas for violating regulations, authorities said on Wednesday. The accused attempted to sneak into Makkah on foot via a desert route, the official Saudi account of Public Security said in a tweet on X. The statement also said that the accused have been referred to the competent authorities for appropriate action and levying penalties. The Kingdom's Ministry of Tourism earlier said that anyone caught transporting pilgrims without a valid Haj permit or offering accommodations to these violators in hotels, apartments, etc., will face a fine of 100,000 Saudi Riyals. This penalty applies to citizens, residents, and visitors. Those who will be caught performing the pilgrimage without a permit or attempting to do so will face a fine of up to 20,000 Saudi Riyals. The same penalty applies to visit visa holders who attempt to enter Makkah and stay there starting Tuesday, April 29 (Dhul-Qi'dah 1) and until Dhul Hijjah 14.
