Gold tops 1-month high as Middle East tensions spur safe-haven demand

NEW YORK: Gold prices climbed on Friday to their highest point in more than a month, on track for a weekly gain, as investors sought safe-haven assets after Israel's strike on Iran heightened Middle East tensions. Spot gold was up 1.3 per cent at US$3,428.28 an ounce, as of 0134 GMT, after hitting its highest level since May 7 earlier in the session. Bullion has gained more than 3.5 per cent so far this week. US gold futures gained 1.4 per cent to US$3,449.60. Geopolitical tensions escalated after Israel struck Iran as tensions mounted over US efforts to halt Iran's production of atomic bomb materials. "This latest spike in hostilities in the Middle East has taken the focus off trade negotiations for now, with investors making a play towards safe-haven assets in response," said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade. Israel declared a state of emergency, citing expected missile and drone attacks from Tehran, and the US military is preparing for various contingencies in the Middle East, including potential assistance with evacuating American civilians, a US official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. "Gold surged past resistance around the US$3400 on news of the airstrikes, and further upside could be in-store should the escalation continue," Waterer said. Signaling a cooling US labor market and subdued inflation pressures, the number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits held at an eight-month high last week, while slowing domestic demand helped to restrain producer prices in May. The data released a day after the Labor Department reported a moderate rise in consumer prices in May, bolstered expectations of an earlier rate cut. Traders are now expecting a 55-basis-point rate cut by the year-end, starting in September rather than October as previously anticipated. Elsewhere, spot silver edged down 0.1 per cent at US$36.33 per ounce, platinum fell 0.8 per cent to US$1,285.21, while palladium was steady at US$1,055.21. All three metals were headed for weekly gain.

Indonesia to cut contribution to South Korea fighter jet project

SEOUL: South Korea and Indonesia signed an agreement cutting down Indonesia's contribution in a South Korea-developed fighter jet project to about 600 billion won (US$439 million), South Korea's defence procurement agency said on Friday (June 13). South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said in a statement that DAPA and Indonesia's defence ministry officials signed an agreement this week concerning the KF-21 jet (pic) development project. Indonesia's defence ministry did not respond immediately to a request for comment. A decade ago, South Korea and Indonesia agreed to jointly develop the jet in a project worth 8.1 trillion won, with Jakarta agreeing to pay about 1.6 trillion won. However, Jakarta has since sought to renegotiate the deal, and last August Seoul decided to lower Jakarta's financial commitment to 600 billion won, as well as to make adjustments to its technology transfer plan, according to DAPA. Although the two countries agreed on the amount, additional discussions are needed on the payment deadline and the specific scope of tech transfer, Yonhap news agency said. Indonesia's defence ministry told DAPA it is undergoing administrative process to pay its remaining contribution to the KF-21 project, DAPA said. "If the contributions are paid as planned, we expect the defence cooperation between the two countries will gain momentum again," the agency said. - Reuters

India bond yields may rise ahead of auction, geopolitical risks in focus

MUMBAI: Indian government bond yields are set to rise on Friday, pressured by escalating geopolitical tensions and caution ahead of a weekly domestic debt auction, which is expected to provide cues on investor appetite. The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond is expected to move between 6.26 per cent and 6.31 per cent till the debt auction, a trader at a private bank said, compared with its previous close of 6.2798 per cent. The five-year 6.75 per cent 2029 bond yield ended at 5.9706 per cent in the previous session. New Delhi will sell bonds worth 300 billion rupees (US$3.51 billion) later in the day, including liquid seven-year papers. "The outcome of today's auction will be crucial as it will gauge investor appetite and yield expectations for future market moves," the trader said. "There could be a bearish bias after a spike in oil prices due to Middle East tensions." Oil prices jumped more than 8 per cent on Friday after Israel said it struck Iran. Iranian media said explosions were heard in Tehran, fuelling worries about disruptions in oil supplies. The benchmark Brent crude contract was up 8 per cent in Asian trading hours on Friday and was hovering around US$75 per barrel. India is a major importer of crude oil and higher prices could affect the nation's inflation outlook. However, a softer domestic inflation print may offer traders some relief. India's retail inflation slowed to 2.82 per cent in May, the lowest in more than six years, from 3.16 per cent in April, and below the 3 per cent forecast in a Reuters poll. RATES Indian overnight index swap (OIS) rates are expected to see paying pressure across the curve. The one-year OIS rate ended at 5.55 per cent, the two-year OIS rate closed at 5.51 per cent and the liquid five-year OIS finished at 5.73 per cent. KEY INDICATORS: ** Brent crude futures were 8.5 per cent higher at US$75.30 per barrel after easing 0.6 per cent in previous session ** Ten-year U.S. Treasury yield was at 4.3317 per cent; two-year yield at 3.8868 per cent ** India to sell sovereign bonds worth 300 billion rupees ** RBI to set underwriting fees for 300 billion rupees of sovereign bond auction
