KUCHING (May 27): A total of 56 new stage buses have been introduced across 10 key routes in Kuching under the State Bus Service Transformation (SBST) BAS.MY project, said Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
He was this was a major push to modernise Sarawak's public transport system, and that BAS.MY was currently servicing six routes, including the latest one to Kampung Benuk which began operations on May 22.
'Since the rollout on March 5 this year, the SBST project has recorded 34,860 passengers across five routes, namely Taman Malihah, King Centre, Bako, Bau and Serian.
'This initiative not only aims to improve accessibility to public transport in the city, but also reduce traffic congestion. Passengers can ride unlimited for just RM50 a month with the MyBas50 pass,' he said in his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday.
He noted that students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities are eligible for free rides under the programme.
As of May 13, a total of 2,175 applications for MyBas50 and concession cards were received since the initiative were introduced in March.
Lee also announced that the 14 smart stage buses that were introduced in Miri in October 2024 saw ridership reaching 455,068 in just six months, which indicates growing public confidence in the bus system.
'These buses are equipped with electronic ticketing machines that accept debit and credit cards, e-wallets and cash, and registration and reload services for the passes are available at the Kuching Open Air Market bus station,' he said.
On intercity travel, Lee said express buses remain an essential mode of transport, particularly for those commuting for work, studies or to visit family.
Based on data from Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal, he said an average of 37 express bus trips depart daily. The most popular domestic routes are to Sibu, Bintulu, Sarikei, Miri, and Sri Aman, with Sibu topping the list at 3,669 passengers or 19.3 per cent of the total 19,023 passengers last year.
Meanwhile, Pontianak remains the most popular international destination with 4,818 passengers recorded in 2024, or 25.3 per cent of outbound international travellers.
'To meet rising demand and ensure service reliability, my ministry will continue to collaborate with bus operators, relevant agencies and our counterparts in Indonesia,' he said.
He also highlighted that plans are underway to develop an integrated Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to enhance coordination, efficiency and the passenger travel experience, although it remains in the early planning stages.

KUALA LUMPUR: IOI Properties Group Bhd (IOIProp) is partnering with RHB Banking Group (RHB) to launch home and renovation loans and financing and green property loans and financing for eligible residential properties across IOIProp's property portfolio. The loans and financing will be offered through RHB's HB Full Flexi Home and Renovation Loan/Financing, as well as the RHB Green Residential Property Loan/Financing programmes. In a statement yesterday, the property developer said the partnership underscores IOIProp and RHB's dedication to supporting homeownership while streamlining the move-in experience and promoting sustainable development approaches in the country. IOIProp's head of group sales and marketing and branding, Nicole Lee Chee Yiing, said the partnership will help to smooth out the homeownership journey for buyers. 'Through RHB Full Flexi Home and Renovation Loan/Financing, homebuyers will be given access to obtain financing packages of up to 90% plus 30% loan/financing margins for selected residential properties. 'The additional 30% loan/financing margin aims to assist eligible homebuyers in covering renovation costs at attractive overall home and renovation loan/financing rates,' she said. Lee said the renovation loans/financing will be disbursed directly to the buyers in stages based on renovation progress. 'We hope that through this financial solution in partnership with RHB, we will be able to help reduce the financing burden for buyers upon vacant possession, addressing this common pain point among home seekers.' Meanwhile, IOIProp said under RHB Green Residential Property Loan/Financing, home purchasers can opt for loan/financing margins up to 95% (inclusive of entry-cost financing), with an additional 5% to finance mortgage reducing term assurance (MRTA)/mortgage reducing term takaful (MRTT) coverage. News Analysis: China's openness to multilateralism empowers Global South, counters protectionism, experts say
KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 (Xinhua) -- China's continued commitment to free and open trade, as well as balanced multilateral cooperation, is not only empowering its own economic growth but also providing a strong foundation for developing economies across the Global South amid mounting global uncertainty, according to analysts. OPEN TRADE STANCE BOLSTERING GLOBAL SOUTH China's participation in the recent ASEAN-China-GCC Summit underscores its role as an economic anchor, helping to counterbalance the harmful effects of rising protectionism and unilateral policies by certain countries, said Lee Pei May, a political expert at the International Islamic University Malaysia, in a recent interview with Xinhua. "The summit allows ASEAN, GCC, and China to align more closely with the broader Global South's interest and agenda," Lee said. "Such platforms provide opportunities to amplify their voice and also discuss new ways to cooperate amidst global uncertainty," she further explained, adding that it was also a good opportunity for the Global South to try to reshape the world order to be more inclusive and diverse. "As some countries are becoming more protectionist and isolationist, the summit was a good initiative and effort to counter these emerging trends. The summit proves that economies can complement rather than compete with one another, easing the worries that countries can only develop if they turn inward," she said, adding that such a cooperative model could serve as a successful template for other groupings with China. EXPANDING PRACTICAL COOPERATION IN DEVELOPMENT Malaysian experts also stress the importance of practical and inclusive cooperation among developing nations. The summit offers a promising platform for South-South collaboration in key sectors, especially for countries seeking alternatives to Western-dominated systems. Andrew Kam Jia Yi, a senior research fellow with the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies at the National University of Malaysia, highlighted the increasingly fractious nature of global technological development and the need for more inclusive cooperation frameworks. He pointed out that sharing would benefit from closer cooperation between countries that are at risk of U.S. pressure over their engagement with China, enabling them to continue their development and adoption of new technology. "The summit opens new pathways for South-South collaboration, where nations can support one another through trade, joint infrastructure projects, and technology sharing," he said. "It is particularly complementary in critical areas such as renewable energy, digital innovation, and public health." "This cooperation will be able to pursue an independent path of free and open trade and multilateralism. They can pursue their own paths," Azmi Hassan, a senior fellow at the Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research, also told Xinhua. ADVANCING MULTIPOLAR VISION FOR A CHANGING WORLD Kam also observed a broader strategic shift as Global South countries increasingly push back against Western pressure, particularly in areas such as monetary policy. Instead, these countries are seeking cooperation with partners who are grounded in respect for sovereignty, non-interference, and mutual benefit. "The summit supports practical steps to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar by promoting local currency trade and regional financial tools, helping these economies better withstand global financial shocks. Ultimately, the summit represents more than just policy agreements," he said. "(Multilateral engagement) fosters a multipolar dialogue that values diversity in development models and encourages the exchange of ideas and resources. This broadens the scope of multilateralism to include voices that have often been underrepresented in global decision-making processes, thereby making the international system more representative and equitable," he added. According to Azmi Hassan, U.S. policies have "backfired spectacularly," leading to increased engagement and cooperation among Global South partners. "Aggressive policies by the 'Global North' are only driving stronger cooperation and strengthening trade and economic links," he added.
