Laos methanol poisoning update on 'appalling' deaths as parents speak out

Daily Mirror19-05-2025

Australian teenagers, Bianca Jones and Holly Bowles, were killed in a suspected methanol poisoning in Laos alongside Brit Simone White, 28, and three other people
The parents of two Australian teenagers who died from suspected methanol poisoning in Laos have described an update into the investigation as 'appalling'. Bianca Jones and Holly Bowles, both 19, Brit lawyer Simone White, 28, Danes Anne-Sofie Orkild Coyman, 20, and Frela Vennervald Sorensen, 21, and American James Louis Hutson, 57, all died after consuming methanol.
They were all staying at the Nana Backpackers hostel and are thought to have drunk free alcoholic drinks handed out which were laced with the substance. Now in an update it has been revealed charges have finally been brought - but have sparked fury with the parents.

The families were told by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade 13 people from Nana's Hostel and the Tiger distillery are accused of a violation of food and health security, unlawful business operations and elimination of evidence.
Holly's mother told 60 Minutes the charges are 'pretty appalling, I'd say pretty insulting.'
Bianca's furious mum added: 'I think we're pretty furious about it … Food and beverage. You know, that's like? What is that? We don't even know.
'We know there's no murder or manslaughter charges, which we feel there should be.'
Earlier this year Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles told parliament Laos authorities have refused the Australian Federal Police (AFP)'s offer to support the investigation into the deaths.

He said: 'The AFP has made an offer to the authorities in Laos to provide their assistance in the investigation, and there is a whole lot of capability the AFP could bring.
'I have to report sadly to the house that at this point the Laos authorities have not taken up that invitation."
The families of Ms Jones and Ms Bowles issued a heartbreaking statement following the announcement, and said they were "extremely disappointed" by the lack of updates. They said: "As the Laos government rejects any support from the AFP our confidence in accountability and justice for everyone affected remains unanswered."
It is believed the tourists had all taken shots laced with methanol, which is sometimes used by disreputable bars as a cheaper alternative to ethanol (alcohol), and can cause severe poisoning or death.
Among the victims was Brit Simone White, 28, from Orpington, Kent. She was a lawyer with global law firm Squire Patton Boggs, whose work involved general commercial matters, and contentious and non-contentious intellectual property law issues, according to the firm's website.
Her parents described her as a 'beautiful, kind and loving daughter', adding: 'Simone was one of a kind and had the most wonderful energy and spark for life. Simone has been taken from us too soon, she will be sorely missed by her brother, grandmother and entire family.'

Hero Scots police dog sniffs out 'housebreaker' armed with two knives and 'swag'

It is the second time this week that Foss has helped arrested a knife thug. An a lleged housebreaker was arrested armed with two knives and his loot from the homes he is said to have robbed - after being sniffed out by a police dog. The man in question was spotted by an officer as he tried to make his escape, after Police Scotland received a report of a housebreaker, the force said. ‌ The dog in question - Foss - picked up the man's scent and tracked him, with him being found in possession of stolen goods - and two knives, and he was taken into custody. ‌ A picture of Foss and details of the arrest were posted on the Police Scotland Edinburgh Facebook page. It read: "#PDFoss caught a naughty man last night. "After a report of someone breaking in to houses, Foss's eagle eyed chauffeur spotted a "likely lad" who was quickly lost to sight. Foss got his nose to work & tracked him down, still in possession of the "swag" and 2 knives! Arrested!" Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! We told previously how an unlucky knife thug was caught armed with a huge blade by the dog. The arrest came while the pooch and dog handlers were in the middle of a training exercise. The male in question had been seen acting suspiciously in Larbert, near Falkirk. The alarm was raised, resulting in officers being asked to attend the scene, meaning the four dog handlers who were training close by attended the scene. ‌ Foss was utilised and the animal helped recover the blade. The black-handled machete measures more than two feet and has a blade which is more than one-and-a-half feet long. A picture of the deadly weapon was shared on social media. The weapon looked like its handle is metal and has been covered with dark electrical tape, and the weapon had what appeared to be string at the bottom. ‌ The string seems to act as a wrist strap and the logo for American knife manufacturing firm Mtech USA can be seen at the base of the blade on the weapon. A post on the Police Scotland Forth Valley Facebook page read: "When a male was reported acting suspiciously close to Larbert he clearly wasn't expecting 4 dog handlers to be training around the corner. "They diverted to the scene & after #PDFoss"spoke" to him they recovered this large knife he had concealed. #Pawsome #KnifeCrime." A picture of the dog was also published as part of the post. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'On Monday, 26 May, 2025, a 17-year-old male youth was arrested and charged in connection with possession of a weapon in the Larbert area.

Body of missing UK hiker found in Italian Alps after vanishing on New Year's Day

Aziz Ziriat, 36, vanished during a hiking trip in the Italian Dolomites with pal Samuel Harris, 35 - Samuel's body was found back in January but Aziz's remains were found on Saturday The body of a Brit who went missing on New Year's Day while hiking in the Italian Dolomites has been found. Aziz Ziriat, 36, from London went missing alongside his friend Samuel Harris, 25, at the beginning of the year. A massive search was launched after the pair were not heard from since January 1, reports the Mirror. His body was found this morning and the Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue team are now working to recover his remains. ‌ The pair were known to have been near the town of Tione Di Trento, near Riva Del Garda, on Lake Garda, before they vanished. The alarm was raised after the pair stopped responding to messages and failed to get on their flight back to the UK on January 6. ‌ Samuel's body was tragically found back in January, after his body had been buried under metres of deep snow. The search for the pair was complicated by poor weather conditions and heavy snow at high altitudes. Search teams discovered items belonging to Aziz, including his mobile phone and a card, not far from his friends body, in January. Despite this, the dozens of rescuers involved in the search were not able to find the 36-year-old at the time. ‌ Rescuers were hopeful the snow melting in the spring and summer would aid the search for Aziz. The operation to find his body is being coordinated by the Italian Guardia di Finanza and is ongoing. The pair had travelled to The Dolomites to hike between huts in the mountain range for a New Year's trip abroad. After the initial search for the friends began, Aziz's girlfriend described the pair as "experienced hikers", but revealed she had last spoken to her boyfriend at around 10am on New Year's Day. Rebecca Dimmock also shared her boyfriend's last messages to her before the pair were not heard from again. In January, she said: "He sent some photos of the mountains and a couple of himself. He said his phone was about to die but he would write back to me properly soon." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! She also revealed more details about the friends' hiking plans. Rebecca added: "I know they made it to the hut, and they were drinking red wine, but he said it was freezing." A video, at the time, showed Aziz preparing to hike the mountain range on New Year's Day with Samuel. He filmed the mountain range he planned to scale and a shelter it was believed the pair stayed overnight. Aziz had worked for Crystal Palace at the club's official Palace For Life charity. The Premier League club put out a post to appeal for information when he initially went missing.

Founder of New Hampshire addiction center charged in scheme to intimidate journalists

The founder and former CEO of New Hampshire's largest network of addiction centers was arrested Friday after federal prosecutors say he orchestrated a conspiracy to stalk and harass local journalists in retaliation for unfavorable reporting. The Justice Department announced the charges against Eric Spofford, 40, who founded the for-profit drug and alcohol treatment company Granite Recovery Centers, in a Friday press release. Prosecutors said Spofford — who lives in both Salem, New Hampshire, and Miami, Florida — was indicted on one count of conspiracy to commit stalking through interstate travel and using a facility of interstate commerce; one count of stalking using a facility of interstate commerce; and two counts of stalking through interstate travel. From March 2022 and continuing through at least May 2022, Spofford allegedly devised a scheme to harass and terrorize a reporter employed by New Hampshire Public Radio, her immediate family members and a senior editor at NHPR in retaliation for the outlet's reporting, officials said. That year, NHPR reported multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, abusive leadership and retaliation by Spofford during his time as CEO of the addiction center. Spofford denied the allegations and later filed a defamation lawsuit against the outlet, officials said. A judge dismissed Spofford's suit, NHPR reported. Prosecutors said Spofford paid his close friend $20,000 to throw large rocks and bricks at the victims' homes at night and spray-paint the properties with 'lewd and threatening language.' Spofford's friend was assisted by three others who are currently in prison for their involvement in the harassment scheme, prosecutors said. Jim Schachter, the president and CEO of NHPR, thanked the Justice Department in a statement on X and said that 'attacks on journalists have no place in American life.' 'His attempt to silence our reporting failed, as should every attempt to snuff out press freedom,' he wrote. The journalist who reported the investigation, Lauren Chooljian, did not immediately return a request for comment. Each count against Spofford carries a possible sentence of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000, prosecutors said. An attorney for Spofford could not be immediately reached for comment. A spokesperson for Granite Recovery Centers said in a phone call that Spofford sold the company three years ago and that 'he has nothing to do with the company.'
