COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – It was an up and down 2024 for Cody Durden.
The flyweight kept busy with three fights, though they were losses on the bookend sides. Sandwiched in the middle, though, was a pretty noteworthy fight he took up a weight class on a week's notice against Matt Schnell. He choked him out in the second round for a $50,000 bonus.
Still, with three setbacks in his past four fights, Durden could use a bounce-back and some fresh momentum at 125 pounds, and he's hopeful it'll come when he finally gets a chance to fight in the UFC in front of his home fans.
Durden (17-7-1 MMA, 6-5-1 UFC) takes on Jose Ochoa (7-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) when the UFC returns to his home city of Atlanta on June 14. And while Durden doesn't know his placement on the card yet, he knows he'll have a support system.
"I've got so many friends, family that haven't been able to see me fight yet in the UFC, and now it's coming to fruition," Durden told MMA Junkie from his American Top Team training base, where he's been working the past three weeks. "I'm excited. I am pumped, and I'm bringing a fight."
Durden, 34, said the first UFC event he attended was in Atlanta – UFC 201 in 2016. That planted the seed.
"My first ever UFC event was in 2016, Robbie Lawler vs. Tyron Woodley," Durden said. "I sat in a suite and I watched the fights, and that was the night I was really inspired. I told myself I'm going to fight in State Farm Arena one day. I'm going to fight here one day. I manifested it. Now it's happening. Now I've just got to stay healthy, and so far, so good."

Merab Dvalishvili lauds ex-champ Aljamain Sterling for UFC 316 title prep Show Caption Hide Caption UFC 316: Merab Dvalishvili post-fight interview UFC 316 winner Merab Dvalishvili spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters post-fight after his bantamweight title defense over Sean O'Malley. NEWARK, N.J. – Merab Dvalishvili has set the bar high for gifts at his pal Aljamain Sterling's upcoming wedding. Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) on Saturday defended his bantamweight title in a rematch with ex-champ Sean O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) in the UFC 316 main event. Dvalishvili beat O'Malley with a dominant decision this past fall, and made things look even easier with a third-round submission in the rematch. Afterward, the champ credited his longtime good friend and training partner, former bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling, for working with him during training camp – and pledged to give him half of his $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus as a wedding gift. When Sterling was champion, Dvalishvili said he was content to not fight for the belt as long as his friend held it. But O'Malley was the one who dethroned Sterling, which paved the way for Dvalishvili to make his title run – and sent Sterling to featherweight. "In this training camp, my friend Aljamain Sterling helped me so much," Dvalishvili said at his post-fight news conference at Prudential Center. "He doesn't have a fight (booked) – he's getting married. He doesn't really like sparring, but he was sparring with me three times a week (to mimic O'Malley). He was two times better than Sean O'Malley's striking. He was not trying to shoot on me, take me down. "That proves again that it's not always the best fighter who wins. O'Malley got really lucky against Aljo. But I'm grateful for my friend Aljamain Sterling." Dvalishvili has become known for his relentless pace and cardio – but also has been criticized for the lack of finishes on his resume. The submission of O'Malley broke a streak of five straight decision wins for the champ. Overall, 15 of his 20 career wins have gone the distance. His only UFC finish prior to the O'Malley rematch came against Marlon Moraes in 2021. Check out Dvalishvili's full post-fight news conference above.

'A generational run': Fighters react to Merab Dvalishvili's UFC 316 win over Sean O'Malley

Merab Dvalishvili proved too much for Sean O'Malley to handle once again in the UFC 316 main event. Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) retained his bantamweight title by defeating O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) in the third round with a submission to win the rematch and record his second title defense. Check below for the top X (formerly Twitter) reactions to Dvalishvili's title defense at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.: The MAIN EVENT of #UFC316 is here!Who wins: Merab Dvalishvili or Sean O'Malley?Full coverage: The fence in the stands came down after Merab Dvalishvili walked out at #UFC316. Shades of Mike Malott in Vancouver but all look OK, thankfully. Let's go Sugar . #AndNew again? Is Sean O'Malley winning? #UFC316 Let's go machineeeeeee @MerabDvalishvil 🦾🦾🦾 Suga 🍭 vs Merab 🇬🇪 #UFC316 O'Malley looks very locked in. I like this side of him. #UFC316 Some nice single shots by O'Malley but Merab turning up the machine and winning exchanges. #UFC316 Merab should keep him at the fence and just wear him out. 10-9 Dvalishvili. Fun round. His pace remains relentless #UFC316 10-9 Merab. O'Malley can't run forever. He needs to take risks sooner rather than later #UFC316 O'Malley didn't deserve this title shot at all. But it's actually a fascinating fight to watch - Sugar Sean scurrying around the ring like a rat and Merab pursuing like a mad man trying to smother and kill the rat #UFC316 O'Malley's defense has been halfway decent thus far, but he's struggling to find much offense #UFC316 2-0 Merab but good showing defensively from O'Malley. Defense isn't gonna win him the fight though. I like that corner advice that John Wood gave Merab in regards to going to the body after getups/off breaks #UFC316 As much as O'Malley has improved his takedown defence, you get the feeling that not scoring takedowns is as much a part of Merab's game plan as scoring them all about wearing them down and making them fight at an unsustainable pace. Nailing it through two round here. @MerabDvalishvil is taking Sean into deep water… What's he made of? We shall see! #UFC316 Merab doin what be does best Impressed by Merab. It's going to be hard for o''malley to handle this pressure. Don't see merab slowing down. #ufc316 Merab taps O'Malley in Round 3! #UFC316 #AndStill, The Machine. Merab Dvalishvili is an animal!!! 👏🏻👏🏻 #UFC316 Merab looked better than ever! Boxing and submission. #UFC316 Merab submits Suga in the guy never stops. A real machine out there. Sean O'Malley to the back of the line. He might never be UFC champion ever is an animal. Gonna be champ for a long time. #UFC316 #AndStill: Merab Dvalishvili #UFC316 Dominance from Merab. O'Malley was never in that fight and never belonged in that for both the champion and for those that said this rematch was an un-needed one. Love to see it. #UFC316 Merab Dvalishvili puts away Sean O'Malley with a submission in the rematch. Good stuff for him, and a tough moment for O'Malley who has a pretty much worst-case scenario and is in the position he feared with back-to-back defeats to Merab. Merab is amazing 👏🏽 #UFC316 I do want to see Cory fight for the title next but man at the same time I need to see that O'Malley vs sandhagen Great win Merab! Honestly this wasn't a fight, but straight bullying #ufc316 Unreal performance from @MerabDvalishvil best ever at 135 on a generational run 🔥 This is what happens when you're handed things you didn't earn. Back in line, buddy @SugaSeanMMA

Bryce Mitchell Set to Face Said Nurmagomedov at UFC Abu Dhabi After Recent Loss

Bryce Mitchell Set to Face Said Nurmagomedov at UFC Abu Dhabi After Recent Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There's nothing quite like a UFC comeback. Fighters returning from defeat often do so with renewed focus, altered strategies, and something to prove. A recent announcement signals that one of the promotion's most divisive personalities is back—and this time, he's cutting down a division in search of redemption. Advertisement Bryce Mitchell, 30, also known as 'Thug Nasty,' last seen inside the Octagon suffering a second-round guillotine choke loss to the undefeated Jean Silva at UFC 314. That April bout marked Mitchell's second loss in his last three appearances, raising questions about his trajectory in the featherweight division. According to Red Corner MMA, Mitchell is officially booked to return at UFC Fight Night: Abu Dhabi on July 26, where he'll make his bantamweight debut against Said Nurmagomedov. The move to 135 pounds is Mitchell's first major shift since joining the UFC, signaling a possible reinvention after years of grappling-heavy clashes at featherweight. Mitchell is as unpredictable outside the cage as he is inside it. One minute he's dropping conspiracy theories on cable news, the next he's submitting people with a twister. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC)(Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) Whether it's his outspoken political views, viral post-fight rants, or signature wardrobe choices, he's carved out a lane as one of the UFC's most controversial and talked-about fighters. Meanwhile, Nurmagomedov—a slick striker from Dagestan—is also looking to rebound after a decision loss to Vinicius Oliveira in February. With both men entering on a skid, the stakes feel amplified. UFC CEO Dana WhitePhoto by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC UFC President Dana White and the promotion are still piecing together the Abu Dhabi card, but this matchup adds intrigue and personality to an already anticipated Fight Night. It will be interesting to see if Mitchell can bounce back and settle in at this new weight class, especially with a dangerous opponent like Nurmagomedov standing in his way. A strong showing could open the door for fresh matchups and a revitalized run in a division loaded with talent.
