Sarawak women score first win in 15-a-side Selangor rugby tourney

KUCHING (May 6): Sarawak Rugby Union women's team created history after recording its first ever win in a 15-a-side league match beating Universiti Pertahanan National Malaysia (UPNM) 35-5 at the inaugural women's Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) Selangor Rugby Union (KRS) League at Padang Astaka, Petaling Jaya on Saturday.
The win is the first for a Sarawak state rugby team in the 15-a-side format in Peninsular Malaysia.
Led by former Malaysia 7s player and captain Cuthberta Entai, the young Sarawakian side dominated in a one-sided match against a spirited side from UPNM.
The win made up for the 5-29 loss in their first match against Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM) the previous weekend.
Winger Amau Siba contributed a hat-trick of tries to be Sarawak's top scorer in the convincing victory but coach Stephen Patrick warned the team must remain grounded and realistic.
'We still have a lot of work to do because this team has never played 15-a-side together. But with time, I believe Sarawak will be the team to watch,' he said.

The latest victory has assured the Sarawak players a place in the knockout round.
They will know who they will clash against after completing the final two league matches.
Sarawak Rugby, which is represented by 28 players, will face Cobra Venom on May 10 and complete their matches with a final game against KL Tigers RFC on May 17.

Harimau newcomer Hevel proves doubters wrong with Melaka claim
KUALA LUMPUR: Amid the ongoing controversy over Harimau Malaya's latest heritage recruits, Dutch-born Hector Hevel has silenced the doubters by confirming his Malaysian roots through his grandfather from Melaka. The 29-year-old midfielder, who made his debut and scored in Malaysia's 2-0 win over Nepal during the Asia Cup qualifiers in March, is delighted to be recalled by coach Peter Cklamovski for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Vietnam on June 10. "My Malaysian heritage comes from my grandfather — he's from Melaka, so there's no issue," said Hevel. "I haven't had much connection as many of the family have passed away, but when I play here for JDT, I'll visit and learn more about it." Malaysia haven't beaten Vietnam in years — something Hevel and his teammates are eager to change. "That's extra motivation for us. Vietnam have a good squad, but we have our weapons too." Born in the Netherlands, Hevel spoke about the challenges of adapting to the international stage. "Playing for your club is not the same as playing for your country. The tempo, the style — it's different. Each time I come to camp, I aim to improve and get back into rhythm. "I don't feel any pressure from scoring on debut. I'll try to help the team — through goals, assists or just by organising play. There are many ways to contribute." With up to 30,000 fans expected at Bukit Jalil for the must-win qualifier, Hevel urged the home crowd to rally behind the team. "We're playing at home. The fans must come and support us. It makes a difference — maybe it's 0-0 in the 80th minute, and we need their energy to push us over the line." Hevel is one of seven new foreign-born players in the squad. Terengganu deny in talks to release winger Akhyar
KUALA NERUS: Terengganu have denied allegations that the club are currently in negotiations with Brunei for the transfer of their agile winger Akhyar Rashid. Their acting chief executive officer, Mohd Syahrizan Mohd Zain said that so far, no party had come forward with an official request, including the invited Super League team Brunei. He said the Kedah-born player has a contract with the Turtles until 2027 and remains in the team's main plans for the upcoming Malaysian League (M-League) season. 'The player (Akhyar) is still contracted until 2027. We have not received any official letter, let alone engaged in negotiations with Brunei regarding the player's transfer,' said Syahrizan.
