MCMC probes social media post featuring incomplete Jalur Gemilang illustration
KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into a social media post that featured an illustration of the Jalur Gemilang in an incomplete form.
In a statement today, the MCMC said that as part of the investigation, one individual has provided a statement to the commission, and a mobile phone has been seized to assist with the probe.
The investigation was initiated following several public complaints regarding the post.
'Other individuals involved will be called in if necessary, and the investigation paper will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further instructions.
'The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA 1998), which provides for a fine of up to RM500,000, or imprisonment for up to two years, or both upon conviction,' the statement said.
The Jalur Gemilang is a national symbol that embodies sovereignty and unity. The use of inaccurate illustrations, particularly on online platforms, can cause confusion and offend public sensitivities.
In light of this, the MCMC urges all social media users to be more cautious and responsible when creating and uploading content, especially in today's digital era involving technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and content generators.
The commission reminded the public that self-regulation and thorough fact-checking are crucial to prevent the spread of misleading content or material that may disrupt societal harmony.

KEPALA BATAS : The authorities in Penang have identified several places where imported durians, particularly from Thailand, are being falsely marketed as the famed Balik Pulau variety. State agriculture executive councillor Fahmi Zainol said joint operations involving the police, agriculture department and Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) would be launched soon to curb such fraudulent practices. 'We've identified two or three hotspots where durians are brought in by truck from Thailand but sold as local produce. 'We're just waiting for the right time to conduct the raids and issue compounds,' he told reporters at the Bumbong Lima Agricultural Training Institute today. He said this followed public complaints and ongoing monitoring by authorities. A roadblock has been set up at the Juru toll plaza by the Malaysian quarantine and inspection services department (Maqis) and other agencies to detect non-compliant agricultural products, especially durians. While durians from other regions are not banned, Fahmi said sellers must not misrepresent them as Balik Pulau durians. 'We now have a 'track and trace' system in place since June 1. Every durian is tagged with a QR code that lets consumers verify its origin, from farm to table,' he said. He urged the public to report suspicious sellers, adding that most legitimate durian farmers in Penang had adopted the tracking system to boost transparency and consumer confidence.

Online scams dominate Kelantan's commercial crime list, over RM14m lost this year
KOTA BARU, June 18 — Kelantan recorded a total of 601 commercial crime cases during the first five months of this year, resulting in losses amounting to RM14.1 million, according to state police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat. He said that based on statistics comparing cases and financial losses by the modus operandi of commercial crimes, the cyber and multimedia crime category recorded the highest number of cases at 401 incidents, or 67 per cent of the total, and resulting in losses amounting to RM7.47 million. 'Common cybercrimes include online fraud such as phone scams, fake purchases via social media, job scams, and love scams.' 'The second highest category involves investment scam cases, the use of electronic cards, and other related crimes, with 105 cases recorded, accounting for 17.4 per cent, and losses totalling RM4.54 million,' he said at a press conference after the monthly assembly for June, held at the Kelantan contingent police headquarters here today. Meanwhile, crimes related to finance, banking, cooperatives, and insurance recorded 81 cases (13.47 per cent), with total losses amounting to RM966,336.38. 'For cases involving forgery, embezzlement, and land-related offences, only seven cases were recorded (1.16 per cent), with losses amounting to RM85,000. Corporate cases also recorded seven cases (1.16 per cent), but with significantly higher losses of RM1.05 million,' he said. Mohd Yusoff added that the police are intensifying awareness and prevention efforts through collaboration with relevant agencies and the public to combat the increasingly complex nature of commercial crimes. 'Over the past few months, we have seen an alarming rise in street crimes, including robbery, snatch theft, housebreaking, as well as a growing number of commercial crimes occurring through online platforms.' 'Crimes such as online fraud, investment scams, and identity theft now not only result in financial losses but also impact the emotional well-being and sense of security within the community,' he said. — Bernama

Ex-deputy Senate president claims trial to RM235K graft over reclamation project
The Shah Alam sessions court allowed former Dewan Negara deputy speaker Ali Mohamad to post bail of RM60,000 for all 20 charges against him. PETALING JAYA : Former Dewan Negara deputy speaker Ali Mohamad pleaded not guilty today to 20 charges of corruption involving RM235,000 and three luxury cars, allegedly linked to a land reclamation project in Melaka. Ali, 61, entered the plea at the Shah Alam sessions court after the charges were read to him before judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud, Utusan Malaysia reported. The Bersatu deputy information chief was accused of accepting bribes between April 18, 2024, and Jan 20 this year while serving as managing director of Puncak Jasasia Sdn Bhd. The alleged bribes, ranging from RM5,000 to RM20,000 per transaction, were purportedly received 15 times as an inducement for appointing Benalec Sdn Bhd as the contractor for a 40-hectare reclamation project in Kota Laksamana. Ali was also accused of receiving a BMW 730Li, a Range Rover, and a Bentley Flying Spur between January 2017 and May 2024 at premises in Glenmarie and Sungai Buloh. The charges were framed under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib proposed bail of RM60,000 and requested that Ali surrender his passport. Ali's counsel, Md Yunos Shariff, agreed to the terms and appealed for judicial discretion in granting bail. Judge Awang then set bail at RM60,000 and ordered Ali not to interfere with prosecution witnesses. The case is scheduled for mention on July 24.
