Brave surviving son pictured by Hallmark star's side after wife was killed in BC car-ramming attack
Hallmark actor Noel Johansen was pictured standing beside his teenage son, Ford, as the two attended at a vigil in Vancouver days after his wife was killed when an SUV rammed into a crowd of festival goers.
Ford, 15, stood solemnly beside his injured father, who was one of dozens who had gathered to mourn the lives shattered following Saturday night's catastrophic car-ramming attack that left eleven people dead and many more wounded.
Among the dead was Johansen's wife and Ford's mother, celebrated costume designer Jenifer Darbellay.
Jenifer was killed instantly when an SUV rammed through a packed street festival celebrating Filipino heritage.
Photographs from the vigil show Johansen, visibly shaken and leaning on crutches, flanked by both Ford. His seven-year-old daughter, Darby, also survived the attack but was injured.
The image of father and son standing shoulder to shoulder has already become something of symbol of heartbreak and resilience - a family fractured, but not broken.
The actor, who has appeared in Psych, Supernatural, Fargo and The Good Doctor, was on crutches as he madea an address during the vigil: 'What you see here is an injury that means nothing to me because what's inside my heart is broken.
'Because my wife passed away behind me at the incident.
'She never celebrated herself in her life. She never thought of herself; she thought of herself as small in terms of the reach. And I can tell you she was larger than life for any of you who know her.
'So don't be small in life, be big, reach out and reach out as a human being with everything you have, and please remember us who went through this.'
Johansen is best known for his work on Hallmark Channel shows and films including: Garage Sale Mystery: All That Glitters, When Calls the Heart, Chesapeake Shores, Harvest Love, Reunited at Christmas and Roux the Day: A Gourmet Detective Mystery.
A GoFundMe has been set up by Johansen's friend and business partner Michael Daingerfield has already raised more than $190,000 so far.
'I am literally in shock as I write this - but I want to do something for Noel and his two children Ford, 15, and Darby, 7,' Daingerfield said of his friend and the family.
'This is an incredibly difficult time for Noel, and moving forward with his life is going to feel insurmountable.
'Jen was a one-of-a-kind. She was an incredibly thoughtful, warm, caring, smart, stylish, artistic woman. A gifted painter, a selfless mother, and a loving wife. She gave the best hugs, was always there to listen without judgement, and had the sweetest voice.
'She was not only special to me and my family (wife and kids), but she was special to many other friends and people - giving of herself volunteering on the PAC committee at Sir Alexander Mackenzie, Darby's school.'
Horrifying video and pictures showed utter devastation as mangled bodies were strewn across the road following the crash.
Dazed bystanders could be seen racing away from the scene and from victim to victim as local cops swooped and arrested the driver, Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30.
Lo allegedly to have told witnesses he was 'sorry' as he was dragged out of the car.
Lo severe mental breakdown after his brother was murdered last year and his mother then tried to commit suicide.
He is now facing eight counts of second-degree murder and remains in custody.
Authorities have previously said that the suspect was 'known to police in certain circumstances' and was believed to have been suffering from delusions and paranoia prior to the attack.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was 'devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver... We are all mourning with you.'
The Psych star was on crutches at a vigil for the victims as he choked back tears while addressing the crowd
Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada's New Democratic Party, was among the attendees at the event, but left minutes before the vehicle arrived, CTV news said.
'This is so horrific, I don't even know what to say,' Singh said.
'I was just there, and I just imagine the faces of the kids that I saw smiling and dancing.'
Usually the city parks dump trucks to block streets for festivals but for unknown reasons that didn't happen on Saturday.
The festival had drawn families, children, and neighbors from across Vancouver, many eager to enjoy the warm spring evening, unaware of the horror about to unfold.
Instead, the street became a makeshift triage center as bystanders rushed to provide first aid before paramedics could arrive.
Videos posted on social media showed stunned festivalgoers standing beside twisted tents, toppled chairs, and scattered belongings, the aftermath of what should have been an ordinary, joyous community event.
Eyewitness videos from the scene show severe injuries among festival attendees, including reports of a baby trapped under a vehicle, while emergency responders could be seen performing CPR on victims.
The 11 dead range in age from just five to 65.
Lo's mental breakdown was believed to have happened when his father died shortly after the family moved into their Vancouver home, according to the Globe and Mail.
His brother, Alexander, 31, was then found murdered inside a home at around 1am on January 28, 2024, the Vancouver Sun reports.
Dwight William Kematch, 39, was arrested at the house and was later charged with second degree murder.
'It pains me deeply to put these words down, but my brother has been taken from us in a senseless act of violence, something we never saw coming,' he wrote at the time.
'Our reality has abruptly shifted. Despite our disagreements, the harsh truth that he's no longer with us hits me with an overwhelming force.
'I'm burdened with remorse for not spending more time with him,' Kai-Ji continued. 'I implore you to keep his soul in your thoughts and prayers.'
Vancouver police secure the scene after a car drove into a crowd at the Lapu Lapu Festival -- April 26, 2025
Meanwhile the driver has been identified as a 30-year-old man who suffered a severe mental breakdown after his brother was murdered last year and his mother then tried to commit suicide as suspect, Kai-Ji Adam Lo, is now facing eight counts of second-degree murder
The fundraiser netted over $9,000 for Alexander's funeral.
But just months later, in August, Kai-Ji was back asking for donations - this time after his mother attempted suicide and ended up in the hospital for a month.
'The unimaginable grief brought upon my mother is something that is worse than my own sadness,' Kai-Ji wrote.
'For she brought him into this world, only for him to leave abruptly, it is a sadness I cannot begin to express.'
'She lost a son already and is on the verge of losing her home. This has driven her to attempt to take her own life,' he shared.
In the aftermath, Lo is said to have had several run-ins with police and health care professionals.
Authorities even showed up to the Lo's house within the last two weeks to ask for security footage, neighbors told the Globe and Mail.
They described how they could often hear Lo screaming inside.
'He always was yelling with his mom. I don't know why,' one of the neighbors said.
'He is really nervous,' the neighbor said of Lo. 'Very- always scared of something happening that might hurt him.'
In fact, just hours before Saturday's attack, a family member had even contacted a psych ward, the Sun reports.

Crew hired for ship with largest cocaine seizure were under ‘financial pressure'
The Special Criminal Court in Dublin heard the circumstances of how the men became involved in the massive drug trafficking operation on the MV Matthew, which was found to be carrying more than 2.2 tonnes of cocaine in September 2023. Eight men admitted their roles in trying to smuggle cocaine worth over 157 million euros (£132 million). The MV Matthew was found to be carrying 2.2 tonnes of cocaine (Niall Carson/PA) The ship was intercepted and seized following a massive joint Defence Forces, garda and customs operation. The Irish Army Ranger Wing has been praised in court for putting their lives at risk when they boarded the vessel in severe weather conditions while the crew attempted to steer the ship to high seas. Six of the men arrested on board the MV Matthew had ignored repeated warnings from the LE William Butler Yeats naval vessel. Two other men were rescued from a boat that was bought in Castletownbere, which had been purchased to collect drugs from the main vessel. Ukrainians Mykhailo Gavryk and Vitaliy Vlasoi, both 32; Iranians Soheil Jelveh and Saeid Hassani, 39; Filipino Harold Estoesta, 31, and Dutch national Cumali Ozgen, 49, all pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine for sale or supply on board the MV Mathew between 24 and 26 September 2023. Ukrainian national Vitaliy Lapa, aged 62, with an address at Rudenka, Repina Str in Berdyansk, pleaded guilty to attempting to possess cocaine for sale or supply between 21 and 25 September 2023. Jamie Harbron, aged 31, of South Avenue, Billingham in the UK, also pleaded guilty that on a date between September 21 and September 25, 2023, both dates inclusive, he attempted to have cocaine in his possession for the purpose of sale or supply, an offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Lawyers for Vitaliy Lapa claimed the now-62-year-old was not aware of the full scale of the operation (Brian Lawless/PA) Colman Cody SC, counsel for Lapa, told the sentence hearing that his client was not aware of the full scale of the operation and did not have full knowledge of the operation or the structures of the criminal organisation. The married father-of-two was told he would be paid 5,000 euros for his involvement in the operation. Lapa had been in the merchant navy and had previously worked on fishing boats. He had recently retired and was a pensioner in Ukraine. Detective Superintendent Keith Halley agreed that Lapa was at the lower end of the structure. Estoesta was the second officer on board the vessel, who said he had met some of the crew in Venezuela. The court heard how some members of the hired crew were distracted at night while those from the criminal enterprise had loaded some of the cargo containing drugs on to the vessel. They claimed that they had been entertained with alcohol while the so-called spare parts were being transferred on to the ship. Vitaliy Vlasoi claimed his 'realisation' of the situation came too late when he discovered that the enterprise was being run at a higher level by people not on the ship (Niall Carson/PA) Estoesta admitted he was concerned it was more than spare parts, as he saw armed men on the other ship, which was offloading the large cargo. He said he didn't argue as he was terrified and was alone in the ocean. He thought the cargo may have contained contraband, like weapons or cigarettes. His barrister, Michael Hourigan, said that he had a genuine fear of the consequences if he did not follow orders. Vlasoi, a 33-year-old sailor, became involved in the operation after he was contacted when he posted his sailing credentials online. The court heard that he is married with a five-year-old child, who is now living in Ireland with the accused's mother. Paul O'Higgins SC for Vlasoi told the court that his client's 'realisation' of the situation came too late when he discovered that the enterprise was being run at a higher level by people not on the ship. He told gardai that there were outside forces in control. He was told he would be paid 5,000 euros for his part in the operation. Mr O'Higgins said that his client found himself in a vulnerable financial position as he tried to provide for his family during the war in Ukraine. Saeid Hassani claimed he succumbed to temptation because of financial pressure (Niall Carson/PA) Hassani, a third officer on board the vessel, qualified from maritime college in 2009 and had been at sea constantly for over a decade. Mark Lyam SC, for the 40-year-old, told the court he is married with a six-year-old daughter, and that he had financial responsibility to provide for his family, including medical care. Mr Lyam said he succumbed to temptation because of that financial pressure and wanting to spend more time with his family. The court was also told that he sent a text to someone in Dubai thanking them for the opportunity. Hassani, who was airlifted from the boat, was described as being the lowest rank in terms of officers. Jamie Harbron, of South Avenue, Billingham, was described in court as a drug user, induced into the operation to clear a debt (Brian Lawless/PA) Meanwhile, Michael O'Higgins SC, counsel for Harbron, described his client as a drug abuser who was 'induced' into the operation to clear a drug debt. Described as being a last-minute entry into the enterprise, he was offered a 10,000 euro reduction on his drug debt of 20,000 euros. From Scotland, the court heard how Harbron, who was on board the second ship, the Castlemor, had no sailing experience, was not able to operate the radio and was not able to locate the life vest on board. Mr O'Higgins said he had no role in organising, financing or giving directions. Harbron suspected the cargo on board the larger vessel was drugs, but he said he was shocked when he saw the size of it. Drugs worth almost 160 million euros were seized from the MV Matthew by Irish authorities (Niall Carson/PA) Brendan Grehan SC, counsel for Dutch national Ozgen, admitted to having loaded three crates of drugs onto the vessel and also played a part in trying to burn drugs by getting paint thinners. He said he expected to earn a bonus of between 50,000 euros and 100,000 euros. Mr Grehan said that Ozgen, who had no sailing experience, has a son with a serious health issue following an operation on a brain tumour. 'It was partly the attraction in terms of getting involved in that he would get money to help (his son) out,' Mr Grehan added. He told the court that his client was involved in a misguided attempt to get money for his family. Keivon Sotoodeh, junior counsel for Jelveh, told the court that his client is a 51-year-old with two adult children. Mr Sotoodeh said Jelveh was simply following orders and accepts he got himself involved in this, however, he 'wasn't at the top of the food chain'. The matter has been put back to July 4. The men have been remanded on the same terms and conditions.

Armie Hammer reunites with ex-wife and kids for milestone... after scary cannibalism scandal
Armie Hammer had a rare reunion with his ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers to celebrate an important milestone with their eight-year-old son Ford. The 38-year-old actor and his 42-year-old ex Chambers share two children together, Ford and 10-year-old daughter Harper. The Social Network star and his entrepreneur/TV personality wife were married from 2010 until their split in 2020, with their divorce finalized in 2023, amid his cannibalism scandal. The exes have been co-parenting their children since the split, and they came together to celebrate Ford completing the second grade. Chambers shared a joyful snap of the exes and their kids, with Chambers sharing his second grade completion certificate. 'Happy 2nd Grade Step-Up Fordy Boy!' the doting mom said in the snap, with her son holding on to the family's dog. Armie was seen smiling in the snap with his arm around Harper, donning a black t-shirt, black pants and holding a black coat. Chambers donned a stylish black and white striped dress along with gold bracelets and gold earrings for the outing. Hammer shot to fame after playing the Winklevoss Twins in 2010's The Social Network, that was instrumental in launching his career. That rising career quickly came crashing down in 2021 when multiple accusations of sexual assault, rape and even cannibalism surfaced. While the LAPD launched an investigation, no charges were filed against the actor, who has admitted to consensual BDSM and emotional abuse, but denies all sexual assault and cannibalism charges, which stemmed from a woman named Courtney Vucekovich who alleged he said he wanted to cook and eat one of her ribs. Chambers recently promoted her upcoming show Toxic on The Today Show, where she admitted that things were great with her ex and children. 'They're amazing. We're amazing. I think we've never been stronger as a family,' Chambers said. 'This show touches on domestic violence, it touches on really unhealthy patterns. For me, I just experienced betrayal,' she said of her relationship with Hammer. 'But in that process, I really learned so much about patterns and how parenting, really it comes down to parenting,' Chambers added. 'It comes down to humanity and psychology and all of those interesting things,' she said, while admitting she's not a fan of the term 'co-parenting.' 'I don't love that word co-parenting, right? I think we're just parents and everyone is just parenting as well as they can with what they have,' Chambers said. 'Our family is, again, so strong and better than ever. But for me, divorce in itself is just trauma, Chambers admitted.
