
El Gouna Film Festival opens submissions for eighth edition

El Gouna Film Festival (GFF) has begun accepting film submissions for its eighth edition, set to take place from October 16 to 24, 2025. The submission period, which commenced on April 1, 2025, will remain open until June 30, 2025.
Known for its cultural scene and commitment to artistic innovation, the festival is held in the picturesque town of El Gouna, providing an inspiring setting for filmmakers and industry professionals. The event celebrates cinematic excellence and serves as a prominent platform for both emerging and established filmmakers.
Competing films will vie for the esteemed El Gouna Star awards, with a total prize pool of $234,000 distributed across three main categories: Feature Narrative Competition, Feature Documentary Competition and Short Film Competition. Additionally, films exploring humanitarian themes can compete for the Cinema for Humanity Audience Award, while those focusing on environmental issues are eligible for the El Gouna Green Star Award.

La Biennale di Venezia has announced the opening of submissions for the 13th edition of Final Cut in Venice. The deadline for submitting projects is set for June 9, 2025. The upcoming edition of Final Cut in Venice will be held from August 31 to September 2, 2025, as part of the Venice Production Bridge during the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, which will run from August 27 to September 6, 2025, on the Lido di Venezia. Launched in 2013, the Final Cut in Venice programme has played a vital role in supporting the completion of high-quality films from Africa and the Middle East, including Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Yemen. It has become a key platform for nurturing emerging talents and facilitating international recognition and awards for films from these regions. Filmmakers interested in participating must complete the pre-selection online entry form and send all required materials by the June 9 deadline. The three-day programme will showcase selected films-in-progress in working copy form to an audience of industry professionals, including producers, buyers, distributors and festival programmers. These screenings are open exclusively to accredited Industry pass holders. In addition to public screenings, a full day of individual meetings will take place on September 2, allowing filmmakers to connect directly with industry stakeholders. The programme will culminate in the awarding of both in-kind and cash prizes aimed at supporting the films' post-production phases. For the ninth consecutive year, La Biennale di Venezia will present a €5,000 award to the best film in post-production. This prize will be decided by a three-member jury appointed by the Festival Director. All other awards will be determined by the Festival Director in collaboration with Final Cut in Venice supporters. Confirmed supporters of the 2025 edition include: 196 Media, M74srl, Cinémathèque Afrique (Institut Français), El Gouna Film Festival, Festival International du Film d'Amiens, Festival International de Films de Fribourg, Laser Film, MAD Solutions, Mnemonica, Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, Oticons, Red Sea Fund, Rai Cinema, Studio A Fabrica, Sub-Ti Ltd, Sub-Ti Access Srl and Titra Film. For the fourth consecutive year, the Red Sea International Film Festival will provide additional support to the Final Cut in Venice initiative. The 82nd Venice International Film Festival, under the direction of Alberto Barbera and organised by La Biennale di Venezia, will be held from August 27 to September 6, 2025, continuing its long-standing tradition of championing global cinema.

The Egyptian Pavilion will serve as a hub for international engagement throughout the festival, offering a curated series of panel discussions that connect global industry professionals with opportunities and talent from Egypt and the wider Arab world. The panels will cover critical topics such as Egypt's potential as a global filming destination, cross-industry collaboration between Hollywood and Cairo, and strategies for strengthening the regional film festival ecosystem. A key highlight of the programme includes the panel 'Filming in Egypt: Egypt as a Global Filming Destination' on May 14, which will explore the country's appeal and practical advantages for international film productions. Subsequent sessions will examine cooperation between the American and Egyptian film sectors, the growth of co-productions within the Arab world, and the rise of emerging Arab filmmakers. Artistic Director Marianne Khoury underlined the programme's broader goals, and added: 'From insightful discussions to celebrating the success of films like Aisha Can't Fly Anymore (Un Certain Regard) and Life After Siham (2025 ACID), our program in Cannes is designed to spotlight the talent and opportunities within the Egyptian film landscape.' Palestinian film ‘Thank You for Banking With Us!' screens across Egypt, KSA and UAE
The film has received significant support, including grants from the El Gouna Film Festival and recognition from the CineGouna Platform. Palestinian filmmaker Laila Abbas's debut feature, Thank You for Banking With Us!, is now running Zawya Cinema – Egypt, Hayy Jameel – Saudi Arabia and Cinema Akil – UAE The drama explores themes of female empowerment through the story of sisters Mariam and Noura, who, after their father's death, devise a plan to secure a large sum of money he left behind. Their scheme aims to outmanoeuvre their brother, who is legally entitled to half of the inheritance. Laila Abbas described the film as a narrative about the strength of womanhood and the importance of emotional and physical unity among women. 'It's a story about sisters who, having endured their own tragedies and heartbreaks, come together to become stronger,' she said. Thank You for Banking With Us! is a joint German-Palestinian production, written, directed and produced by Abbas through her Ramallah-based company Young Oak Productions. Co-produced by Hanna Atallah of Palestine Cinema Days and Roshanak Behesht Nedjad of Berlin's In Good Company Films, the film is being handled for worldwide sales and distribution by MAD World. MAD Solutions and Lagoonie Film Production, the Cairo and Riyadh-based production entity, have also teamed up to co-produce Thank You for Banking With Us! Thank You for Banking With Us! has received support thus far from the El Gouna Film Festival in 2018 through four $10,000 grants from ART, Cedars Productions, O Three Productions and Metafora respectively. Moreover, it won the In-Development Award from the CineGouna Platform and was supported by the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture as well as the Doha Film Institute's 2023 edition of the Qumra Initiative. With additional funding from German film funds (Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung, and the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg), and the Hubert Bals Plus Europe of International Film Festival Rotterdam, Thank You for Banking With Us! stands as a testament to the power of collective artistic vision. Notably, it was also among the winners of the Red Sea Fund's third cycle.
