Wrexham want in-demand Premier League legend's son – but he'd cost record fee
Wrexham are set to enter the race to sign a midfielder who is the son of a former Premier League star, and is also a target for three of their Championship rivals
Wrexham are gearing up for a four-way tussle to sign the offspring of a former Premier League star. Reading's Charlie Savage, son of ex- Wales international Robbie Savage, is on the radar of several Championship clubs.
Alongside newly-promoted Wrexham and Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth are also believed to be keen on the 22-year-old midfielder. The Red Dragons might have to break their transfer record to entice Savage to the Racecourse Ground.
The fee is likely to surpass the £2million shelled out by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney for Reading striker Sam Smith in the January transfer window. Savage was instrumental for the Royals in League One last season, bagging seven goals and providing 13 assists across all competitions as they narrowly missed out on the play-off spots.
Mirror Football understands he could be eager for a move to a higher division in a bid to reclaim his spot in Craig Bellamy 's Wales squad. A graduate of Manchester United 's youth academy, Savage made a single first-team appearance for the Red Devils.
He came on as a late substitute in a Champions League match against Young Boys in December 2021 before making the switch to Reading in the summer of 2023. Wrexham could have an ace up their sleeve in the race for Savage's signature, given that his dad was born and bred in the area.
Charlie has earned two caps for the Wales senior team and made his debut at the Racecourse in October 2023. He completed the entire match and notched up an assist in a resounding 4-0 friendly thumping of Gibraltar.
Among the crowd was his grandmother, who lives just a stone's throw from the iconic ground, accompanied by his dad. At the time, an elated Charlie told the Mirror: "This is the proudest day of my life. I've been through some tough times for various reasons at different clubs recently, and to have my family here makes all the sacrifice and the hard times worth it.
"I'm so proud that he's my dad, for everything he achieved in the game, but I also want to be my own player. My dad has always instilled in me to work hard and the rest will take care of itself."
Robbie, who holds 39 caps for Wales, said: "His pride in the red shirt of Wales speaks for itself because he was born in England and his mother was born in Scotland, so he could have played for either of them.
"He's got a left foot like a wand and he's an elegant player on the ball, but he needs to win more duels and Reading is a great place for him to work on that physical side of his game.
"But you can't write scripts like the one he's writing for himself – first his dad's on the air when he makes his first United appearance in the Champions League, and now he's got a Wales cap in front of his nana, who has hardly been out of the house for three years since Covid.
"It was written in the stars for it to happen here. I was stood behind the goal as a 10-year-old boy when Mark Hughes scored that incredible bicycle kick against Spain in 1985 and I didn't think it could get any better – but this tops it."
Charlie is the latest name being linked with a potential move to Wrexham this summer following their promotion from League One in April. Jamie Vardy, Tom Cairney and Ben Davies are among the other high-profile players rumoured to be on their radar, along with West Ham pair Aaron Cresswell and Danny Ings, who are both out of contract this month.

First Tottenham star reacts to Ange Postecoglou sacking with social media statement
That famous night in Bilbao that delivered Tottenham a first piece of major silverware since the 2007/08 League Cup and first in Europe since the 1983/84 UEFA Cup, as well as sealing a return to the Champions League next season, was ultimately not enough for the Australian to save his job following a disastrous Premier League campaign that saw the club finish just one spot above the relegation zone in 17th, amassing only 38 points as they lost 22 of their 38 matches.

Reece James reacts to Chelsea's signing of in-demand striker Liam Delap
Reece James is 'delighted' that Chelsea saw off competition from Manchester United to secure the signing of in-demand striker Liam Delap. Enzo Maresca's side had made signing a new striker a priority for the start of the transfer window, and quickly earmarked Delap after his promising first season in the Premier League. The Ipswich Town striker scored 12 goals in 37 league games, but was available for just £30million following his side's relegation back to the Championship. Chelsea moved quickly to sign the 22-year-old, seeing off interest from United who also held one-to-one talks with the England U21 international. Delap spoke of his desire to win trophies as a key motivator for his move to Stamford Bridge, with James confident that the striker has what it takes to deliver the goods for his new club. 'He's had a great season at Ipswich and I'm very happy he's going to be joining us for next season,' James said ahead of England's World Cup qualifier with Andorra. 'He's a great player and I'm delighted he's with us.' James, meanwhile, finds himself back in England's squad for a second successive time under Thomas Tuchel as the full-back continues to put the worst of his injury woes behind him. The Chelsea skipper has plenty of competition for the coveted right-back spot in the starting eleven, but believes his performances over recent months should speak for themselves. 'For sure, I'm moving in the right direction. I finished off the season strong and I feel like I'm in a good place,' he added. 'It's something I'm used to – playing and competing with world-class players. 'They (Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker) are two phenomenal players in my position so of course it's going to be tough but we all have different capabilities and strengths, so it's whichever the manager wants to decide to play.' Tuchel, meanwhile, expressed his sympathies with recently sacked Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou. It was only last month that Postecoglou carried Spurs to Europa League glory, but Daniel Levy has now chosen to part ways with the Australian, who paid the price for a disastrous league campaign which saw his side lose 22 of their 38 games. More Trending 'It just shows you that it is not only about titles, you can survive seasons without titles if your connection, the support and the belief and the trust between the coach and the club is strong then you can overcome seasons without titles,' Tuchel said. 'If there is slight disbelief, if there are concerns, if the trust is not there anymore, obviously then it is sometimes not even enough to win a trophy after so many years. 'I have biggest respect for him. He's a huge character, he brought a trophy, he said he will deliver in the second year and he did. 'But this is part of the job, we are responsible for the results and we are responsible for the development of the team so, whether we like it or not, sometimes it is us who has to take the full responsibility.'
