Daily's Premium Meats expansion will bring over 100 jobs to St. Joseph
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — A groundbreaking ceremony took place Monday outside of Daily's Premium Meats to officially start an expansion that will double the size of the plant.
Many political figures were in attendance, including Missouri Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe.
We're going to continue as governor to make sure Missouri is a place businesses can grow," Gov. Kehoe said. "Where innovation is welcome and where our workforce remains one of the strongest in the country."
The $95 million expansion will bring in about 115 new jobs and now St. Joseph, Missouri, will produce 5% of the bacon in the United States.
Buchanan County Western District Commissioner Ron Hook said the new jobs and more bacon were some of the main positives from the expansion.
"We got a of workforce people really wanting to work, get to work and have good jobs," Hook said. "Buchanan County and the City of St. Joseph are here to help any business around to create more jobs for the people that need the work."
St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Natalie Hawn said one of the successes St. Joseph has had is "growing its own."
"When we have a company here, really working with them to expand here versus other parts of the country and that is exactly what happened here with Daily's," Hawn said. "They are a great partner and they're looking to expand here in St. Joseph, where they already had a plant, literally doubling the size of what they have today."
The expansion will take five years to complete. Gov. Kehoe complimented the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce during his speech and said they have an understanding of "what the end game is," which is to create more opportunities for Missourians.
"Whenever you have a chamber that is that involved, that integrated into the community, you see good success like we have here at Daily's," Gov. Kehoe said. "We couldn't be happier with the (near) $100 million expansion and the over 100 jobs we are adding to the area.

House energy chair: Musk ‘never mentioned' megabill on day of vote
Elon Musk now says he considers the GOP mega budget reconciliation bill an 'abomination.' But he never brought up those objections during a breakfast just hours after the House passed the measure, House Energy and Commerce Chair Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.) said Tuesday. 'I went directly from that vote straight to a breakfast with Elon, and he never mentioned the bill that morning,' Guthrie said during POLITICO's annual Energy Summit in Washington. Instead, he said, Musk's big obsessions included competition with China to dominate artificial intelligence. Guthrie's comments landed just a week after Musk began attacking President Donald Trump's 'big beautiful bill,' calling it 'a disgusting abomination' for increasing the deficit. Musk — who has exited the federal government after leading Trump's Department of Government Efficiency — traded back-and-forth attacks with Trump last week. But Guthrie, who played a key role in crafting the health care, technology and energy portions of the legislation, said Tuesday that he met with Musk the day the bill passed alongside his fellow committee Republicans. 'He talked about AI, he talked about all this stuff that [was] energy,' Guthrie said. 'Never mentioned the bill. And the bill had just been voted.' Guthrie also addressed Musk's suggestions that the mega-billionaire, who spent more than $200 million backing Trump's White House run last year, could fund campaigns to primary Republicans who backed the legislation. 'I assume that if he chooses somebody to primary, President Trump would probably take the opposite side, and in my district ... if I had that problem, I think President Trump would be a good person to come campaign in my district,' the Kentucky Republican said. Still, Guthrie emphasized Musk's 'good insights' on energy and AI and noted that lawmakers will need input from Silicon Valley and other technology companies on the topics. 'We're going to have federal guardrails, and it's good to have the input from those people, and we want that input, but we as members of Congress representing our districts have to take their input — what allows them to grow their companies, allows us to compete, allows us to win — [and] at the same time, protects the American people and their use of data and privacy,' he said.

Contract extension approved for West Aurora School District superintendent
The West Aurora School District 129 board recently approved a one-year extension of Superintendent Michael Smith's contract. 'Dr. Smith has the full support from the school board, as can be seen by the unanimous consent to extend his contract with the district another year,' West Aurora School District Board President Richard Kerns said in a response to questions from The Beacon-News. Smith had spent more than two decades with the district when the board selected him in November of 2022 to be the eventual replacement for Superintendent Jeff Craig, who retired June 30, 2024. Smith stepped into the role of superintendent once Craig retired. Kerns said that Smith made a 'smooth transition' and has done a 'great job of achieving' or making 'great progress' on goals that were established last year. Smith's contract was due to end on June 30, 2027, West Aurora Associate Superintendent of Operations Angie Smith said. The board's vote extends the contract to June 30, 2028. The superintendent's new extended employment agreement is for the years July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028. During the first year of the contract, the superintendent will receive compensation of $280,000, which includes the required contribution to the Teachers' Retirement System. His 4% salary increase for the 2025-26 school year under the agreement is the same as for the majority of the district's other administrators, Angie Smith said. The school board reviews the performance of a superintendent annually and decides when and for how long to extend the contract, she said. The board will discuss the superintendent's goals for the 2025-26 school year next month, West Aurora School District officials said.
