Tennessee State University names James Sexton as interim band director

Tennessee State University has named James Sexton as its new interim band director.
The historically Black, public university in Nashville announced the move in a May 6 news release. Sexton's new role is a promotion from his longtime position as assistant director of the Grammy-winning Aristocrat of Bands. Sexton said he counts it an honor to take on leadership of the marching band.
"I am committed to upholding its proud traditions while enhancing the dynamic performances that define the AOB," Sexton said in the release.

The university also named Dwight Pope as its new director of cheer and dance, where he will oversee the Sophisticated Ladies dance team.
"His extensive experience will be invaluable in guiding the continued success and elevation of TSU's dance program while continuing to elevate the cheer team," the release said.
The news comes after TSU interim President Dwayne Tucker removed previous band director Reggie McDonald from his position in January. Tucker said the school launched an investigation into McDonald's travel requestions and advances and his compliance with TSU policies and procedures. McDonald, who worked for TSU for 23 years, was ultimately fired from his role as band director but remains on administrative leave with full pay pending completion of due process for tenured faculty.
The news of Sexton and Pope's appointments was met with excitement by university leaders.
"Both the Aristocrat of Bands and TSU Sophisticated Ladies boasts a long and distinguished history of performances," Vice President for Student Affairs Bridgett Golman said in the release. "They are each a significant source of pride for Tennessee State University and the broader Nashville community."
A search for a permanent band director is underway. More information on the Aristocrat of Bands can be found at TNstate.edu/music/aristocrats.

Miley Cyrus Says She ‘Lost Everything' Because of Her Controversial ‘Bangerz'-Era Persona: ‘My Relationships Fell Apart'

Miley Cyrus' Bangerz era was pretty unforgettable, with the pop star repeatedly shocking the world through risqué outfits and provocative performances at a time when many still associated her with the squeaky-clean image of Disney Channel's Hannah Montana. But during a candid interview with Monica Lewinsky on her Reclaiming podcast posted Tuesday (June 10), the pop star revealed just how much the backlash affected her — and her relationships with her family — when it all went down circa 2013. 'That was the time where I just got hit so hard, and I was so embarrassed,' she said, referring to the criticism. More from Billboard Miley Cyrus Schools Monica Lewinsky on the Meaning of 'WAP' Quincy Jones Remembered by Lucky Daye, Luke James & Miles Caton With Smooth 2025 BET Awards Tribute Jamie Foxx Honored by Stevie Wonder & Reflects on Health Scare at BET Awards: 'You Can't Go Through Something Like That & Not Testify' 'There was even a time where my brother and sister didn't want to go to school, because of how humiliated they were to be related to me,' she continued. 'I had a lot of guilt about how hard it would've been to be my sibling or my parent, and how embarrassing.' Cyrus has five siblings, including half-sister Brandi, half-brothers Trace and Christopher, brother Braison and sister Noah. In addition to affecting the lives of her siblings, the Grammy winner said that the years surrounding the release of her Bangerz album also put a strain on her relationships with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus — 'It was really hard for me to go home and see my dad and look him in the eyes and not feel super embarrassed,' she noted — and her grandmother. She also said that she has since worked through the feelings of shame that lingered from that time period in therapy, but was very honest about how she 'lost everything' as a result of her risqué persona. 'If I kept dressing or acting a certain way, my relationships fell apart,' Cyrus said. 'No one wanted to date me, because they didn't want to be with a woman [whose] sexual expression part was not for them, it was like shared with the world.' 'I was engaged at the time,' she continued, referring to ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. 'That didn't work out, because I was sharing a part of myself that men wanted to be saved for them only.' Cyrus has come a long way since the events of 2013, the most memorable of which was arguably her parental-panic-inducing, half-nude performance alongside Robin Thicke at that year's MTV VMAs. Though Bangerz spawned her first-ever Billboard Hot 100 hit with 'Wrecking Ball,' she has since outdone herself with the eight-week chart reign of 'Flowers,' which also earned the singer her first-ever Grammys at the 2024 ceremony. Cyrus is now fresh off the release of her new album, Something Beautiful, which debuted this week at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. But while the criticism she faced more than a decade ago hurt in the moment, Cyrus says she now understands why it was so extreme. 'What I did wasn't shocking, it was who I was that was shocking,' pointing out that her past as the kid-friendly Hannah Montana character made her pivot feel even more disturbing to the public. To give an example, Cyrus pointed out that, in comparison, barely anyone batted an eye at Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's 'WAP' in 2021. 'But Cardi B isn't for kids,' the Black Mirror alum acknowledged. 'She's not a child star. For me it was hard to go, 'Why is Rihanna not in trouble?'' Watch Cyrus' full interview with Lewinsky above. Days Gone Developer Hit with Layoffs After Cancelling Live Service Game

According to a new report, , the PlayStation developer most known for its games Days Gone and Syphon Filter, has been hit by layoffs. This comes just a few months after cancelling a live-service game. This news comes from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier. In a post on BlueSky, Schreier reports that the studio is laying off 30% of its staff today. This adds up to around 40 employees at Bend Studio. He also confirms that the studio has started a new project following the recently canceled live-service project. 'Sony's Bend studio, which canceled a live-service game earlier this year, is laying off 30% of staff today (around 40 people), Bloomberg News has learned,' says Schreier in his post. 'The studio has been spinning up a new project following the cancelation.' Another BlueSky user named solidjaum replied to Schreier's post, asking if Bluepoint Games, another studio that recently canceled a live-service project, was impacted by layoffs. Schreier confirms it is not. Back in January, it was reported that both Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games had canceled live-service projects. This was due to the troubled launch of Concord, which was live for just two weeks before being shut down. Bluepoint Games was working on a God of War multiplayer game. Details about Bend Studio's project are not known. This is just one of many rounds of layoffs happening throughout the games industry. Back in February, PlayStation was reportedly hit with layoffs. More recently, EA saw mass layoffs in April, which reportedly saw 300 to 400 employees impacted. The last project Bend Studio released was Days Gone Remastered, a visually improved version made to take advantage of the technology of the PS5 and PS5 Pro. It is available now on the PS Store for $49.99. The post Days Gone Developer Hit with Layoffs After Cancelling Live Service Game – Report appeared first on PlayStation LifeStyle.

Masked Men Break Into Macklemore's Home, Bear-Spray Nanny While Kids Sleep

Masked Men Break Into Macklemore's Home, Bear-Spray Nanny While Kids Sleep originally appeared on Parade. Two masked men broke into rapper Macklemore's Seattle home over the weekend, deploying bear spray on a nanny and stealing thousands of dollars in valuables — all while his three children, whom he shares with wife Tricia Davis, were inside. According to a police report obtained by The Seattle Times, the home invasion occurred just before 1 a.m. Saturday at a Capitol Hill residence reportedly listed in public records as belonging to the Grammy-winning artist. Macklemore, whose legal name is Ben Haggerty, was not named in the redacted police report, but the outlet confirmed the address matched his voter registration. TMZ reported that the rapper was out of the country at the time, performing in Ireland. Seattle police were dispatched after the nanny reported that two intruders had entered the home, sprayed her with bear mace, and were still inside. According to the report, she had just put the children to bed when she saw two men enter through a patio door. One immediately sprayed her in the face with bear repellent. Despite the initial assault, the nanny told police that the man who sprayed her appeared 'fearful' and inexplicably began helping her rinse the bear spray from her eyes. The second suspect reportedly demanded valuables, shouting, "Where are the jewels, b--ch?" according to TMZ. The men then took jewelry, watches, and shoes before pushing her to the ground and taking her phone. In a separate incident report, the Seattle Police Department stated that 'thousands of dollars of items' were stolen from the home. The nanny told officers she bit one of the men before fleeing the house. She knocked on several neighbors' doors until one let her in to call 9-1-1. The suspects were later seen fleeing the scene, according to the police report. Thankfully, all three children were unharmed and were placed in the care of family members following the incident.
