Chalmers targets World final after new personal best
Alastair Chalmers says he is targeting the 400m hurdles final at the World Championships in Tokyo after running a personal reigning British champion, 25, clocked 48.30 secs in Germany on Sunday, breaking his previous best by 0.24 seconds. Chalmers narrowly missed out on the finals at the European Championships last summer before falling in the semi-finals at the Olympic Games in Chalmers finish in the top two at the forthcoming British Championships, he will be guaranteed a place in Tokyo, having achieved the qualifying standard."So much can happen between now and then, I've just got to stay healthy," he told BBC Radio Guernsey. "I think on the day in Tokyo if I can execute a really good race and I'm healthy and in good shape then there is a good chance I could make that final."It's going to be hard, but that's the whole point of competition, you've got to turn up on the day and give if your all and not mess up."Chalmers has won the last five British titles and is in the form of his life, having improved his best time year on year."Running the fastest time of your life is always a lovely feeling," he added."When I crossed the line I was just very happy that I'd run that world qualifier, personal best, I think it was a meet record as well."I'm just in a great place physically and mentally and it just allows me to go out and run quick on the track against some really high quality athletes."The World Championships in Japan will take place from 13-21 September.

Guernsey shooter Guillou wins two World Masters medals
Guernsey shooter Paul Guillou says winning a gold and a silver medal at the World Masters Games is one of his finest achievements in the multiple Island Games medallist won the Men's Over 60's 10m air pistol and was second in the 10m air rifle at the event in won team gold in the air rifle at the Island Games in 2023 as well as three silver medals and a bronze. "It definitely ranks well up there," he told BBC Radio Guernsey."It was the World Masters Games so I was up against people who had been potentially very, very good in their younger days."The person who won the rifle event had competed in a world event in 1994, so it was good to be able to rub shoulders with people who have been at that level."Guillou won the air pistol by two points but was 2.6 points off gold in the rifle only took up the sport at the age of 45, with his wife, but has become one of Guernsey's top marksmen over the past few years, representing the island at five Island Games going back to 2011. With shooting not being included in the programme of sports at this summer's Island Games in Orkney, Guillou said competing at the event in Taiwan - where there were more than 25,000 competitors across a range of sports - was a great chance to test himself. "I like to participate at a high level," he explained."I took part in the British Open in February, I didn't shoot as well as I wanted to, but I do like to compete at a the top level that I can."Given there was no shooting in the forthcoming Island Games, why not go to the World Games."
