‘Invention' Review: Patent Pensive
'Invention' is the sort of D.I.Y. project that's tough not to admire, even if its aims remain stubbornly private. This strange, personal movie is a mind meld between the experimental filmmaker Courtney Stephens ('Terra Femme') and the actress Callie Hernandez ('Alien: Covenant'). Stephens is credited as director, while the two share a 'film by' credit.
Hernandez plays a barely disguised version of herself, 'Carrie Fernandez,' who has just lost her father and is now contending with the logistics. The father character, inspired by Hernandez's own dad, trained as a doctor but later turned to hawking crackpot treatments. He also had a 'different' way of handling personal finances, an executor (James N. Kienitz Wilkins) tactfully reminds Carrie. For a start, he conducted business under multiple names.
Carrie's father has bequeathed her the patent for an 'electromagnetic healing device,' a contraption that we're told the Food and Drug Administration has left in legal limbo. Much of 'Invention' consists of scenes between Carrie and her father's associates as she weighs whether the machine was legit — and what to do about it even if it was. 'Did you ever use it?' she asks one of the investors (Tony Torn). 'Ah, no,' he replies. 'I got a stent.'
Video clips of Hernandez's real father pitching treatments on TV and theorizing on how 'cells are like your cellphone' are interspersed throughout. The dialogue and the imagery allude to transcendental writers. ('Invention' was shot on 16-millimeter film in Massachusetts.) Periodically, Stephens will cut to moments in which she and the actors break the fourth wall. Whether these meta elements should mean much to those who weren't involved may be beside the point. 'Invention' is committed to finding its own wavelength.

‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' Teases the Debut of Another Classic Villain
James Gunn talks about balancing the human and the alien in Superman. Predator: Killer of Killers shows off its brutal hunter in action. Plus, the Carrie TV series rounds out its cast. Spoilers, away! The Fantastic Four: First Steps During his recent appearance at CCXPMX 25 this past weekend (via Yahoo! Entertainment), Joseph Quinn revealed the Fantastic Four's very first villain, the Mole Man, makes an appearance in First Steps. We've got a lot of fantastic characters in there. There is also Mole Man, who is wonderful in it, but Galactus is the big bad. He's the big, evil, planet-gobbling space god…He's played brilliantly by the wonderful Ralph [Ineson]. And Silver Surfer, played by the brilliant Julia Garner. We were very lucky to work with her, she's excellent in the film. There are lots of brilliant characters in this film, that's for sure. Weapons During a recent interview with Empire Online, Zach Cregger described Weapons as a 'fun' and 'inviting' horror movie that will not be 'a grim, morose slog' like some of its contemporaries. [It's] a fun movie. It's funny, it's scary, it's inviting. It's not a grim, morose slog. And yet the story it tells is really fucked up. Superman Elsewhere, James Gunn compared Superman to Godzilla Minus One in a recent interview with the Japanese news outlet, Cinema Today. My goal was to make a film like Godzilla Minus One, which depicted Godzilla but also had great human drama. There is a human story at the root. Superman and the flying dog (Krypto) also appear in this film, but at its core is a human story. The relationship between Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and (villain) Lex Luthor is at the core of the work. I portray a character with optimism and hope that we associate with Superman, with goodness, kindness, compassion, and an attitude that values human life. However, the world he lives in is one in which these things are no longer as important as they used to be. There is some overlap with the real world we live in. 'Sirens' Is The Top TV Show On Netflix Right Now
'Sirens' is the top TV series on Netflix right now, according to the streamer's public ranking system. The dark comedy series features Julianne Moore as Michaela Kell, a mysterious socialite who lives a 'cult-ish life of luxury' at a 'lavish island estate,' the Netflix logline states. She hires Simone (Milly Alcock) who becomes obsessed with that rich lifestyle and forms a weird relationship with Michaela, so much so that her sister Devon (Meghann Fahy) decides to stage an intervention. The five-episode limited series, which debuted on May 22, has been called 'bizarre,' 'chaotic' and 'utterly addictive.' Kevin Bacon, Glenn Howerton, Felix Solis and Bill Camp also star in the series. All episodes are streaming on Prime Video. 'Criminal Minds: Evolution,' the follow-up series to 'Criminal Minds,' was a top performer on Paramount+ this week. The series began another season in May, with new episodes airing weekly on Thursdays. It follows the behavioral analysis unit of the FBI, which investigates a network of serial killers born out of the COVID-19 pandemic. The show stars Joe Mantegna, A.J.
