"Dropped catches, lower order not contributing cost us...": Shubman Gill reflects on India's defeat against England at Headingley
Leeds [UK], June 25 (ANI): Shubman Gill's tenure as India's new Test captain began with a promise but ended in disappointment as England pulled off a historic chase to win the first Test at Headingley by five wickets. Led by Ben Duckett's sensational 149, England chased down 371 in just 82 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
India started the match strongly, piling up 359/3 on Day 1, but a collapse on Day 2 saw them finish at 471. Despite centuries from Gill himself (147), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (in both innings), and KL Rahul, the visitors couldn't convert their dominance into a win.
Reflecting on the defeat, Gill acknowledged the team's shortcomings in key moments in the post-match presentation.
'A brilliant Test, we had our chances. Dropped catches, lower order not contributing cost us,' he said after the match.
India's second innings collapse on Day 4 saw them lose their last few wickets quickly, setting England a target that proved insufficient.
'Yesterday, we were thinking of giving them 430, but our last wickets fell for 25,' Gill noted.
'Even today, I thought we had our chances after the brilliant first wicket. Didn't go to hand,' he added.
He admitted that India's failure to capitalise on the first-innings advantage and lapses in the field proved costly.
'We spoke about the first-innings collapse. Happens, we have to rectify that going forward. Chances don't come easy on wickets like this, but we have a young team. Learning one. Hope to improve that,' he said.
Despite a disciplined bowling effort early on Day 5, the Indian attack couldn't sustain the pressure as the ball got older.
'The first session, we bowled spot-on. Didn't give away runs, but it's hard to stop runs once it gets old,' said Gill.
'Have to keep taking wickets when the ball got soft,' he added.
He also praised Ravindra Jadeja's performance with the ball. 'Jadeja bowled brilliantly, created chances'
When asked about managing the workload of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah during the series, Gill responded, 'It's decided game-by-game. Once we're close to the next game after a long break, we'll see.' (ANI)

Despite the presence of his coach Zelezny, who was the event director, the 27-year-old Indian was not at his peak performance. Chopra had missed the last two editions of the Golden Spike, an event his coach Zelezny won nine times during his illustrious career, due to fitness issues. He has had an impressive season, winning his first Diamond League title in two years in Paris after surpassing the elusive 90m mark during his second-place finish in the Doha DL in May. Chopra must be pleased to win the title at the Golden Spike, a venue where world record holder Zelezny excelled during his career. The Czech legend won nine titles between 1986 and 2006, often with 90m-plus throws, in this prestigious event first held in 1961. Chopra has competed in Ostrava before but not at the Golden Spike. He participated in the IAAF Continental Cup in 2018 as part of the Asia Pacific team and finished sixth with a throw of 80.24m. After his Paris DL win, Chopra emphasised the need to work on his core muscles for better control of his throws, admitting that his run-up may have been slightly too fast. Weber had defeated Chopra in the Doha DL on May 16 and the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial meet on May 23 in Poland, but the Indian surpassed him in Paris on June 20 with a first-round throw of 88.16m. Before Paris, Chopra's last DL title was in Lausanne in June 2023 with a throw of 87.66m. Chopra's next competition will be the NC Classic, which he is hosting in Bengaluru on July 5. Chandigarh: Tennis ball T-10 cricket league launched

The event saw the presence of former Indian pacer Yograj Singh, who is also the league commissioner, along with BCCI chief secretary Sunil Joshi. A player auction system will be introduced, with base prices starting at ₹ 25,000. He said that the league will be played in a T-10 format. It will feature 8 teams, each comprising 20 players — 14 from Punjab and 6 from other Indian states. Shubman Gill-led India were handed a tough 5-wicket loss by England in the first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Headingley, Leeds on Tuesday after the Ben Stokes' side chased down 371 for their second-highest run chase in Test history. The bowling attack — which looked toothless in the second innings after Jasprit Bumrah went wicketless — came under scrutiny after Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna failed to impress and were expensive with their wayward line and lengths. Krishna leaked 92 in 15 overs in the second innings at more than 6 an over. His numbers in the first innings aren't greater; the Purple Cap holder in the recently concluded Indian Premier League 2025 gave 128 runs in 20 overs. Although head coach Gautam Gambhir has come to the support of their bowlers and said the current bowling group is highly inexperienced but talented, they need to be backed. 'This bowling attack has one bowler with five Tests under his belt, one has four, one has played two and one hasn't yet debuted,' said Gambhir in the post-match presser. 'We will have to give them time. Earlier, we used to have four fast bowlers in the squad with an experience of more than 40 Tests. It doesn't make such a big impact in one-day or T20 matches, but when you go to Australia, England or South Africa for Tests, experience matters. These are early days. If we start judging our bowlers after every Test, how will be develop a bowling attack? Outside Bumrah and (Mohammad) Siraj, we don't have that much experience, but they have quality, which is why they are in this dressing room. But we have got to keep backing them because it's not about one tour. It's about building a fast-bowler battery that can serve India for long time in Test cricket,' he added. After fighting on equal footing for most of the first Test, Team India will be disappointed with this loss as it became the first team to lose a Test match after scoring five centuries in the history of cricket.
