Lionel Messi's Issue With Inter Miami Teammates Revealed

Lionel Messi's Issue With Inter Miami Teammates Revealed

Inter Miami CF's 4-1 victory against New York Red Bulls in MLS play last Saturday was a breath of fresh air after a crushing 5-1 CONCACAF Champions Cup defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps.
The bounce-back win appeared to be a huge relief for everyone in the squad — except captain Lionel Messi.

The Argentinian World Cup winner was in a good mood most of the match, most notably when he held off security to graciously allow a pitch invader to snap a photo with him. The Herons went up 3-0 in the first half, and Messi polished off the win when he got his goal in the 67th minute.
However, soccer is about much more than the scoreline. Messi left the pitch at Chase Stadium against New York looking far from satisfied.
In the buildup to IMCF's next MLS match against Minnesota United FC on Saturday, the source of his frustration has been revealed — a problem with his teammates.
Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano confirmed that for Messi, the standard of the team was not high enough in the 4-1 win.

"He's a competitive beast," Mascherano said of Messi's frustration against Red Bulls. "That's normal. We know his level of demand, not only with himself but with all around him.'

Former United States Men's National Team forward Hercules Gomez, who attended the match in Fort Lauderdale, added a layer of context on ESPN's "Futbol Americas."
"I was in the stadium for Inter Miami vs NYRB and Messi's frustration with his teammates was evident," Gomez wrote on X. "Things are quickly coming to a head."
"If (Messi) gives it to one of Messi's friends — (Jordi) Alba, (Sergio) Busquets, Luis Suarez — he knows there's the capacity to return that play to him," Gomez explained. "There's a little more purpose and effort to the run. A lot of times when he gives it to another player, he waits. Because he knows, that's probably not going to get there... You can see Messi frustrated."
Messi's frustrations are set to continue Saturday amid the absence of one of his "friends" that Gomez referenced, Suarez. The Uruguayan striker has been away from the team this week due to "personal reasons," and is not expected to play against Minnesota.

Messi and Suarez previously played together at FC Barcelona, as did Alba and Busquets. Suarez missing is a more direct issue for Messi, who plays next to him up top. Messi combines less frequently with Busquets, who sits deep in midfield, and Alba, who is deployed at left back. The Barcelona boys have assisted 13 of Messi's 25 MLS regular season goals for Inter Miami.
As long as Suarez is out, Messi will have to find comfort playing alongside the likes of Fafa Picault, Allen Obando, Benjamin Cremaschi and Telasco Segovia.
Every interaction will be under the microscope against the Loons as IMCF tries to build chemistry around the reigning MLS MVP at a crucial juncture in the 2025 campaign.

With ODI retirement, Glenn Maxwell signals complete exit from international cricket after 2026 T20 World Cup

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 2, 2025, 11:57 IST Australia's flamboyant allrounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals, and in doing so, has hinted at a complete international exit following the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup. Maxwell, who played 149 ODIs since his debut in 2012, confirmed that the 2027 ODI World Cup is not in his plans, leaving 2026 as the likely curtain call on his illustrious career. 'The 2027 World Cup feels out of reach,' Maxwell told The Final Word Podcast . 'I think it's time to let someone else make that spot their own. Hopefully they get enough time to do it.' The 36-year-old has been grappling with lingering physical challenges since his horrific leg injury in 2022, and recently also missed the IPL due to a finger fracture. His body, he admitted, has increasingly struggled to keep up with the demands of 50-over cricket. During the Champions Trophy earlier this year, Maxwell realised his limitations after a tough outing on wet and rock-hard outfields. 'It felt like I was just surviving out there, not performing. That's not the standard I want to set for the team,' he said. While he remains available for T20s and continues to feature in Australia's short-format plans, Maxwell's comments suggest he views the 2026 T20 World Cup—set to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka—as his final act on the international stage. With his ODI retirement, Maxwell joins a growing list of senior Australian players stepping away from the format, including Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, and David Warner. The reigning world champions now face a generational handover with several match-winners bowing out. Across 149 ODIs, Maxwell amassed 3,990 runs at a staggering strike rate of 126.70—the highest ever among batters with 2,000-plus runs. His tally includes four centuries and 23 fifties, highlighted by an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, regarded as one of the greatest knocks in ODI history. He also chipped in with 77 wickets and was renowned for his brilliance in the field. As one of Australia's most complete limited-overs cricketers, Maxwell's looming full retirement will mark the end of an era—one that lit up cricket with audacious stroke play, electric fielding, and an irreplaceable flair. Australia's two-time World Cup champion Glenn Maxwell retires from one-day international cricket

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Two-time World Cup champion Glenn Maxwell is retiring from one-day international cricket in a bid to play a role in Australia's push for a Twenty20 world title next year. Cricket Australia confirmed Maxwell's decision Monday. The 36-year-old Maxwell played 149 ODIs for Australia in an enduring career that is memorable for his unbeaten double-century in the 2023 World Cup, his unconventional shot-making and his brilliant fielding. Maxwell said the physical toll of the ODI game, which can take up to eight hours and be played on short turnarounds, was beginning to impact on his fielding ability and he didn't think he'd make it to the 2027 World Cup. 'I always said I wasn't going to hand my position over if I felt like I was still good enough to play. I didn't want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons,' Maxwell said. The Australian selectors 'are moving in such a clear direction,' he said, so the retirement confirmation 'gives them the best look at what the lineup is leading into that next World Cup. I know how important that planning is.' Australia's selection chairman George Bailey said Maxwell was one of the one-day game's most dynamic players and played a key role in two ODI World Cup titles. The shorter T20 format is still a good vehicle for Maxwell's rare talents. 'His level of natural talent and skill is remarkable. His energy in the field, under-rated ability with the ball and longevity has been superb,' Bailey said. 'What else stands out is his passion for and commitment to playing for Australia. 'Fortunately, he still has much to offer Australia in the T20 format.' ___ AP cricket:
