Brazilian police arrest members of gang created to kill and spy on lawmakers, judges

SAO PAULO (Reuters) -Brazil's Federal Police said on Wednesday it arrested five people suspected of being involved in a gang that was formed to kill and spy on lawmakers and high-ranking judges.
The gang was created by a military officer, as well as civilians, one source with knowledge of the investigation said.
A document seized by the police, and seen by Reuters, shows that the organization went by the name C4, in reference to its full name Command for hunting Communists, Corrupt people, and Criminals.
The document also showed the gang charged 250,000 reais ($44,000) to target high-ranking figures in the judiciary and 150,000 reais to target senators.
The organization was equipped with rifles and explosives and used prostitutes as bait, the document said.
It is unclear if any high-ranking Brazilian officials were harmed by the organization, but the investigation began after police started looking into the killing of a lawyer in the city of Cuiaba, in Mato Grosso state.
According to news website UOL, a retired colonel, imprisoned since last year for his alleged involvement in the lawyer's murder, was among those targeted in Wednesday's raid.
Federal Police officers also carried out six search and seizure warrants on Wednesday in three different states in Brazil as part of the probe.

And a recent chart, detailing how Matheus Cunha 'spent more time walking' than any other outfield player in the Premier League, is a perfect example of this misrepresentation. Match of the Day revealed the Wolverhampton Wanderers forward spent 77.1% of his season 'walking' – the highest in the league outside of goalkeepers, with four defenders making up the rest of the top five. Advertisement This chart blew up on social media given Cunha is set to join United this summer in a deal worth £62.5 million after an agreement was reached with the Brazilian international. It was described as evidence the club were welcoming another lazy player with a lackadaisical attitude to Old Trafford for big money; an illustration the Red Devils were not heeding lessons from the past. But the chart omits the fact that Cunha was one of only two players in the 'bottom ten' of the Premier League to reach the 20 mark for goals and assists, along with West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen. The 26-year-old forward finished the season with 15 goals and six assists without scoring a single penalty. Only five players scored more non-penalty goals than Cunha – Mohammed Salah, Alexander Isak, Erling Haaland, Yoanne Wissa, and Chris Wood. Advertisement The chart ignores Cunha produced these numbers while playing for one of the worst teams in the division, a side who flirted with relegation for much of the campaign before Vitor Pereira's arrival at Christmas. But, being fair, neither Cunha's attacking threat nor his place in a poor team (though this experience will prepare him well for a switch to Old Trafford) necessarily excuse a lazy attitude on the pitch. He can be an elite goal threat hindered by inferior teammates and still demonstrate a lethargy which could worry United fans. The issue is that this chart offers zero insight into what Cunha does for the remaining 22.9% of his time on the pitch. 'If you want explosiveness…' STATSports, an industry leading data analysis group in football, reveals Cunha ranks highly in comparison to his Wolves' teammates for 'explosive' statistics, dispelling the idea of laziness. Advertisement Amongst the senior squad at Molineux, Cunha ranks third for 'most sprint distance' and 'most sprints', while clocking in at second for 'percentage of his time spent sprinting (per 90).' The idea that the Brazilian spends the second most amount of time sprinting for his side while simultaneously spending the most amount of time walking out of any outfield Premier League player shows the issue with analysis statistics in isolation. The former paints the picture of a relentless player who simply does not stop running; the latter suggests a story of laziness and arrogance, a player who considers himself 'above' running off the ball such is his talent on it. As with every black and white story, the truth will lie somewhere in the grey. Advertisement Cunha is an explosive player in attack who can contribute much more in defence. This does not indicate an inherent issue with work-rate, rather the reality of a brilliant attacker playing for a team teetering on relegation. A player who believes he has outgrown his club will often struggle to find the motivation to run for every ball. A good example of this situation was Youri Tielemans at Leicester City who eventually moved to Aston Villa on a free transfer, despite excellent performances at the heart of the Foxes' midfield. Yet there were concerns over the Belgian's work-rate, most notably from Leicester fans themselves, and other clubs neglected to follow up their interest. But it has proven a revelatory signing for Villa with Tielemans arguably Unai Emery's most important player in the last two season. The 28-year-old midfielder was spurred on by arriving at a bigger club with better players and higher expectations; rather, he felt he was at home. It should prove a similar experience for Cunha who is believed to see Old Trafford as a dream move with a firm motivation to help turn the clubs fortunes around. Advertisement Ruben Amorim has repeatedly referenced the need for hard yards since arriving in Manchester n November. Working hard is a pre-requisite to play under the Portuguese coach, as Marcus Rashford can attest to from Birmingham. But Amorim has played a key role in identifying Cunha as a target and spoken with the forward over the role he will play for the Red Devils. If the former Sporting manager was in any worried by Cunha's tendency to walk, United would have walked away from the deal long ago. STATSports concludes their analysis of the Wolves Player of the Season by stating, 'If you want explosiveness, Cunha gives it to you.' Israel's actions in Gaza are genocide, says Ben & Jerry's
The independent board of Ben & Jerry's has claimed that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza in a move that threatens to further inflame tensions with its parent company Unilever. The ice cream brand, known for its outspoken approach to social issues, said: 'We join with those around the world who denounce the genocide in Gaza. 'We stand with all who raise their voices against genocide in Gaza – from petition-signers to street marchers to those risking arrest.' The independent board made the comments in a statement seen by Reuters. Its description of Israel's actions as genocide comes just weeks after one of the brand's co-founders, Ben Cohen, was arrested in the US Senate for protesting against the provision of military aid to Israel during testimony by Robert F Kennedy Jr, the US health secretary. The statement by the independent board threatens to deepen the disagreement between Ben & Jerry's and Unilever. The two sides have been at odds over Israel and Gaza for many months. The ice cream brand sued Unilever in November 2024, claiming that the company had attempted to block it from making public statements about the conflict. The two companies have clashed over Israel before, including in 2021 when Ben & Jerry's stopped selling its ice cream in the occupied West Bank, arguing that doing business there was 'inconsistent' with its values. In response, Unilever sold its Israeli ice cream business, causing a legal battle that was later resolved. Founded by Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in 1978 in Vermont, Ben & Jerry's has repeatedly spoken out on issues such as refugees' rights, LGBTQ+ issues and climate change. Though it has been owned by Unilever since 2000, an agreement was written into its $326m (£241m) acquisition deal to allow the company to continue operating with an independent board. This effectively protected the company's ability to take a stand on social issues. However, Ben & Jerry's has accused its owner of undermining that deal. In March, the brand accused Unilever of ousting Dave Stever, its chief executive, over his outspoken approach to political and social issues, rather than because of performance. Escalating tensions threaten to overshadow the much-anticipated spin-off of Unilever's ice cream arm into a separate business in an effort to streamline and focus on its core business of consumer goods such as Dove soap and Hellmann's mayonnaise. A Unilever spokesman said: 'We took notice of the comments made by members of the social mission board of Ben & Jerry's. 'Unilever supports efforts for a peaceful resolution and the end of violence to conflicts around the world. Unilever is in litigation with the above mentioned board and will not comment on its positions.' Ben & Jerry's and its founders were approached for comment.

Nigeria detains soldiers, police over weapons sales to armed groups
By Ope Adetayo ABUJA (Reuters) -The Nigerian military has detained over two dozen soldiers and members of the police force over sales of weapons from military stockpiles to armed groups, including Islamist insurgents, a spokesperson said. Africa's most populous country and biggest energy producer, Nigeria is battling insecurity on many fronts, including a long-running insurgency in the northeast and armed kidnapping gangs in the northwest. Captain Reuben Kovangiya, spokesperson for the military's anti-insurgency operation, said the arrests were part of a crackdown on racketeering involving ammunition. Local media reported that 18 soldiers, 15 policemen and eight civilians were taken into custody. "It is part of the counter-arms and ammunition racketeering operation conducted in every theatre of operations," Kovangiya told Reuters. "If any personnel engage in any act that is inimical to the system, they are arrested and tried." Kovangiya did not elaborate on the types and numbers of weapons sold but said the suspects would be prosecuted. Nigeria has this year experienced a surge in attacks by militants from Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province, who have overrun some military bases in the northeastern state of Borno. In the course of most of the raids, militants have seized weapons from army bases.
