Techday NZ28-04-2025

A new international technology conference, Rust Forge 2025, is set to be held in Wellington, targeting software developers from New Zealand and overseas.
Rust Forge 2025, established by Wellington local Tim McNamara, aims to challenge traditional industry norms and stimulate fresh thinking among participants.
Organisers expect around 200 tech developers to attend, with representation from companies such as Adobe, Rocket Lab, and Open Star. Delegates are anticipated from New Zealand, Australia, the United States and Europe.
The conference will take place at Shed 6 from 27-30 August 2025 and has received support from Business Events Wellington and WellingtonNZ.
The four-day event will include not just technical workshops, talks, and networking sessions, but also tours of Wellington and visits to key local sites, designed to give attendees a sense of the city and its place within the technology sector.
According to the organisers, Rust Forge seeks to create connections among changemakers and encourage a collaborative atmosphere within the tech community.
There are further plans to involve local tech organisations in a legacy initiative, extending invitations to students in the hope of encouraging more youth to consider careers in technology.
Tim McNamara, founder of Rust Forge and head of the Accelerant.dev consultancy based in Wellington, is known for his advocacy of the Rust programming language. McNamara maintains an active presence through a YouTube channel, a podcast, and international speaking engagements centred on Rust.
Business Events Wellington Manager, Irette Ferreira, commented on the importance of events like Rust Forge for the capital, saying, "Bringing conferences of this calibre to Wellington is about more than just the economic impact. It's about putting Wellington on the map as a centre for technology and innovation, and inspiring the next generation of leaders. Events like Rust Forge open doors for collaboration and foster the kind of creative problem-solving that is essential for our city's growth."
The conference's programming is structured to highlight environmental concerns as well as community building, with organisers describing Rust Forge as aiming to be "provocative and unconventional."
In preparation for Rust Forge 2025, the organisers have stated a commitment to celebrating both local talent and global expertise, fostering international exchange, and showcasing Wellington's capacity as an events destination for the technology sector.

Silverpush unveils AI tool for brand safety on TikTok ads

Silverpush has announced the launch of Silverpush Mirrors for TikTok, an AI-powered contextual intelligence solution designed to help brands plan, activate, and optimise brand-safe TikTok campaigns at scale. The new product is powered by Silverpush's contextual intelligence engine, which analyses the video-level environment of TikTok content. By processing and categorising ad groups based on a range of contextual signals, the solution seeks to deliver targeted campaigns to the most suitable audience at opportune moments. Among the key features of Silverpush Mirrors for TikTok are custom brand safety filters that go beyond TikTok's native solutions. Brands can utilise 21 advanced brand safety filters, maintain creator and video exclusion lists, block up to 10,000 negative keywords, and benefit from insight-backed safety informed by historical campaign data, providing them with greater flexibility and control over the content alongside which their advertisements are placed. Hitesh Chawla, Chief Executive Officer at Silverpush, said, "Silverpush is thrilled to bring our contextual intelligence technology to TikTok to help brands and agencies activate and automate TikTok ad campaigns based on contextual signals. By adding a layer of contextual intelligence to TikTok campaigns, brands can ensure more relevance and better performance across the funnel." The management of Silverpush Mirrors for TikTok takes place through the Silverpush Campaign Manager, the company's contextual intelligence platform. This platform analyses and activates context across different channels and devices, providing advertisers with a dashboard to measure detailed context-level insights. These insights enable users to understand the performance of various tactics and optimise campaigns with AI-driven recommendations. The platform additionally allows users to compare TikTok campaign insights with those gathered from YouTube and connected TV (CTV) campaigns, offering a unified perspective on performance and contextual analysis across multiple advertising channels. On the topic of campaign efficiency, Jeff Rich, Senior Vice President for the Americas, commented, "We've heard from many clients that campaign set-up is the most time-consuming day-to-day task when running multiple campaigns across different channels. By streamlining TikTok campaigns through Silverpush Campaign Manager, brands and agencies can automate bidding strategies and ad tactics, eliminating the time it takes to go-to-market and ensuring that every video ad is delivered with hyper-relevant context." Silverpush is positioning Mirrors for TikTok as a solution that addresses the complexities of managing large-scale campaigns, particularly for brands seeking to uphold brand safety while maximising performance on the TikTok platform. The addition of extensive customisation options and analytics is aimed at providing advertisers with more comprehensive control and insight into their ad delivery. The product launch reflects a broader move by digital advertising technology firms to offer advertisers greater transparency and control over where their commercials appear online. As concerns around brand safety and context continue to grow, such tools are becoming increasingly important for brands wishing to ensure their advertising is both effective and aligned with their intended audience. Silverpush's new offering will be monitored to determine its uptake among brands and agencies managing significant advertising campaigns on TikTok and other platforms. The company emphasises the integration of Mirrors for TikTok with its analytics dashboard, allowing clients to assess performance alongside YouTube and CTV initiatives within the same interface. How Current Affairs Podcasts Are Filling The Cracks In Mainstream News Reporting

According to the Pew Research Center, more than half of Americans used social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and X as news sources in 2024 despite the reported proliferation of misinformation and voter manipulation on these online sites. Meanwhile, another 2024 Pew Research Center survey found that 63 percent of American teenagers got their news from TikTok. The study also stated that in four years, the percentage of adults who regularly turned to TikTok for news increased by five times. 'With its short-form video content, TikTok provides the ideal platform for both misinformation and disinformation to pass as credible, in part because content creators' popularity may be misinterpreted as expertise, even where it doesn't exist,' a 2023 blog from Capital Technology University's website stated. In a 2024 article that documented waning public interest in cable news outlets like CNN and MSNBC, the libertarian magazine Reason noted that podcasts 'have gone the opposite direction' from short-form information blasts on platforms like TikTok and YouTube by offering 'lengthy, discursive interviews that let subjects speak uninterrupted for minutes at a time and conversations that flow more naturally—a near-impossibility in the tightly paced, commercial-bounded programming blocks of cable news programming.' Podcasts are increasingly becoming popular among Americans, with 'Comedy, entertainment, and politics… [being] at the top of the list of topics that podcast listeners say they regularly listen to,' according to a 2023 report by the Pew Research Center. The report further points out that those who turn to podcasts for news see them as more trusted sources than other platforms. 'You can't get into a topic and cover it in five minutes,' notes Deborah 'Arnie' Arnesen, the host of the public affairs podcast 'The Attitude with Arnie Arnesen.' She observes that podcasts allow deeper dives in a single episode and enable reporters to devote multiple episodes to one issue. 'Some things need to be repeated, looked at from different angles, and have different voices describing the same topic, because with each voice, you learn something more,' she says. 'It's that liberation, easy availability, and the license to drill down and realise that I can't just talk about this once and move on to a different topic, because this topic is like a hydra. It has so many heads. I think that is what is so exciting about [podcasts]: There are no parameters to what you do. The only parameters are whether people listen.' Public affairs podcasts like 'Worldly,' 'Intercepted,' and 'The Rest Is Politics' often explore single topics across numerous episodes, while 'The Daily,' 'Today in Focus,' and 'Today, Explained' do this more occasionally, concentrating mainly on the important news of the day. 'The Rest Is Politics' 'looks to debate in a civilised way, creating a bridge between the 'political divide' of [Britain's] Labour and Conservative [parties] so that meaningful conversations can be had about events of the week,' according to a 2022 article in the Oxford University newspaper, the Oxford Blue. Arnesen, whom New Hampshire Business Review in 2003 called 'a female liberal gadfly in a field dominated by such conservative male voices as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, and Michael Savage,' notes that current affairs podcasts can help listeners of differing political ideologies see eye to eye. For example, she says, 'No one is going to escape [Donald Trump's] chaos, his hurt, and the economic implosion [that his administration causes]. If someone isn't always politically aligned with you, but their hurt is the same, you can say, 'You should listen to this [podcast or radio show]. It might help you to understand why your family or community is suffering, why that job hasn't shown up, [or] why you can't access your social security.'' In contrast to left-leaning podcasts like 'Democracy Now!,' 'Pod Save America,' and 'The Ezra Klein Show,' programs like 'Left, Right & Center' and 'Breaking Points with Krystal and Saagar' present both left- and right-wing perspectives on public affairs. Arnesen feels that being exposed to diverse perspectives can help make us less 'cemented into our silos. I replaced Rush Limbaugh on five radio stations many, many years ago. You know what I learned from Rush? He never lied. He just cherry-picked and left out critical facts. I would say to my audience, 'Understand that's another reason for you to listen to [divergent viewpoints]. We all put everything through our lens, and our lens will only look at certain things. That doesn't mean we're lying to you, but it means that we might be missing something because we didn't look to the left or the right.'' She adds that podcasts complement traditional news outlets rather than replace them. 'This is synergistic,' she says. 'I just want to make sure you hear different voices coming from a different range of perspectives, because you never know when it will hit.' Arnesen describes podcasts as 'the interstices between the cracks. I see the mainstream media as bricks in a wall, but bricks can't be held together without cement. In a lot of ways, podcasts are that cement. They are what ultimately will hold us together because they're more liberated, can take more time, and can invest in what we need to know. The bricks can't, but [podcasts] can.' Author Bio: Damon Orion is a writer, journalist, musician, artist, and teacher in Santa Cruz, California. Newell Brands harnesses Adobe AI to boost content creation speed

Newell Brands has expanded its partnership with Adobe to integrate generative artificial intelligence (AI) solutions into its content supply chain. The collaboration sees Newell Brands utilising Adobe Firefly and Adobe Express, along with other Adobe tools, across its portfolio which includes brands such as Sharpie, Rubbermaid, and Yankee Candle. Efficiency gains Through the adoption of Adobe Firefly Services, Firefly Custom Models, and Adobe Express, Newell Brands has reported significant efficiency improvements in content production workflows. According to the company, the creation of Paper Mate packaging content accelerated by 75%, and the time required to generate social media assets for Oster products was reduced by 33%. This implementation is part of Newell Brands' broader omnichannel marketing and content strategy, which aims to enhance engagement with both consumers and retail partners across various platforms, including social media and e-commerce. Newell Brands has expanded its use of Adobe's enterprise content supply chain solutions, such as Adobe Workfront and Experience Manager, from campaign planning through to asset management and content production. Strategic partnership Melanie Huet, Co-CEO, Home & Commercial Segment at Newell Brands, detailed the company's rationale for expanding its partnership with Adobe. She said, "As part of our corporate strategy to win in the marketplace, we are investing in solutions that help us deliver superior brand communications. We wanted a partner who could help us connect the Newell Brands ecosystem thereby enabling faster, higher quality content creation that can be leveraged globally with ease." "We ultimately decided to expand our partnership with Adobe, a longtime trusted partner with best-in-class tools that can be used directly in our existing workflows. We leaned into Adobe to rebuild our content supply chain and integrate our marketing technology stack with a vision of delivering five times more content, unlocking significant efficiency gains and improving the effectiveness of our brand communications." Brent Rudewick, Vice President of Adobe GenStudio, commented on the demand for scalable content production solutions amid increasing global marketing needs. He said, "Businesses expect the demand for content to rise dramatically over the next few years, putting marketers and creatives under incredible pressure to deliver assets that support global marketing efforts and can drive customer engagement. As Newell Brands looks to expand its reach to new audiences, Adobe's AI-enabled enterprise solutions will empower the company to unify creativity and marketing, scaling the production of standout content that anchors impactful customer experiences." AI-driven production By deploying Adobe's generative AI offerings such as Firefly Services and Firefly Custom Models, Newell Brands can automate and streamline repetitive tasks including resizing content for different digital channels and adapting backgrounds for various regions and campaigns. These services also allow the company to train the generative AI models on their own proprietary assets, maintaining consistency and adherence to brand guidelines across teams. Specifically, the use of Firefly Custom Models in the production of Paper Mate packaging resulted in a 75% increase in speed for content creation, significantly reducing time to market. The firm expects to deliver thousands of additional creative assets annually by optimising these processes. Expanding content creation capabilities Newell Brands is also rolling out Adobe Express across its marketing and creative departments. Adobe Express provides templates and tools for easy content creation while ensuring compliance with brand guidelines defined by Newell's creative teams. The platform incorporates generative AI features, allowing users to produce assets that are both on-brand and secure for commercial purposes. In the Latin American market, the deployment of Adobe Express allowed the Newell team to create a style guide featuring approved logos, colours, fonts and templates. This led to a 33% reduction in the time needed for producing Oster social content, equating to the production of 52 assets in 8 hours rather than 12 hours previously. Workflow integration These Adobe services build on Newell Brands' continued use of Adobe Workfront for managing campaign planning and production assignments, as well as Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Assets for overseeing the company's digital asset library. Together, these platforms allow Newell Brands to efficiently govern, activate and deliver content across a wide array of digital channels such as websites and mobile applications. By integrating these solutions, the company aims to respond with greater agility to shifting market requirements and consumer preferences for engaging and relevant content.
