"To this day, I can't look him in the eye" - Pat Riley still feels bad about failing to help Patrick Ewing win an NBA title
In a heartfelt reflection, Pat Riley openly shared his deepest regret from his tenure as head coach of the New York Knicks. Years have passed, but the memories of the 1994 NBA Finals continue to weigh heavily on his mind, leading the legendary coach to hold himself accountable for the team's disappointing performance during that pivotal series.
Riley's sentiments are particularly focused on Knicks center Patrick Ewing, whose relentless dedication and hard work during that season left a lasting impression on him. He recognized the immense effort "Big Pat" invested in striving for an NBA championship, yet the legendary coach felt he fell short in providing the support necessary for Ewing to achieve that dream.

"The New York Knicks came after 'Showtime,' but it was one of my all-time favorite teams," Riley opened up in an interview with Andscape in 2017. "Those four years with those guys, led by Patrick, I loved that."
"The biggest disappointment in my career was losing the [1994 NBA] championship. I let him down," he confided. "I let him down. I didn't do enough. I could've made a couple of different moves. [Riley regrets not using a fresh Rolando Blackman in Game 7 to spell John Starks, who shot 2-for-18 against Houston.] I could have gotten him better shots. To this day, I can't look him in the eye."
Riley believed Ewing gave it all he got in '94
It is common knowledge in the NBA that "The Godfather" was deeply committed to fostering a culture of teamwork and determination in his coaching philosophy. It was also what defined his coaching stint in New York. Among all the players of the Knicks in the '90s, he acknowledged that it was Ewing who truly exemplified the spirit of giving everything he had on the court.

For Riley, there is no greater way to reward Ewing's relentless effort and dedication than by guiding him to an NBA championship title. Sadly, despite their shared aspirations and hard work, Riley could not achieve this ultimate goal for his star big man during his tenure with the team.
"Patrick was a guy that gave everything he could give to that city to try to win a championship," said Riley in a separate discussion. "It's probably one of the biggest disappointments I had in my life not being able to give them enough in Games 6 and 7 when we were in Houston so that Patrick could've gotten his first championship."

A true Knicks icon
Despite never clinching an NBA championship with the Knicks, the former Hoya remains a cherished figure among the loyal fans of Madison Square Garden. His extraordinary blend of skills and strength are only matched by the unwavering grit and passion he displayed as the heart and soul of the Knicks.

Today, Ewing is celebrated as a legendary Knicks player and an iconic leader who left an indelible mark on the franchise. Every now and then, avid "Big Apple" fans fondly remember his contributions, recognizing the dedication and perseverance he brought to every game during his time with the team. His legacy continues to influence the current Knickerbockers team and fans as a beloved symbol of the team's rich history.

Pete Alonso closing in on Mets home run record
DENVER (AP) — When he re-signed with the New York Mets last winter, Pete Alonso saw an opportunity to become the team's career leader in home runs and multihomer games. He checked one record off his list Sunday with a pair of two-run shots in a 13-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies — and the burly first baseman is closing in on the other. Advertisement Alonso's 23rd multihomer game broke a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion now has 243 career homers, passing David Wright (242) for second place on the franchise list — nine behind Strawberry. 'Honestly, it's just one of those things where I can't really be too involved in it,' Alonso said. 'For me, I just want to win. Whatever happens, capitalize on certain pitches in the zone, then I'll get my chance to do so by helping my team win. That's always been the focus.' Alonso hit two of New York's season-high six homers to help complete a 5-2 trip. He has six home runs and two multihomer games in June after going deep just four times in 27 games in May. He went 5 for 14 during the weekend series and has raised his batting average from .288 to .301 over the last eight games. 'There's a lot to like about his bat right now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Just dominating pitches in the strike zone. That's who he is. We know that the power's always been there, but now we're looking at a really good hitter.' Advertisement Alonso wasn't the only Mets player with a banner day. Juan Soto had three hits and walked three times to reach base in all six plate appearances. He became the first New York player to accomplish that feat since Alonso on Aug. 15, 2019, at Atlanta. 'It's not easy to do at the big league level,' Mendoza said. 'You get six times at the plate and you find a way to get on base. Finally getting results, but I feel the at-bat quality has been there.' Alonso's path toward becoming the Mets' career home run leader began when he set the major league record for rookies with 53 in 2019. He has hit at least 34 homers in each of his five full big league seasons and is on pace for 41 this year. Advertisement 'Pete's been pretty incredible this year. He's been locked in every single at-bat,' said teammate Jeff McNeil, who also hit two home runs Sunday. 'Seems like big situations he's going to do some damage. 'It's fun to watch and I feel like he's putting on a show every time he's at the ballpark.' ___ AP MLB: Michael Kelly, The Associated Press

Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot tears ACL, will miss rest of 2025 season
Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season after suffering a torn ACL in her right knee during Chicago's eventual 27-point loss to the Indiana Fever, the team announced Sunday. Vandersloot sustained the injury at the 5:29 mark of the first quarter of Saturday night's loss to Indiana while driving to the basket. Teammates gathered around her on the court as she lay on the floor in pain, and Vandersloot was eventually carried to the locker room before quickly being ruled out for the remainder of the contest. Advertisement 'It's heartbreaking,' Sky rookie guard Hailey Van Lith said after Chicago's loss. 'She's our engine,' coach Tyler Marsh added. 'She's our captain and our leader out there, so obviously, it's a huge blow.' Angel Reese, the second-year forward from LSU, posted her reaction on X. 🙏🏽 — Angel Reese (@Reese10Angel) June 8, 2025 Vandersloot, 36, was the No. 3 pick of the Sky in 2011 and spent the first 12 years of her career with the franchise, leading Chicago to its first championship in 2021. She played the 2023 and 2024 seasons with the New York Liberty, where she won the 2024 title, before returning to the Sky on a one-year deal this past offseason. 'We're thinking of her,' Liberty coach Sandy Brondello told reporters on Sunday. 'She's playing great. She's the leader out there.' Heading into this season, Vandersloot had already been Chicago's all-time assists leader, and she became the franchise's all-time leading scorer in late May, passing her wife, and fellow former Sky guard, Allie Quigley on the Sky's scoring list. Vandersloot started the first seven games of Chicago's season, averaging 10.6 points and 5.3 assists. Her injury will likely thrust Van Lith, the No. 11 pick in April's draft, into the Sky's starting lineup. Van Lith replaced Vandersloot after the injury occurred and played a career-high 26 minutes in Saturday's loss, which was the first WNBA game at the United Center. The Sky will also likely lean more on guards Ariel Atkins and Rachel Banham as they look to proceed and draw the most out of their developing frontcourt of Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese. Their first test without Vandersloot comes Tuesday, against her former team, as the Sky travel to Brooklyn to play the Liberty.
