NEW DELHI : Indian airline IndiGo said today it had signed an order for 30 more Airbus A350-900s, bringing its shopping list for the widebody aircraft from the European aircraft manufacturer to 60.
'We are placing a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s,' said Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo, a company founded in 2006 and already behind the largest contract by volume in the history of civil aviation – 500 Airbus single-aisle aircraft by 2023.
The Indian low-cost carrier, the country's biggest by market share, is positioning itself as a significant player in the long-haul market.
'This strategic move will enable IndiGo to spread its wings further and expand its long-haul international network', the company said in a statement.
'This is yet another step in defining the airline's long-term plans of international expansion'.
The A350 planes, with ranges of up to 15,000km, will allow it to further expand its network.
Overall, IndiGo has placed orders for around 1,000 aircraft from the A320 family, Airbus's most successful model and rival of the Boeing 737 MAX, which has endured multiple setbacks after a series of safety scares.
Willie Walsh, director-general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which began its annual industry conference in New Delhi today, said 'the development of India's air connectivity in recent years has been nothing short of phenomenal'.
Indian domestic air growth is 'running at over 10%' per year, Walsh said, ahead of the conference.
The growth of its economy has made India and its 1.4 billion people the world's fourth-largest air market – domestic and international – with IATA projecting it will become the third biggest within the decade.
Last year, India's domestic air passenger traffic reached a 'historic milestone, surpassing 500,000 passengers in a single day', according to India's ministry of civil aviation.
The ministry boasts of a sector 'experiencing a meteoric rise'.
Railways remain hugely popular but travelling by trains crisscrossing a country about three-quarters the area of the European Union is often slow and chaotic.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is slated to address IATA delegates tomorrow, has made the development of the air sector a priority since coming to power in 2014.
India has doubled its number of airports in the past decade to 157, with plans to have as many as 400 by 2047.

Asian markets rise as traders eye possible Trump-Xi talks
HONG KONG, June 3 — Asian stocks rallied Tuesday as investors kept tabs on developments in the China-US trade war amid speculation the countries' leaders will hold talks soon. After a period of relative calm on the tariff front, Donald Trump at the weekend accused Beijing of violating last month's deal to slash huge tit-for-tat levies and threatened to double tolls on steel and aluminium. The moves jolted Asian markets on Monday, but hopes that the US president will speak with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping — possibly this week — has given investors some hope for a positive outcome. Meanwhile, oil prices extended Monday's surge on a weak dollar and Ukraine's strike on Russian bombers parked deep inside the country that stoked geopolitical concerns as well as stuttering US-Iran nuclear talks. Trump has expressed confidence that a talk with Xi could ease trade tensions, even after his latest volley against the Asian superpower threatened their weeks-old tariff truce. 'They violated a big part of the agreement we made,' he said Friday. 'But I'm sure that I'll speak to President Xi, and hopefully we'll work that out.' It is unclear if Xi is keen on a conversation — the last known call between them was in the days before Trump's inauguration in January — but the US president's economic adviser Kevin Hassett signalled on Sunday that officials were anticipating something this week. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent — who last week warned negotiations with China were 'a bit stalled' — said at the weekend the leaders could speak 'very soon'. Officials from both sides are set for talks on the sidelines of an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) ministerial meeting in Paris on Wednesday. While there has been no movement on the issue, investors took the opportunity on Tuesday to pick up recently sold shares. Hong Kong gained more than one per cent while Shanghai returned from a long weekend on the front foot. There were also gains in Tokyo, Sydney, Wellington, Singapore, Taipei and Manila. Seoul was closed for a presidential election. Deals queued up? The advances followed a positive day on Wall Street led by tech giants in the wake of a forecast-beating earnings report from chip titan Nvidia. Still, National Australia Bank's Rodrigo Catril remained nervous after Trump's latest salvos. 'The lift in tariffs is creating another layer of uncertainty and tension,' he wrote in a commentary. 'European articles suggest the lift in tariffs doesn't bode well for negotiations with the region (and) UK steelmakers call Trump doubling tariffs 'another body blow',' he added. 'The steel and aluminium tariffs also apply to Canada, so they will likely elicit some form of retaliation from there and while US-China trade negotiations are deteriorating due to rare earth, student visas and tech restrictions, steel tariffs will also affect China.' Separately, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Monday voiced optimism for a trade deal with India 'in the not too distant future', adding that he was 'very optimistic'. And Japanese trade point man Ryosei Akazawa is eyeing another trip to Washington for more negotiations amid speculation of a deal as early as this month. Also in focus is Trump's signature 'big, beautiful bill' that is headlined by tax cuts slated to add up to US$3 trillion (RM12.7 trillion) to the nation's debt. Senators have started weeks of what is certain to be fierce debate over the mammoth policy package, which partially covers an extension of Trump's 2017 tax relief through budget cuts projected to strip health care from millions of low-income Americans. Oil prices extended Monday's surge that saw West Texas Intermediate briefly jump five per cent on concerns about an escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and suggestions Washington could hit Moscow with stricter sanctions. That compounded news that the Opec+ producers' grouping had agreed a smaller-than-expected increase in crude production. Traders were also monitoring tensions over Iran's nuclear programme after Tehran said it would not accept an agreement that deprives it of what it calls 'peaceful activities'. — AFP

4th title beckons but tough road awaits Aaron-Wooi Yik in Jakarta
World No 3 men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik credit their recent successes to their new coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi. (Instagram pic) PETALING JAYA : A breath of fresh air seems to have permeated the Malaysian badminton scene recently, thanks to some superb performances by the men's doubles pairs. At the forefront of this is world No 3 pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who have already created a personal record of winning three titles in a year – the Badminton Asia Championships in April, the Thailand Open in May, and the Singapore Open on Sunday. Hot on their heels and showing lots of promise are world No 7 pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who have won two titles this year – the Indonesian Masters in January, and the Malaysia Masters last month, where they defeated Aaron-Wooi Yik in the final. As for world No 2 pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, there have been some disappointments this season after they won the India Open in January. They were eliminated in the early rounds in most of the other tournaments. They had done well before this, winning three titles in 2023, and another three last year. At the centre of these improved performances appears to be the new Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) doubles coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi, who had engineered Indonesia's success in the men's doubles pairs previously. Aaron-Wooi Yik were quick to credit their recent successes to their new coach, also known as the 'Fire Dragon' back home, saying he had polished their game leading to their consistent performances. The question in the minds of Malaysian badminton fans is whether the duo, who are currently in top form, can go on to make it four titles in a year by winning the Indonesia Open, which starts today. Tough draw and venue While their current form and a great coach can work in their favour, the Indonesia Open's draw is expected to present them with some of their biggest obstacles. Drawn in the top half of the World Tour 1000 series, the Malaysians are likely to face three strong pairs before they even reach the semi-finals. In their opening tie, Aaron-Wooi Yik will have to face Denmark's world No 16 pair Frederik Sogaard-Rasmus Kjaer, whom they defeated 21-19, 24-22 at the Malaysia Masters. En route to the semi-finals, they could meet former world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi of Japan, and India's Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy. Aaron-Wooi Yik could also face compatriots Wei Chong-Kai Wun and home pair Leo Rolly Carmando-Bagus Maulana. Former national player and coach James Selvaraj pointed out that Aaron-Wooi Yik have beaten these pairs several times, and that devising the right strategies with their coach would be key. While the Indonesia Open's venue – the Istora Stadium in Jakarta – has been known to be especially unfriendly to Malaysian players, Selvaraj said Aaron-Wooi Yik have grown in mental strength in recent tournaments, even making comebacks from the brink of defeat. 'Many Malaysian players seemed to have lacked this in the past but this quality is now being displayed by Aaron-Wooi Yik and Wei Chong-Kai Wun. 'This augurs well for a possible fourth title in a year for Aaron-Wooi Yik,' he told FMT. Selvaraj added that overall consistency, which was lacking in the past, seems to be showing in these two pairs. 'Let's root for them to do it again.' At last year's Indonesia Open, Aaron-Wooi Yik were knocked out in the second round, while Wei Chong-Kai Wun were runners-up. The Indonesian Open offers total prize money of US$1.45 million. In the doubles events, the champions will pocket US$107,000 while the runners-up take home US$50,750.
