John Tonje scores 31 to carry No. 11 Wisconsin past Illinois
February 19 - John Tonje scored 31 points and Steven Crowl added 20 as No. 11 Wisconsin won its fifth straight and also ended a nine-game losing streak against Illinois with a 95-74 Big Ten victory Tuesday night in Madison, Wis.
John Blackwell added 16 points for Wisconsin (21-5, 11-4 Big Ten), which had not beaten the Illini in exactly six years, a 64-58 win at home on Feb. 18, 2019.
Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn had 17 points and Ben Humrichous added 13 for Illinois (17-10, 9-8). Freshman guard Kasparas Jakucionis, who entered averaging a team-high 16.0 points per game, was held to just six points.
Early in the second half, Gibbs-Lawhorn hit a 3-pointer to make it a two-possession game at 50-45, but Wisconsin boosted the margin to 64-53 on a three-point play by Tonje.
The Badgers hit six of eight shots over a six-minute stretch, extending the lead to 84-67 on Crowl's open lay-in underneath with just over five minutes remaining.
Blackwell's 3-pointer put the Badgers up 91-72 with 2:22 left.
Tonje hit 9 of 15 shots, including 3 of 5 from deep, and 10 of 12 from the foul line. Wisconsin shot 52.3 percent, including 10 of 24 from 3-point range (41.7 percent).
The Badgers also had a dominating 48-28 edge on points in the paint.
Wisconsin capitalized on illness and injury for a 39-30 advantage on the boards over the Illini, No. 2 in the country in rebound margin at 10 per game.
Illinois center Tomislav Ivisic, who has been battling the flu, did not start, and had just seven points and three rebounds in 21 minutes. Illini freshman forward Morez Johnson Jr., second with 6.6 boards per game, broke his wrist in a 79-65 loss to Michigan State on Saturday.
Nolan Winter had a game-high eight rebounds for Wisconsin, and Crowl pulled down seven.
Wisconsin went in front 29-17 with 7 1/2 minutes left in the first half when Max Klesmit's 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run.
Xavier Amos' 3-pointer put the Badgers up 45-35, but the Illini closed the half with a 6-2 run.

Garcia's cause of death has not yet been announced, but an obituary shared by the Green Bay Press Gazette described his passing as 'sudden.' He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jill, as well as two daughters, Susan and Katherine, and a grandson, Oscar. On social media, tributes immediately began to pour in for the ex-NFL player, with many writing: 'Legend!'

The Green Bay Packers are parting ways with Jaire Alexander, despite their quarterback's desperate plea, according to reports. The Packers are releasing the cornerback after an offseason of uncertainty sparked by two injury-plagued seasons for the 28-year-old. The franchise and player had agreed to explore a potential trade earlier in the offseason, according to Ian Rapoport. After failing to clinch a way out of Green Bay before the NFL Draft in April, the two parties reportedly also discussed a restructured contract. However, with neither option emerging, the Packers and Alexander move on with a clean break. Alexander played just seven of the team's 17 regular season games last season amid multiple injury woes. Over the past two years he's managed to suit up for just 16 of of the Packers' 36 games, including the playoffs, while in the last four years he's missed half of the franchise's regular-season games. Yet, despite his multiple stints on the sidelines, quarterback Jordan Love recently insisted that Alexander was essential to the team. 'He's definitely a player we need back,' Love told Kay Adams said when asked about the All-Pro cornerback back in April. 'He's a guy we need around,' he added during his appearance on FanDuel's 'Up & Adams Show'. 'Locker room, he's a character. That's a guy you never know what you're going to get. With Ja, he's always a guy that interacts with everybody on the team. He jokes around but he also has that serious side to him as a competitor.' Alexander, who was selected by the Packers in the first round in 2018, signed a four-year contract extension with Green Bay in 2022 with two years remaining on the $84 million deal. With Alexander owed $17.5million for the upcoming seasons, it proved tough for the Packers to seal a trade, particularly amid his injury woes. When healthy, Alexander is one of the most impactful cornerbacks in the league, having earned Pro Bowl nods twice. He is also a two-time second-team All-Pro in 2020 and 2021. He has 240 tackles, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 12 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown this past season, and 70 passes defended in his seven-year NFL career.

June 9 - Packers center Elgton Jenkins plans to attend mandatory minicamp in Green Bay, although participation is an entirely different story, according to multiple reports Monday. Seeking an adjusted contract to reflect the current market for his new position, Jenkins has been distant from the team since the start of the offseason. He's moving from guard to center and while he said last season he's amenable to a move, he wants to be paid for his versatility after logging important snaps at tackle and guard in previous seasons. Jenkins has two years remaining on a four-year, $68 million contract signed in 2022, but none of it is guaranteed. NFL Network reported Monday it's unlikely Jenkins will practice without financial guarantees for injury in his contract. Packers offensive coordinator Andy Stenavich said after the draft Jenkins was on board with the position switch, but ESPN reported Jenkins wants the security of guarantees or a new deal to make the move. At an average annual salary of $17 million per year, Jenkins' current deal would make him the second-highest-paid center in the NFL -- tied with Cam Jurgens (Eagles) -- behind only Chiefs All-Pro Creed Humphrey ($18 million). Jenkins turns 30 in December and bumps inside to make room for free agent addition Aaron Banks to play left guard. The Packers also selected Anthony Belton (54th overall) and seventh-rounder John Williams in their 2025 draft class. Jenkins was a second-round pick in 2019 and played center in college. General manager Brian Gutekunst has shown little interest in extending contracts for players with more than one season left on an existing contract.
