‘Total confinement': Dozens of dogs found crammed into cabinets, cupboards in NYC apartment

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. (WJW) — Dozens of dogs were discovered stuffed inside cabinets and cupboards and crammed into tight spaces inside a New York City apartment.

Animal Care Centers of NYC posted a news release to Facebook on May 9 stating that 40 Belgian Malinois dogs were living in 'filthy, overcrowded conditions,' and many had no access to fresh air or sunlight.
According to the organization, many of the dogs, including puppies and full grown adults, had likely never stepped foot outside.
'These dogs have reportedly lived in total confinement for their entire lives,' Tara Mercado, ACC's director of behavior and shelter operations, said. 'We found full-grown Malinois hidden in cabinets and crammed behind furniture.'
Fully grown Malinois males can weigh up to 80 pounds while females can reach up to 60 pounds, according to the American Kennel Club. The breed is known for its intelligence, energy and need for stimulation.
The dogs were swiftly removed from the apartment and taken to a shelter to be evaluated. Most of the rescued animals are described as 'extremely fearful' and 'undersocialized,' the news release said.
'They've likely never touched grass, walked on a leash, or met a stranger,' said Dr. Biana Tamimi, ACC's director of shelter medicine. 'Every new sound, every human interaction, is overwhelming. But we're already seeing glimmers of curiosity — and that gives us hope.'

The dogs are not currently available for adoption and will need long-term behavioral support, the organization said.
An investigation into the incident is underway.

An orphaned black bear cub that defied the odds and 'survived a very cold winter alone' in upstate New York quickly 'packed on the pounds' and returned to the wild, video shows. 'He looked back to say 'thank you!'' someone said in the comments. The cub hesitates before bounding off into the forest as someone off camera chuckles. 'I am crying,' someone said in the comments. 'It takes a big wide wild village.' The video also shows the release of another bear that the organization referred to as the Margaretville bear. 'She was spotted late last year as it was getting cold,' the organization said in the post. 'After two weeks of being seen running around looking for food in Margaretville, she was finally captured by Michael our long time volunteer. These two bears were extremely (underweight) when found & we are thrilled to say they made a great recovery. Let Wild Be Wild!' That bear took off into the forest with no hesitation, video shows. In a video shared shortly before the organization released the Hunter Mountain bear, four of the cubs are seen playing together in their enclosure. 'Just in case anyone was wondering what happens when you put 4 orphaned cubs in a 4x8 room,' the organization said in a May 3 post. 'If you guessed chaos you would be correct.' Video shows the cubs running around the enclosure, climbing up and down and then tumbling off a log. Several of the remaining cubs were released or will be released soon, according to posts from the organization and from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

Very rare 300-year-old artifacts found under monastery floor in Poland. See them
In a city of eastern Poland, a team got to work renovating a historic monastery. As part of the project, they removed the old wooden flooring — and uncovered some very rare 300-year-old artifacts. A team of archaeologists began renovating the former Basilian monastery in Chełm in 2024, a project that's both research and construction, the Lublin Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments said in a June 5 Facebook post. Recently, workers removed the flooring on the first level and found hundreds of discarded items underneath used to fill in the ground, officials said. Archaeologists identified some of these fragments as very rare pieces of heraldic slab tiles. The 300-year-old tiles were custom-made for the monastery's stove and had a personalized design, officials said. Photos show two of the glazed green and brown tiles. At the center of the tiles is a coat of arms, identified by archaeologists as the emblem of Józef Lewicki, the Uniate bishop of Chełm from 1711 to 1730. Several initials, such as an 'I,' 'L' and 'CH,' were also linked to Lewicki. The rest of the design includes hanging bell-like figures, ribbons and a tool-like item, photos show. Culture officials described the artifacts as sensational and a discovery like no other. Archaeologists plan to inventory the tile fragments, reconstruct as many as possible and continue studying the finds. The historic monastery in Chełm is currently part of the campus of the Marian Sanctuary on Chełmska Mountain and used for residential purposes, according to the church. Chełm is a roughly 150-mile drive southeast from Warsaw and near the border with Ukraine and Belarus. ‘Explosion' reported during fire at Hamer Pellet plant in Elkins
ELKINS, (WBOY) — Fire departments from several counties responded after a fire broke out in the Elkins Industrial Park on Wednesday. The fire was reported just before 4 p.m. at Hamer Pellet Fuel Co. plant. First responders said that there was heavy smoke when they arrived, and additional agencies were called to assist, according to a press release from the City of Elkins. No injuries or entrapments were reported from the fire, but the city said that an EMS unit did report an explosion during firefighting operations. The fire was extinguished before 8 p.m., the release said. Harrison County house catches fire for second time this year Preliminary investigation suggests that the cause of the fire was electrical, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal is leading an official investigation. Fire departments from Elkins, Beverly, Belington, Buckhannon and Coalton assisted in fighting the fire and engine transfer, and the Elkins Police Department, Randolph County Sheriff's Office, Randolph County Emergency Squad and West Virginia State Police provided additional support, the release said.
