Ronaldo fires Portugal past Germany and into Nations League final

Cristiano Ronaldo scored again as Portugal came from behind to beat Germany 2-1 in their Nations League semifinal on Wednesday. The 40-year-old Ronaldo captained Portugal and scored his 137th international goal five minutes after substitute Francisco Conceição equalised with a blistering shot in the 63rd. Ronaldo became the oldest player to ever score against Germany while ending his 'curse' against the country. The former Real Madrid star lost each of the previous five games he played against Germany. Liverpool target Florian Wirtz had given the home team a 48th-minute lead with a perfectly placed header inside the right post, but Portugal coach Roberto Martínez made his changes count as he brought on Conceicao and Champions League winner Vitinha among the substitutes. Vitinha excelled as Portugal finished the game in the ascendancy just four days after he helped Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) win the Champions League final against Inter Milan in the same stadium on Saturday. Germany needed goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen at his best to prevent the visitors from scoring any more. PSG wing-backs Joao Neves and Nuno Mendes both started for Portugal, while Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade started for his Germany debut. Conceicao only needed five minutes to make a mark with a brilliant long-range strike inside the far post after he surged past Robin Gosens like he was not there. Mendes gave Ronaldo a simple finish five minutes after that. 'It could have been more,' Mendes said. The match was delayed by 10 minutes due to 'adverse weather conditions' in Munich. Earlier in the day, UEFA warned matchgoers of possible thunderstorms in the Bavarian capital forecast for kickoff time. About an hour before the originally scheduled kickoff time of 9pm, a storm swept across northern Munich, lashing the stadium with rain and leaving the arena grass carpeted in hailstones. Goalkepers from both sides had begun their warm-up when the storm hit. France plays Spain in Stuttgart on Thursday in the other semifinal.

La Fuente praises Spain's ambition ahead of Nations League semis

PA Media/dpa London Spain boss Luis de la Fuente feels his young side have already shown the 'tremendous ambition' needed to go on and successfully defend their Nations League crown in Germany. The European champions face France in the semi-finals in Stuttgart on Thursday in a repeat of last summer's Euro 2024 last-four clash. Having topped their Nations League group with five wins, La Roja needed a penalty shoot-out to edge past the Netherlands in the quarter-finals following a thrilling 3-3 draw in the second leg in Valencia. Spain head to Germany on the back of a 23-game unbeaten run in competitive matches - last losing against Scotland in a Euro 2024 qualifier at Hampden Park during March 2023. 'I am proud. When you win so often, you get closer to losing because one day that will happen, but we see it as something completely normal,' De la Fuente told 'This is a group of very young players with tremendous ambition who don't get tired of winning. They will always bring us the joy of fighting for victory and that is always a wonderful thing. 'In the end, any result can happen, especially at this level where anything is possible - but the spirit of this team is always to compete to win, fight to win and endure whatever it takes to win, that is very important.' De la Fuente, who took over from Luis Enrique in December 2022, handed an international recall to veteran midfielder Isco after a six-year absence following his impressive campaign with Real Betis. New Real Madrid signing Dean Huijsen - having completed a switch from Bournemouth ahead of the Club World Cup - could be paired alongside fellow youngster Pau Cubarsi at centre-back. France also needed spot-kicks to come through their quarter-final against Croatia, having fought back from losing the first leg 2-0 in Split. Missing several players through injury, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps gave Lyon winger Rayan Cherki, 21, a first senior call-up. Seven members of the French squad who were involved in the Champions League final - which saw Paris aint-Germain thrash Inter Milan 5-0 - joined up with their team-mates at Clairefontaine ahead of travelling back out to Germany. Despite not being able to call upon the likes of defensive regulars William Saliba, Jules Kounde and Dayot Upamecano, France coach Deschamps wants his players to be brave against the European champions. 'Ideally speaking, I would wish all the three who are absent to be with us,' Deschamps said at a press conference. 'They have been my back-line for the past two years, but it means I can give playing time to somebody else. 'Against a rival like Spain we need to be sufficiently solid at the back - but if we are only planning to defend then there is no point in playing a football game. We need to strike the balance between defending and attacking. The primary objective is that we need a team which is capable of making life difficult for Spain.'

Arsenal in talks over Partey deal as Jorginho and Tierney depart

LondoncTypeface:> Arsenal remain in discussions with Thomas Partey over a new contract but have confirmed the expected exits of Jorginho and Kieran Tierney. Partey's contract is set to expire on June 30, and the defensive midfielder has been linked with Barcelona and Juventus. The news on Partey's future came in an update shared by the Premier League runners-up thanking the out-of-contract men's and women's players who will be leaving the club at the end of the month. Italy midfielder Jorginho, who is expected to join Brazilian outfit Flamengo, had already confirmed his exit in a farewell video posted to his Instagram last week, while Tierney is returning to former club Celtic. The Scotland left-back, who featured 144 times for Arsenal, told the club website: 'Just thank you for everything from day one. They supported us through the good times and the bad, and they supported me through some hard times as well. 'I feel so lucky that I've played for this club and the love that the supporters have given me has been amazing. I've loved every day here and I've learned so much, I've improved so much and I just feel very lucky.' (PA Media/dpa)
