Over 1,500 tons of rice handed over to Myanmar earthquake victims under APTERR programme
YANGON: Over 1,500 tons of rice donated by China and South Korea under the Asean Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) programme were handed over to Mandalay region government on Wednesday (June 11) for communities affected by the earthquake in March this year, an official from the Rice Division under the Department of Agriculture told Xinhua on Thursday (June 12).
Myanmar received a total of over 3,500 tons of rice from South Korea and China for disaster-hit communities under the APTERR programme 2024, he said.
In response to the quake disaster, out of over 3,500 tons of rice, 1,575 tons were allocated to Mandalay region, 1,610 tons to Naypyidaw, 140 tons to Sagaing region, and 270 tons to Shan state, he added.
The handover process has been completed in Mandalay and Sagaing. Once all handovers are complete, the rice will be distributed to affected areas, he said.
Since 2017, Myanmar's Department of Agriculture, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, has actively participated in the APTERR programme for rice storage and distribution, he said.
Between 2017 and 2024, Myanmar received over 12,000 tons of rice through the programme and distributed it to disaster-hit areas, he added. - Xinhua

Not so sweet move - Vietnam approves sugary drinks tax under amended consumption law
HANOI (Xinhua): Vietnam's National Assembly on Saturday passed the amended Law on Special Consumption Tax, approving for the first time an excise tax on sugary drinks, the Vietnam News Agency reported. Under the revised law, drinks containing more than 5 grams of sugar per 100 ml will be taxed at 0 per cent in 2026, 8 per cent from January 2027, and 10 per cent starting in 2028. According to the report, milk, 100 per cent fruit juice, coconut water, liquid nutritional supplements, mineral water, and nectar drinks will be exempt from the tax. The law, effective from Jan. 1, 2026, also expands taxation to air conditioners within certain capacity ranges, while maintaining current tax rates on products like alcohol, tobacco, vehicles, and entertainment services, the report added. Philippines buys 12 FA-50 light combat aircraft from S. Korea; purchase part of ambitious defence modernisation programme
MANILA (Xinhua): The Philippines' Department of National Defense (DND) Saturday confirmed the acquisition of 12 FA-50 Block 70 light combat aircraft from Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd. (KAI) of South Korea as part of the modernization program of the country's Armed Forces. The contract, worth over US$700 million, was formalised earlier this month with the issuance of a notice to proceed. According to the DND, the acquisition includes mission equipment, integrated logistics support, and a training and logistics information system. The FA-50 Block 70 represents the latest evolution of the FA-50 platform, featuring advanced avionics, modern radar systems, and extended operational range. The DND said the delivery of the aircraft will be carried out in phases over the next five years, with full completion expected by 2030. - XInhua
