Indian women hockey team's agony continues, loses 0-2 to Australia
The visitors had earlier lost 3-5 and 2-3 against Australia 'A' in the first two matches of the exposure trip.
Courtney Schonell (9th minute) opened the scoring for the hosts in the first quarter, before Grace Stewart (52nd) added a second goal in the final phase of the match to seal the contest.
Perth, May 1 (PTI) The Indian women's hockey team fought hard before going down 0-2 against Australia in the third game of its Down Under tour at the Perth Hockey Stadium here on Thursday.
This match was India's first outing against Australia's main team.
From the onset, Australia pressed hard on India's defence, winning an early penalty corner but the scoreline remained unchanged.
Australia eventually broke the deadlock in the ninth minute when Schonell found the back of the net to give her team the lead.
The hosts threatened to double their lead with another penalty corner but failed.
In the second quarter, India showed intent and earned two penalty corners in quick succession, but the equaliser eluded them.
Despite their growing impact on the game, India went into half-time trailing by a goal.
The third quarter was another goalless affair. Both teams were unable to convert their chances, including a penalty corner apiece.
In pursuit of the equaliser in the fourth quarter, India conceded the second goal when Steward slotted it into the net from open play at the 52nd minute. The Aussies did not squander that 2-0 advantage.
India will take on Australia again in the fourth match of the tour here on Saturday. PTI SSC SSC UNG

Wasteful India concede late goal to lose 2-3 against Netherlands in FIH Pro League
Amstelveen , A wasteful Indian men's hockey yet again conceded a late goal to lose 2-3 against the Olympic champions Netherlands, enduring their second consecutive defeat in the European leg of the FIH Pro League here on Monday. For India, Abishek, playing his 100th match, scored in 20th minute, while Jugraj Singh converted his team's ninth penalty corner in 54th minute. The Netherlands scored through Thijs van Dam , Tjep Hoedemakers and Jip Janssen . India had earlier lost 1-2 against the Netherlands on Saturday. India started on the front foot in the first quarter with as many as nine circle penetrations, but the goals eluded the visitors. India had the first chance of the match in the sixth minute but Abhishekk's shot went wide. Soon, Shilanand Lakra snatched the ball in the midfield and raced his way into the Dutch circle only to shoot wide. Tjep Hoedemakers got the first scoring opportunity for the Dutchmen but his reverse hit from a tight angle was off the target. Minutes later, Hoedemakers got another chance but his deflection went wide. The Indians secured the first penalty corner of the match in the 18th but the Dutch defended well to deny India skipper Harmanpreet Singh. But two minutes later, Abhishek handed India the lead with a fierce shot to the top of the Dutch goal after being set up by Lakra. India's joy, however, was shortlived as four minutes later Thijs van Dam found himself at the right place at the right time to level the scores after the ball, from Thierry Brinkman's pass, hit an Indian stick and popped up in front of the goal. The Dutch dominated the early exchanges after the change of ends and took the lead three minutes into the third quarter through Hoedemakers, who neatly deflected in Derck de Vilder's pass. Minutes later, Netherlands got their first penalty corner but the effort went wide. Thereafter it was all India as they secured as many as six penalty corners in quick succession but Harmanpreet and Jugraj Singh failed to convert any of them. The Indians were guilty of wasting chances, converting just one of the nine penalty corners they secured in the match. Towards the end of the third quarter, India got as many as five penalty corners in quick succession but Harmanpreet and Jugraj failed to breach the Dutch defence. In the 54th minute India got two more penalty corners, the second of which was converted by Jugraj to level the scores. But as has often been the case, the Indians conceded another late goal when Janssen converted the Netherlands' second penalty corner three minutes from the hooter to seal the match. India will next play Argentina here on Wednesday.

India coach Manolo exudes confidence on eve of Hong Kong clash
Kowloon (Hong Kong), Jun 9 (PTI) The recent defeat against Thailand notwithstanding, India head coach Manolo Márquez on Monday exuded confidence on the eve of their vital 2027 Asian Cup qualifier match against Hong Kong here. Placed in Pot 1 for the qualifiers, India, ranked 127th, got off to a slow start in the qualifiers with a draw against Bangladesh in March before losing 0-2 to Thailand in a friendly last week. "In my opinion, most coaches are not worried about the scores in the friendly games. We are focussing on the important match (Hong Kong)," Manolo said. "I know everyone speaks about the score (against Thailand). But if we scored from the chances we created, it would have been different. This is football." Out of the three matches they have played so far this year, they have won one, drawn one, and lost one. The Group C table is still a clean slate with all four teams level on a point apiece after both games on matchday 1 on March 25 ended goalless. India and Bangladesh drew in Shillong, while Hong Kong also got a point away to Singapore. Only the group winners will qualify for the Asian Cup in 2027. "Our preparations have been much better this time, if we compare with the previous FIFA windows, where you practically don't have too much time. "We had about three weeks to prepare, between Kolkata, Bangkok, and here in Hong Kong. And we are ready to perform. Nothing special," said Manolo. "The environment in the team is quite good as well. Obviously, in all teams across the world, the environment is better when you are winning games constantly. But the environment, the relationship between the players, regardless of the results, is very good," he added. India centre-back Konsham Chinglensana Singh echoed the coach's words. "We are well prepared for the game after three weeks in the camp. Mentally, and physically, we have prepared well, and are ready for the game," he said. India, who made it to two successive Asian Cups for the first time in 2023, are aiming to extend the streak. Hong Kong also qualified for the previous tournament, but with only one available berth, either side is bound to miss out. In what will be the inaugural football match at the newly built 50,000-capacity Kai Tak Stadium, the tickets reportedly have been sold out and a full house can be expected on Tuesday. "We will try to enjoy the situation in this stadium. I don't know if it will be completely full, but a lot of people will be there. It will be a nice event, but obviously, we are focusing on winning the game," said Manolo. Hong Kong's head coach, Ashley Westwood, is no stranger to Indian football, having coached clubs like Bengaluru FC, ATK, and Punjab FC before taking up international coaching roles, first in Afghanistan, followed by Hong Kong. "I went to India in 2013, and the country is a million miles away from where it was back then. I know their coach, I watched the ISL. He's a good coach, and he's been doing good things with FC Goa. He coaches right, he prepares right, and his players are always fit. "The spirit's good in the squad, and everybody gets on with each other. We're looking forward to it," he said. India and Hong Kong have crossed swords 24 times. The Blue Tigers have won nine of these matches, while Hong Kong have won eight. Seven matches have ended in draws.
