China serious about winning gold at LA Olympics: Former Australia captain Steve Waugh
London [UK], : Cricket legend Steve Waugh believes China could become a major force in world cricket as the sport moves towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Speaking at an exclusive event at The Taj, St. James Court, hosted by Here and Now 365 Chairperson Manish Tiwari, Waugh said: "As soon as cricket's inclusion in the Olympics was announced, China started building a team. They are serious about winning gold."
In this hearty conversation with Manish, Waugh also predicted how the T20 format is going to change the game and said, "T20 is massive now. It's billions of dollars, and it's growing every day."
"Test cricket will survive, but T20 will dominate. Players will soon be contracted mainly to franchises. Test matches might even need special permissions," said the World Cup-winning former Aussie captain.
He also shared his thoughts on how countries like Saudi Arabia and the USA are investing heavily in cricket and remarked, "It's exciting. The game is reaching new parts of the world, and the Olympics will take it even further."
While the future of cricket was the highlight of the evening, the conversation soon turned to Waugh's deep connection with India. Manish Tiwari introduced him warmly as "Steve Da," a name given to him by the children at Kolkata's Udayan, a charitable home for children of people suffering from Leprosy, that Steve helps run.
"When Manish called me Steve Da, it felt special. India is like a second home. The people, the culture, the passion it stays with you forever," Waugh said, smiling.
Waugh spoke fondly about his many trips to India, not only as a cricketer but also as a photographer and humanitarian. He described India as "the best place in the world for photography," and recalled how one of his photos from Rajasthan won a World Photography Award. "In India, you really can't take a bad photo," he said, laughing.
The evening then moved to Waugh's charity work, both in India and Australia. Speaking about the Steve Waugh Foundation, he shared a powerful story of a young boy who could not walk or talk but, after receiving therapy supported by the foundation, went on to win two Paralympic gold medals.
"It's great when you see lives being changed. You realise how much impact you can have by simply getting involved and giving people a chance," Waugh said.
Waugh also reflected on how he helped inspire other cricketers to take up charity work in India and added, "Back then, not many sportspeople were doing it. But I think seeing someone take the first step made others realise they could too."
Manish Tiwari closed the session by saying, "Steve Waugh's story is not just about cricket. It's about leadership, humility, and using your fame to make a real difference."

MyKayla Skinner's fans call Simone Biles 'bully,' extend support to Riley Gaines
Gymnast MyKayla Skinner has slammed her former teammate Simone Biles for her war of words with former swimmer Riley Gaines regarding transgender athletes' participation in women's sports. Skinner claimed that she was "belittled, dismissed, and ostracized behind the scenes" by Biles throughout her career, in a statement to One America News. Skinner has been praised by many on social media for coming out in support of Gaines. This comes after Biles publicly issued an apology over her remarks against Gaines, which the former swimmer accepted. Recently, a war of words erupted between the two stars after Gaines attacked the Minnesota's Champlin Park softball team for reportedly including a 17-year-old trans player into the side. Taking note of it, Biles called Gaines 'sick' and a 'sore loser.' The feud further escalated after the 11-time Olympic medalist told Gaines to 'bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male.' Later on, Biles apologized for her remarks, noting that 'competitive equity & inclusivity' were an essential part of sports. In reply, the former swimmer accepted the apology and called Simone Biles 'the greatest female gymnast of all time'. Skinner shared a statement with One America News, attacking Biles for her remarks. The gymnast lauded Gaines for "having the courage to speak up." She said, "Throughout my own career, I endured being belittled, dismissed, and ostracized behind the scenes by Simone. The pressure to stay silent was immense." Further, she alleged that she kept quiet on the matter out of respect for the sport and her teammates. You are a true role model for little girls with gymnastics aspirations," one person wrote on X. Another one added, "Well said Kayla." Some accounts even asserted that Biles was a "bully". Notably, Skinner and Biles were teammates during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In a statement, Skinner alleged that she was "belittled, dismissed, and ostracized behind the scenes" by Biles throughout her career. She has now retired from competitive gymnastics, but does take part in the sport as a commentator. Earlier, it was reported that Simone Biles and Suni Lee unfollowed MyKayla Skinner on social media over her controversial statement against the US Olympic gymnastics team.

Goa may checkmate Chandigarh, Jaipur to host Chess World Cup later this year
Panaji: Goa has emerged as the top choice to host the FIDE Chess World Cup later this year due to growing concerns over New Delhi, the original choice. The Oct 31-Nov 27 tournament was originally supposed to be held in New Delhi, but the organisers have started looking at other venues with Goa emerging as the best bet, ahead of Chandigarh and Jaipur. Neither FIDE, the governing body for world chess, or the All India Chess Federation (AICF), has made any statement about the final venue, though FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich recently indicated that the World Cup will be held 'in some new location'. Held once every two years, the World Cup is an eight-round knockout tournament featuring 206 players, where the 50 top-seeded players get a first-round bye and go directly to round two. All the matches consist of two classical games. A senior official, who did not want to be identified since he is not authorised to speak with the media, said there were concerns in some quarters about pollution in New Delhi during Oct and Nov when the tournament is scheduled to be played. 'It's almost certain that the tournament will be held in Goa. The official announcement will be made by FIDE,' said the official.
