DC Council expels Trayon White following federal bribery charge

Yahoo04-02-2025

The D.C. Council voted to expel councilmember Trayon White on Tuesday after he was accused last year by federal authorities of agreeing to accept $156,000 in bribes.
The legislative body's 12 other members voted unanimously to remove White from his position. Following the vote, White was seen on video ignoring questions from reporters as he walked out of the meeting room.
Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, a Democrat, said the vote today was "not easy" and represents a "very challenging situation" for the ward that White represents, but ultimately, he said, it is the right move for the city.
"Trust is precious, trust is critical for an elected government, and we must act," Council Chairman Phil Mendelson added.

The Justice Department, citing a criminal complaint charging White with bribery, alleged that "beginning in June 2024, White corruptly agreed to accept $156,000 in cash payments in exchange for using his position as a D.C. Councilmember to pressure government employees at [the] Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement and [the] D.C. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services to extend several D.C. contracts."
White, who has pleaded not guilty to those allegations, reportedly faces up to 15 years in prison if he is convicted. A jury trial in the case is set for January 2026.

"Councilmember White betrayed the trust of his staff, the council, the agencies and, above all, the residents of Ward 8," McDuffie said at a hearing last week ahead of the expulsion vote.
In December, Mendelson called White's alleged behavior "quintessential corruption."
"There is only one remedy: to remove the corruption from our body," he added at the time. "This incident has damaged the public trust necessary for government to function well."
In November, White easily won re-election to his seat.
"I am humbled. I don't know what's ahead, but I know God is good and his mercy endures forever," White told WJLA earlier this week.

Ex-council leader wrongly claimed tax discount

A former Conservative council leader has admitted claiming the single person discount for council tax despite not being eligible. Phil Broadhead, who spent three months leading Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council in 2023, said it happened when he moved house in 2022 and blamed the local authority's online forms for not being in "plain English". Broadhead, who voted on the authority's budgets at a time when he was in council tax arrears, said he repaid the underpayment as soon as it was noticed and that the council agreed it was an honest mistake. BCP Council said it had "worked hard to make our online systems clear and easy to use". Under the Local Government Act, an offence is committed if a councillor votes on any financial or budgetary matters when they are themselves in council tax arrears for two months or more. Broadhead - leader of the Conservative group at the council - has not confirmed to the BBC how long he was in arrears. In a letter, published in the Bournemouth Daily Echo, he admitted to the error but said he wondered "how many other examples there are of people getting caught out by the complications of online intricacies". "Surely we need a team whose focus is on making sure that the council's processes pass the plain English and ease test," he added. In January this year, BCP Council said it had recovered £654,000 by re-checking who was claiming single person's council tax discount and checking against other records such as the electoral roll. Details of that investigation are due to be published shortly. The deadline for a council response to a Freedom of Information request from a resident about the matter passed earlier this week. The council has yet to publish its response. In a statement to the BBC, Broadhead said: "When I was informed by the council that I'd been claiming this discount, I was shocked. "At no point had I had any correspondence by post that this was applied. When I asked to see the form to show I'd selected to receive the discount, I was told it had been lost. "I've since discovered that in the council's previous (and now scrapped) change of address form, if you didn't list those moving with you - which I must have inadvertently skipped - it automatically applied this discount without even telling you. "This is perhaps why so many others have fallen into this same trap, with the council reporting £700k collected for those mistakenly doing the same thing. "Once noticed, I rectified immediately and have repaid the full underpayment. The council agreed that it was an honest mistake and agreed no further action was needed. "I sincerely hope they've closed this quirk in the system so others don't fall into the same trap." A BCP Council spokesperson said the online form used to register for council tax at a new address included a confirmation screen showing any discounts being requested. "They are then sent an email every year, asking them to check that the details are still correct and that their circumstances have not changed, which also confirms any discounts being applied," the spokesperson said. "We have worked hard to make our online systems clear and easy to use and residents are also able to contact us if they have any questions. "As part of routine checks undertaken by BCP Council, working alongside the national fraud initiative, discrepancies between council tax payments and individual circumstances are flagged to us. "We then contact those individuals to make them aware and discuss repayment options, including applying a penalty where appropriate." You can follow BBC Dorset on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram. Hegseth Stumped by Law 101 Question About Marines in L.A.

Pete Hegseth was at a loss when a senator asked him to cite the part of the Constitution that authorized the deployment of 700 active-duty marines against anti-ICE protestors in Los Angeles. 'I'd have to pull up the specific provision,' Donald Trump's defense secretary, testifying before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee Wednesday, told Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat. 'But our Office of General Counsel, alongside our leadership, has reviewed and ensured, in the order that we set out, that it's completely constitutional for the president to use federal troops to defend federal law enforcement.' Baldwin wasn't appeased. 'Look, I'd like to know the specific constitutional, statutory authority,' she said. The senator observed that Trump had pointed to the law he invoked to send the National Guard into L.A. 'There's plenty of precedent of active-duty troops being used to support law enforcement—historical precedent,' Hegseth fired back. Baldwin said she was not trying to dispute this point and pressed Hegseth once more for a straight answer. 'It's in the order ma'am, but we'll make sure we get it to you as well,' Hegseth said. Trump sent in the marines on Monday, after previously deploying 2,000 national guardsmen over the weekend. While a state's governor typically signs off in the rare instance when troops are used against American citizens, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, did not approve the decision. The governor has accused Trump of 'manufacturing a crisis' by sending in troops and said the move was 'purposely inflammatory and will only escalate tensions.' As Trump again went over his head to deploy marines, Newsom pleaded with a court to intervene. 'They must be stopped immediately,' read a court filing. Trump's deployment of the National Guard, which cited the Title 10 authority, was already a legal gray area. It says the president can only mobilize the guard against his own citizens in times of invasion or rebellion.

Democrat Congresswoman draws boos over 'shameful' sexism remark in committee hearing with Treasury Secretary

A House Ways and Means Committee hearing took an unexpected turn Wednesday when Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) accused Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of interrupting her because of her gender—prompting audible groans from the room. The exchange occurred during a tense five-minute questioning session, where Sanchez challenged Bessent on the impact of tariffs enacted under President Trump's administration. "Prices are rising on many everyday goods," Sanchez said, citing increases in clothing, shoes, canned food, toys, and household tools. She added, "On average, Trump's tariffs are estimated to cost households $3,000 more for the same goods than they would have last year," though she did not cite the source of the figure when pressed. Trump Says 'Total Reset Negotiated' With China During Tariff Talks In Geneva When Bessent attempted to interject, Sanchez quickly cut him off: "Please don't interrupt me… I know I'm a woman, but please try to limit yourself to answering my questions." That remark prompted groans from the hearing room, with one attendee audibly reacting, "Oh, come on." Sanchez responded: "No, I'm sorry, but we get talked over all the time, and I don't want that to happen at this hearing." Read On The Fox News App Bessent, who is openly gay, did not address the accusation and instead focused on defending the administration's trade policies. When Sanchez challenged him on pricing impacts and China's trade behavior, Bessent responded, "That's incorrect," and said, "They met their agreements under President Trump in 2020, and President Biden did not enforce them." Wh Slams Dems' 'Partisan Games' After Trump-foe Schiff Calls For Insider Trading Investigation Over Tariffs Sanchez repeatedly claimed that American consumers are paying more due to tariffs and described recent negotiations with China as rushed and lacking transparency. "A poorly negotiated trade deal with China is probably not worth the paper that it is written on," she said. "I was alarmed to hear this morning that Trump said the U.S.–China deal was done after just two days of talks in London." Bessent defended the agreement as an initial step. "The deal struck was for a specific goal, and it will be a much longer process," he said, adding, "China has proven an unreliable partner." The clash between Sanchez and Bessent was repeatedly moderated by Chairman Adrian Smith (R-NE), who reminded members of time limits and decorum throughout the article source: Democrat Congresswoman draws boos over 'shameful' sexism remark in committee hearing with Treasury Secretary
