Summer heat on the way
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — We've had some cooler temperatures and cloudy skies, but if you're looking for summer heat, no worries. Meteorologist Scot Mundt has an update on the summer forecast.
Public safety alert issued for 'dangerous subject' at large
KELOLAND's been cooler than average for the past couple of days. Dating back to May 16th, Sioux Falls has had 16 of those 20 days with below average highs which includes a two week stretch from May 16-29. That two-week stretch averaged 62 degrees for a high, a little more than 10 degrees below the climate average. But I think things will soon change.
We'll watch Texas for heat to expand as we head into the second half of June. At the same time, the jet stream will retreat north and help the heat expand as we get into July. At the same time, much drier air will prevail for much of the central and northern plains.
And the European seasonal model agrees. This is what it shows for temperatures for June through August: above average.
And this is the look at rainfall, below average rain can be expected from Texas north into the central and northern plains and east toward the Great Lakes.
So I still think it's important to take any rain you can get as we continue for periods of rain into the first half of the weekend.

Rain ends, sun breaks out Saturday afternoon
We have a rainy start to Saturday as a cold front and low pressure system works through the region, but have no fear! The weekend does not look like a wash out! By afternoon our winds will begin to shift to the Northwest allowing for dry air to filter in from the west leaving us with a partly sunny finish to the day. There could be an isolated spot shower or two working southeast during the afternoon, otherwise temperatures climb to the middle and upper 70's. Around 30,000 people in Poland's south cut off from electricity after severe storms
Authorities in Poland say around 30,000 people were left with no electricity on Friday after strong winds broke trees and tore down power lines. It follows extreme weather events across the country, particularly in the southern region, where heavy rain, strong winds, and hailstorms caused damage to facades of residential and farm buildings. The fire brigade's service said their men have been working to deal with the impact since Thursday evening. Spokesman for the State Fire Service in Kielce, firefighters had more interventions than usual. "We have routinely had more than 2,000 interventions across the country, and on the territory of the Świętokrzyskie, these interventions were more than 200", said Senior Capt. Marcin Bajur. Most of the incidents reported were in Lesser Poland, Silesia and Lublin Voivodeships in Poland's southern region. Local officials across the cities said the storm flooded properties, basements and depressions in the ground, causing fallen trees to block roads and damage infrastructure. Marek Jamborski, Mayor of the Municipality of kocmyrzów-luborzyca in Lesser Poland Voivodeship, said the storm left extensive damage in the region. "We have very extensive damage. And it affects municipal buildings, and in private houses, and in roads, broken trees, and flooding. So the work to do is very, very much at the moment". In Poland, around 10% of the population lives in flood-prone areas, and scientists have warned that climate change could increase the flooding risks of residential buildings by up to sevenfold. At least nine people died from massive floods in southwest Poland last September, according to the Polish police. On Friday, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued first-degree storm warnings for most of the country, including the south of Lower Silesia, due to strong winds. It warned storms with hail may occur, with wind gusts reaching 85 km/h. The country's weather authority also issued a second-degree warning for part of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship region in the southeast due to the heat.

Neosho River flooding causes Ottawa County road closures
MIAMI, Okla. — Heavy rainfall from recent severe storms has caused the Neosho River in northeast Oklahoma to rise well above flood stage. Moderate flooding is occurring along the Neosho River in Ottawa County. The river is currently sitting at 19 feet and is expected to crest at 20 feet on Sunday (6/8). That has prompted a flood warning for Ottawa County until 9:00 a.m. Monday. However, any rain we get this weekend could cause flood waters to rise above what forecasters are predicting. Flooding around Miami has made it difficult for drivers Friday (6/6), closing Highway 125 near the fairgrounds, along with several other roads throughout Ottawa County. If you see a road covered with water, or barricades blocking a flooded road, Miami Police say it's best to just turn around. 'The fine for driving around a barricade is $560, so just be smart, be safe. We're already going to be strapped as it is with all the flooding that's going on. We have localized flooding throughout the city of Miami right now and other than South Main Street being blocked, Highway 125 being blocked, we have other areas throughout the city that are also blocked that we're dealing with. So, help us out by staying safe. Don't drive around the barricades,' said Miami Police Chief, Stephen Sigmon. Despite the flooding, the O'Reilly Auto Parts Outlaw Nationals Monster Truck Show will take place this weekend (6/6 – 6/7) at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds in Miami.
