Thousands to evacuate as Canada's Manitoba province declares wildfire emergency

Yahooa day ago

More than 17,000 people in Canada's western Manitoba province were being evacuated on Wednesday as the region experienced its worst start to a wildfire season in years.
"The Manitoba government has declared a province-wide state of emergency due to the wildfire situation," Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew told a news conference.
"This is the largest evacuation Manitoba will have seen in most people's living memory," he said.
Kinew said he asked Prime Minister Mark Carney to send in the Canadian military to help with the evacuations and firefighting.
Military aircraft, Kinew said, would be deployed "imminently" to help move people out of endangered remote northern communities to safety, along with additional firefighting resources.
The evacuations include the town of Flin Flon, where 5,000 residents were told earlier to get ready to flee on a moment's notice as a major wildfire bore down on the mining town named after a fictional character in a 1905 paperback novel.
Residents of several other remote towns and Indigenous communities have also now been told to leave.
Most of the evacuees are expected to be transported to the Manitoba capital of Winnipeg.
- 'Flames 121 feet high' -
Evacuee Sheryl Matheson told AFP the wildfires had surrounded her small town of Sherridon, northeast of Flin Flon.
"It's been overwhelming," said the owner of a fishing lodge. "It was very smokey. You could see the fires four or five kilometers away and moving fast."
"The flames were shooting over 121 feet high and firefighters couldn't get close enough to the fire to do anything."
Elsaida Alerta told public broadcaster CBC she was having "major anxiety" as she and her family readied to leave Flin Flon, where she has lived for three years.
"Especially for somebody that lived in a big city (previously), that never had to evacuate, this is definitely nerve-wracking," she said.
The only highway out of Flin Flon still open was jammed with traffic and local petrol stations had run out of gasoline, she said.
"We basically gathered all our essential things, important documents, medications and, you know, things that our animals will need," she said.
"We're just gonna make our way and hope for the best."
- 'Changing climate' -
Premier Kinew said the widespread nature of the fires was cause for alarm.
"For the first time, it's not a fire in one region, we have fires in every region. That is a sign of a changing climate that we are going to have to adapt to," Kinew said.
Twenty-two wildfires were active in the province.
Nearly 200,000 hectares of forests have been scorched in just the past month, or triple the annual average over the previous five years, Kirstin Hayward of the Manitoba wildfire service said.
"Manitoba has the highest fire activity in Canada so far this year, due in part to a prolonged period of warm and dry conditions," she said.
Climate change has increased the impact of extreme weather events in Canada.
About 1,000 residents of Lynn Lake and Marcel Colomb First Nation in Manitoba and 4,000 people from the northern village of Pelican Narrows and other communities in neighboring Saskatchewan had already been evacuated earlier in the week.
A firefighter was also severely injured when he was struck by a falling tree while battling blazes. He was being treated in hospital, Kinew said.
The Manitoba premier said emergency shelters were being set up and companies and communities across the province were being asked to "open your doors" to displaced residents.
Earlier this month, two residents of the small community of Lac du Bonnet died after being trapped in a major wildfire northeast of Winnipeg.
In 2023, the worst wildfire season in the country's history, the only recorded deaths were among firefighters.
There are currently 134 active fires across Canada, including in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Half are considered out of control.

Tropical Storm Alvin is unraveling quickly as it churns large swells towards portions of western mainland Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula, bringing an increased risk of life-threatening rip currents. The FOX Forecast Center said land impacts are expected to be minimal as it treks over much cooler water and encounters hostile winds aloft. Alvin's winds peaked at 60 mph Friday morning after forming in the Eastern Pacific south of Mexico the day prior, after becoming the first named storm of the 2025 hurricane season. Maximum sustained winds have since decreased to near 50 mph. A Georgia community is reeling after a tornado touched down in Henry County on Thursday. The twister tore through several homes and left an 18-year-old critically injured at a hospital, according to county police. The twister touched down just before 4 p.m. local time outside the city of Locust Grove, about 40 miles southeast of Atlanta. A blistering heat wave is driving temperatures into the triple digits this week across a vast region of the western U.S., serving as a stark reminder that meteorological summer is just days away. Nearly 20 million residents are under heat alerts stretching from the Desert Southwest to the Pacific Northwest. The hottest locations are expected to see temperatures between 105 and 110 degrees. A 20-foot shark sighting in a New England pond sent ripples of panic and excitement across the popular summer tourist destination on Memorial Day. Many initially believed a massive great white shark had ventured into the calm waters of the Great Salt Pond on Block Island, Rhode Island. However, marine experts have since identified the behemoth as a much less menacing, albeit still enormous, basking shark weighing thousands of pounds. Britain's hard-right Reform UK to accept crypto donations

Britain's hard-right Reform UK has become the first political party in the country to accept donations through bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, raising fresh concerns over transparency. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, whose party has risen in the polls, made the announcement at a bitcoin conference in Las Vegas on Thursday evening. "As of now, provided you are an eligible UK donor ... we are the first political party in Britain that can accept donations in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies," he said. Farage has pledged to launch a "crypto revolution" if Reform UK comes to power, including the creation of a bitcoin digital reserve at the Bank of England -- inspired by recent measures in the United States. On the party's website on Friday, it was possible to make a donation via cryptocurrency. Reform UK is the "first major political party in Europe to accept cryptocurrency donations," according to a statement from British payments firm Radom, which is managing the transactions. But, for analysts, the move has raised concerns over potential misuse and a lack of transparency in political donations. "Anyone can receive crypto donations, as cryptocurrencies are permission-less and don't require bank authorisation," Larisa Yarovaya, associate professor of finance at Southampton Business School, told AFP. "This allows even those excluded from traditional banking to access financial services." She cautioned that crypto donations raise "concerns around transparency, regulation, and potential misuse." Similar concerns have been voiced in the United States, where President Donald Trump received millions in crypto donations for his last election campaign. Now an outspoken advocate of the technology, Trump's stance has triggered questions over potential conflicts of interest. For Farage, accepting crypto donations is "a way to demonstrate his allegiance with financial technology," Charles Morris, founder of analytics firm ByteTree, told AFP. The incumbent Labour party also aims to make the UK a global leader in the crypto sector. Back in April, finance minister Rachel Reeves set out new rules to regulate crypto-related activities. In Britain's July 2024 general election, anti-immigration Reform UK won just over 14 percent of the vote and five seats in parliament. Farage made another breakthrough in local elections earlier this month. lul-ajb/jkb/lth

WORLD VAPE DAY 2025: LET'S CELEBRATE OUR PROGRESS AND KEEP WORKING TOWARDS A SMOKE FREE CANADA

OTTAWA, ON, May 30, 2025 /CNW/ - 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the first vapour products in North America. Rights4Vapers wishes to celebrate the lives saved thanks to these safer nicotine products as well as acknowledge that there is still much work to do to ensure that they remain available to adults who are looking for an alternative to deadly cigarettes. 'Vaping saves lives. I hear it from Canadians who vape every day. I am one of them,' said Maria Papaioannoy, spokesperson for Rights4Vapers, Canada's largest vaping and safer nicotine advocacy movement. 'Despite being severely regulated. Despite misinformation campaigns from public health groups. Despite a continued and profound misunderstanding of nicotine. Despite push back against tobacco harm reduction. Vapour products are still here, thanks to the vocal advocacy of users.' Vapes were invented in China in 2003 to deliver nicotine as a vapour, arriving in Europe and the US and Canada around 2005. Statistics Canada surveys between 2017 and 2022, revealed the smoking rate dropped by just over four percentage points, while the vaping rate increased by three. In just four years, approximately one million Canadians shifted their nicotine habits. Notably, daily smoking among teens has now fallen to under one percent. 'Canadians who vape know that these products have saved their lives. Every Canadian adult who smokes deserves access to safer nicotine choices. This could be a vape, a pouch, gum or patch,' said Ms. Papaioannoy. 'Nicotine is not the villain. Combustion is. We need drastic reforms in how safer nicotine products are regulated.' Rights4Vapers is calling on the federal government to develop a Safer Nicotine Act where all safer nicotine products are regulated fairly and equally, focusing on who needs them—not on who produces them. It's not the government's role to dictate how Canadians should quit smoking; it's the government's responsibility to ensure that all products are safe, regulated, and kept out of the hands of minors. Safer nicotine products including vapour products and nicotine pouches are the best hope for millions of Canadians who smoke and are looking for an alternative to cigarettes. In 2021, Public Health England released its latest review of vapour studies. It found that 'the best thing that a smoker can do is to stop smoking completely and the evidence shows that vaping is one of the most effective quit aids available, helping around 50,000 smokers quit a year.'
