Tan Chong bets on innovative EVs to navigate shifting market

PETALING JAYA: Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd (TCMH) is poised to navigate the evolving global market with a forward-looking strategy rooted in innovation, sustainability, and regional expansion.
As the automotive industry undergoes a transformative shift, with a focus on electric vehicles (EVs), the group's 2024 annual report highlights the rising prominence of EVs in Malaysia and globally – a trend it is keen to capitalise on.
Moving forward, TCMH aims to bolster its EV portfolio by introducing innovative models tailored to both passenger and commercial segments, in alignment with Malaysia's push for electrification.
The group also plans to deepen its partnerships with global brands like Nissan and Renault to develop and distribute EV technologies.
Therefore, its assembly plants in Malaysia and Vietnam will play a pivotal role in manufacturing EVs that meet stringent quality and environmental standards.
By leveraging its Serendah and Da Nang facilities, TCMH intends to scale up production to meet growing demand in South-East Asia, particularly in markets like Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
TCMH is also exploring mobility-as-a-service solutions, such as car subscription models, to cater to changing consumer preferences. This initiative, already part of its business portfolio, is expected to expand, offering flexible and sustainable transport options to urban consumers across its operational regions.
With a presence in Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Taiwan, TCMH pointed out that its strategic roadmap includes further expansion into Indo-China and other emerging markets.
This is evidenced by the group's establishment of a regional operating headquarters in Thailand and assembly plants in Vietnam and Myanmar.
In the more immediate term, TCMH plans to strengthen its sales and distribution networks in these markets, focusing on both completely built-up (CBU) and locally assembled vehicles.
The group said its appointment as the sole distributor for Nissan vehicles in Myanmar, along with its investments in after-sales service centres such as the E-Garage in Cambodia, will be scaled up to enhance customer experience and brand loyalty.
TCMH's robust strategies could prove valuable going forward, as the group experienced a challenging 2024 – reporting a 17.8% decline in revenue to RM2.08bil and a net loss after tax of RM214.2mil.
Reiterating its robust financial foundation, it reported total equity of RM2.52bil and cash reserves of RM545.5mil, while highlighting its commitment to delivering value, as shown by the interim dividend of one sen per share paid in June 2024.
TCMH's focus on assessing financial performance in the new fiscal year suggests a cautiously optimistic approach to rewarding investors. It added that the proposed renewal of authority for share buy-backs and recurrent related-party transactions, as outlined in the 2024 AGM notice, reflects its strategy to enhance shareholder value while maintaining operational flexibility.
'Improving operational efficiency remains a top priority for the group. We streamline processes at all our plants to lower production costs, while maintaining high quality standards.
'As we continue to optimise our supply chain to ensure timely deliveries and cost-effectiveness, we utilise digital tools to enhance inventory management and dealership operations to increase overall efficiency,' said TCMH president Datuk Tan Heng Chew in the report.

LONDON: British car exports to the United States slumped by over half in May in large part due to President Donald Trump's tariffs, data showed Friday, but are set to recover thanks to a US-UK trade deal. Britain's automotive trade body SMMT said that exports of new vehicles fell more than 55 percent last month compared with May 2024. Trump's tariffs on the auto sector, imposed in April, 'depressed demand instantly, forcing many manufacturers to stop shipments', it said. 'However, with the trade agreement... due to come into effect before the end of June, this should hopefully be a short-lived constraint.' The agreement between London and Washington will slash the tariff on UK car exports to 10 percent from 27.5 percent, on a limit of 100,000 vehicles annually. Almost 80 percent of cars made in the UK last year were exported, mostly to the European Union. The UK auto sector is dominated by foreign-owned brands, including Japanese giant Nissan and India-owned Jaguar Land Rover. The United States meanwhile is a key market for UK-produced luxury models such as Bentley and Rolls-Royce, which are both under German ownership.

Japan's auto exports to US drop after tariffs

TOKYO: Japanese auto exports to the United States fell almost a quarter in May, data showed Wednesday, as worries over Donald Trump's tariffs continue to grow with no deal yet made between Tokyo and Washington. Roughly eight per cent of jobs are tied to the auto industry in Japan, which is home to the world's top-selling carmaker Toyota as well as Honda, Nissan and other giants. The country is seeking relief from the 25 per cent US vehicle tariffs and other trade levies, but no deal has been reached despite several rounds of talks with Trump and his administration. Japan posted a trade deficit for the second straight month in May, with imports exceeding the value of exports by 637.6 billion yen (US$4.4 billion). To the United States specifically, exports fell around 11 percent, with the export of automobiles down 24.7 per cent on-year, finance ministry data showed. "A series of tariffs imposed by the United States, which represents roughly one-fourth of world GDP and roughly 20 per cent of Japan's exports, is hitting many Japanese companies' profits," Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told reporters in Canada after the G7 summit. The situation "could have a grave impact on both Japan and the United States as well as the world economy, directly and indirectly", he warned. Ishiba held face-to-face talks with Trump on Monday but no breakthrough on the trade impasse was announced. "As there are still some points where both sides disagree, we have not reached an agreement on the package as a whole," he said. "I had frank discussions with President Trump, and we agreed to instruct the relevant cabinet members to advance further discussions." Japan's trade surplus with the United States shrank 4.7 per cent on-year in May – the first contraction in the past five months, even as imports from the country dropped 13.5 percent. Japan, a key US ally and its biggest investor, is subject to the same 10 per cent baseline tariffs imposed on most nations plus steeper levies on cars, steel and aluminium. Trump also announced an additional 24 per cent "reciprocal" tariff on Japan in early April but later paused it along with similar measures on other countries.

(EPA Images pic) LONDON : Luca de Meo's abrupt departure as Renault CEO has kicked off a search for his successor, with analysts mentioning longtime insider Denis Le Vot and Maxime Picat of rival Stellantis as suitable fits to continue the French automaker's turnaround. Renault shares fell as much as 8% yesterday, their biggest one-day percentage drop since February 2022, as investors worried about the company's future without de Meo at the helm. Shares in Kering, where he will become CEO, rallied. Picat, who is head of global purchasing and supply chains at Stellantis, had been in the running for the CEO post at the world's No 4 automaker. One of two internal candidates, he lost out to Antonio Filosa. Executive vice president Le Vot joined Renault from university and has run its low-cost Dacia brand since May 2022. Analysts at French brokerage Kepler Cheuvreux said both men could be potential successors, whilst JP Morgan analyst Jose Asumendi noted Renault's 'strong bench' of brand managers, including at Dacia. 'We (…) also would envision potential external candidates from (other companies) such as Stellantis, VW Group, Nissan, amongst other competitors,' he said. Le Vot and Picat, who are both French nationals, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Renault declined to comment on its succession plans. Whoever succeeds de Meo will have to hit the ground running. Although he revived Renault and overhauled its strategic alliance with Nissan during his five years as CEO, like other traditional automakers it faces rising competition from Chinese rivals. The company must also lean on partnerships because it is smaller than most other mainstream manufacturers. 'De Meo's departure will add to concerns about Renault's ability to remain independent,' said Jefferies analysts, a perennial challenge in an industry built on scale. Renault was the world's No 15 automaker by sales in 2024, according to data compiled by industry analyst Felipe Munoz, down from 14th spot in 2023. In recent years, it has been overtaken by Chinese automakers BYD, Geely, Chery and Changan is likely to surpass it in sales this year. To make up for its small size as the auto industry wrestles with the huge expense of going electric, Renault under de Meo teamed up with a number of partners and investors including Google, Qualcomm and China's Geely. The partnerships have helped reduce costs, but labour unions claim they threaten the company's in-house know-how. Insider vs outsider Under Le Vot's leadership, the Dacia brand has performed well thanks to its Sandero and Duster models. In April, the subcompact Sandero was Europe's No 2 selling car – behind the Renault Clio – and the Duster SUV was No. 7, according to research firm JATO Dynamics. Le Vot had previous management stints in Turkey and Russia, where he was COO from 2011 to 2013, and ran North American operations at alliance partner Nissan, where he oversaw the launch of the new Altima sedan in 2018. Picat has spent his entire career at PSA and then Stellantis, formed when the French group merged with FCA in 2021. He was head of the Peugeot brand from 2012, where he oversaw the launch of two of its bestsellers, the 2008 and 3008 SUVs. A Stellantis source who knows Picat said he didn't know if he was interested in the top job at Renault, but that he would 'not be surprised' if he was talking to the French automaker. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to discuss the matter publicly, said it would be normal for an executive to look elsewhere after losing the race to become CEO.
